We're going to be spending Sun-Thurs in San Antonio next week. We have Sea World and Schlitterbahn tickets already, but wondering what else we should do/see while we're there. It will be Me, my wife and two daughters (ages 6 & 7). Obviously we'll see the Alamo & Riverwalk, but not sure what else. Wonderworld? Natural Bridge Caverns? Aquarena Springs? Thanks.
Fiesta Texas. Institute of Texan Cultures. Go to the Zoo and spend the day there and ride the small train through the park. See what exhibits are at the Witte Museum. Kiddie Park (next to Witte Museum). Hit up Chris Madrids Hamburgers. Go to the Friendly Spot Bar (its a family friendly/outdoor bar in King Williams district). Walk around Pearl Brewery Development area and let the kids play in the riverwalk area there. In New Braunfels... have a meal at Gruene Hall or Mozzies
Aquarena Springs has apparently closed down and is a research center for Texas State but you can still take the glass bottom boat tours I think. If you're looking to see the Alamo then you may extend that into doing the mission trail and see some of the oft overlooked missions in the area. Fiesta Texas is fun and you can check out the new Iron Rattler. Do some tubing on the Comal or Guadalupe.
Go to the Tower of the Americas in Hemisfair Park. It offers a nice view at sunset and there's a revolving restaurant. Mrs. SwoLy and I saw that back in the early 2000's and it is still a nice place to walk around today.
The Texas Safari Park that is next to the Natural Bridge Caverns is pretty awesome and the kids will LOVE it. Watch out for pesky llamas and ostriches. They tried to attack my wife and get into the car LOL I hope that you and the fam enjoy the trip!
thanks Dawg. I've done the mission trail with my wife and we enjoyed it.. but I thought the kids might get bored. I used to LOVE floating the Guadalupe, but I think the typical drunkin' floaters would be too much with the kids. Its a shame about Aquarena Springs, but probably better for the environment now. The glass bottom boat might be good for my kids.
Thanks JJ - I've never heard of Kiddie Park - skews about 2yrs too young for my kids, but it looks like a pretty cool place. I'll check out the Friendly Spot Bar, and we may end up in Gruene the day we go to Schlitterbahn.
One July 4th, we went up and sat at the bar in the restaurant and watched about 4 different fireworks shows for the cost of a few drinks. (obligatory Swoly grin)
Sounds like a great vacation. We just did our San Antonio stuff last week. Good that you're doing it on weekdays. Schlitterbahn is great - the lines aren't too long for the rides in the older section with the Comal river water, and there's a great new tube loop in the new section that you can float in as long as you want. If you do want to ride the more popular water coaster type rides, do it when the park first opens or you'll spend a big portion of your day in line. I would suggest Fiesta Texas - typical amusement park with rides etc. A lot of fun rides on the Boardwalk section that might not be too much for young girls. (My family said the Iron Rattler was great. I chickened out because of that vertical drop. ) Fireworks show every night. Tubing on the Guadalupe or Comal is always good. Probably won't be a drunkfest on a weekday. I know we used to go to the tube chute on the Comal at Prince Solms Park in New Braunfels - depending on where you go, you can either start a trip down the river that way, or get a ticket to the park instead and go down the chute over and over again. At least that is how they did it a while back. The Riverwalk can be a fun hangout. There are a couple of water fountains you can play in near the Hemisfair Tower in the park there. Never been up the tower - I hear too many scary stories about the elevator getting stuck. The Pearl Brewery was nice and upscale but small - if there was a separate riverwalk over there, we couldn't find it. Didn't know about Kiddie Park. I'll make sure to take my son next year.
I went to San Antonio once just to watch all the fat women walking around. It was like going to the zoo. Great vacation, you don't see that everywhere.
If you go to Fiesta Texas, ride the Iron Rattler before the lines get too long. Another favorite is the Superman Ride, where your feet are dangling throughout the ride.
I was just in SA last week, and a couple things we did that were fun were Sea World, the wax museum and Ripley's Believe it or Not. You can get tickets for Ripleys, the wax museum and their 4-D theater on a big discount on their website. It was $27 per adult for all 3.
Lame... I was waiting for someone to come in with this type of comment. Congratulations.... I'm sure where ever you live there are nothing but dimes walking around.
Wrigley's believe it or not wax museum across the street from the Alamo (to be honest I have no clue if it's still open)
My family and I went there last year. We visited the Alamo, the Alamo Plaza, the River walk, and the Natural Bridge Caverns. Since you're going to the Alamo, try walking around the Alamo Plaza --- since its family friendly. You can find a lot of interesting things in that area from some rides to museums. Since you're going to the river walk, try riding the boat as well. I wouldn't suggest to visit the Natural Bridge Caverns since you have some little ones. But if they are adventurous, go for it. Have a good one!
Miami is full of smug, pretentious wanna-be's. Better destinations in the US: NYC, SF, Chicago, Boston, D.C.
