Um Hakeem played PF at times. Also, Hakeem and Dwight are totally different players. Hakeem didn't have to be deep in the post to be effective on offense. He actually played offense like a perfect combination of a center and a PF. It helped him be as deadly as he was. Dwight has to be deep in the post to be effective with the ball. Hakeem could get the ball anywhere and still do something with it.
People don't know that the real reason we're trying to ship Lin is...Dwight. He'd overpower every PG in the league and post them up, swat their shots, etc. Matchup nightmare. That's why I also think we're going to keep Asik as he will be our only true Center.
Grey Smith's D is not good, but his offense look like Howard. He has his best game when he played the center and Asik sat on the bench. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/UqMwFLsoQ9A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> So, Howard should be the C and Asik play PF. I really want Asik develop his jumper and hook shot. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/sGBv4VNYuo8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> 29:46 <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/B6IqR5Ul-og" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
When people say "he's x.xxft without shoes", do they think the guy has to play without wearing shoes and only his opponents are allowed to wear a pair? Because if you point that size out you'd have to list every player in the league smaller and the gap would still be the same as it is now. Nothing changes, no matter what method you use.
lmao this thread is hilarious but op kinda has the right idea. if we keep asik, HE CANT PLAY 10-15MPG!!!!! you cannot play someone that good for a small chucnk of the game. im definitely for both of them on the floor for part of the game. both of them can defend pfs. i just dunno how its gonna work cuz on paper its obviously a bad idea. i dunno how the asik thing is gonna turn out. but its an awesome problem to have
Howard and Asik are both centers. Neither guy is a PF. Dwight is not an undersized center. Get off the internet and watch the games.
Asik would be the best backup C in the league. I think the Rockets should try this: 1) Howard starts at C with Asik off the bench in a super defensive 6 man role 2) Play Twin Towers for 10 minutes a game (2.5 minutes per quarter, or 4.5 possessions per quarter) 3) Split the remaining C minutes so Asik still gets around 28 minutes per game, Dwight at 30-32 4) Hope Asik develops more of an outside jump shot to keep defenses honest 5) Test this out until the trade deadine where more teams could become desperate for a quality C (probably THE hardest position to fill--a double-double center) 6) Evaluate the setup, if it works, keep him, if it doesn't, trade him 7) Championship! Either way, its worth a shot. I could see, in Twin Towers mode, Dwight and Asik contribute to 50% + defensive stops which will lead to fast breaks and a quick score on the other end. --in which case, an offensive twin tower set is not necessary to execute. One also has to consider the percentages and weigh the tradeoffs of a defensive vs. offensive impact the twin towers will have on a game. IF they clog the lane defensively, and force lots of bad shots or low % shots from the opposing team, then its very probable the 2 best rebounders in the league will get the rebound and can readily execute an outlet pass or the rockets wing players can immediately begin running in Mchale's offense thereby creating the mismatch--without needing either Dwight or Asik to settle in the post. Defense creates offense so the 'negative' impact of a twin towers on offense will be further negated (At least somewhat) due to the up tempo style of play and run & gun style of offense the Rockets deploy. So if Dwight and Asik DO share 10 minutes a game on the floor, it won't be strictly a 50-50 tradeoff as in they give up on the offensive side what was gained defensively, but rather it will be further dictated by the pace of the game and their unique defensive & rebounding skills. Thats why I think this could work in bites. I think we try it out, play the odds, and see what happens.
Those who bring up SPACING as an issue, don't play basketball. There's a lot of space between the corners at the low block. If either one (D12 or Asik) takes each side, there is enough room for each to make a move in the low post. If one (D12 or Asik) is doubled by the other's defender, then the other big will be left open very near the basket. Easy two. A Howard - Asik frontcourt will just be some version of Ibaka - Perkins but much much more formidable.
Power Forwards are today's Centers, due to the NBA and the media watering down the Center position. That being said, no Howard doesn't have what it takes to play PF at least the way McHale and his crew play the position now.
The spacing isn't an issue because of Dwight and Asik getting in each other's way, it's an issue because of Dwight and Asik getting in Harden's/Lin's/Parsons' way. You can't clog the inside THAT much when your team thrives on penetration to the basket and kicking out to the three point line.
You just showed us all that you have absolutely no understanding of the term "spacing" and how it influences the offense and all players involved.
And you claim that you have an understanding of spacing? You speak as if "spacing" and playing 2 non-shooting big men are mutually exclusive. The principle here folks is to use your strengths. People talk about spacing like it's all that matters. Maybe you have not heard of the drive and dish (finding either big man open very close to the basket) or the pick and roll. You talk with absolute certainty that playing D12 and Asik will clog the lane and ABSOLUTELY eliminate all opportunities for Lin-Harden-Parson to penetrate or attack the basket. Come on, really? And even that mister is jumping to a conclusion before seeing any "samples". I suggest you see it at work first before talking like you know it all. And please stop talking like your idea of "spacing" is the only way to play basketball.
