http://blog.chron.com/sportsmedia/2...ing-drive-sports-reid-ryan-talks-csn-houston/ His show almost has the same rating as the 2nd and 3rd rated show combined. For comparison Matt and Adam and lance and charlie are both 3rd. Whatever he is doing is working. You can't say its just the Texans because the 610 morning show is 2nd. He isn't even from Houston, I don't expect him to like the Houston teams. Most of Houston sports talk sucks. Its all Texans all the time. I think people are tired of it. That is why mike and mike is no1.
Skip Bayless is doing something right too, but he also makes himself look like a complete idiot in the process.
Yes, he's catering to the IQ challenged audience of Houston. Which has quite a few members. Popular doesn't mean quality. In fact in many cases it means the exact opposite.
Like Harrisment said, popularity doesn't mean quality, which explains how shows like Jersey Show can become popular. Also, most fans don't know there's a radio station outside of 610. My dad has no clue. My casual sports fan friends have no clue. 610 has been around forever, that's why people tune in - they don't know any better. BTW, Charlie P isn't from Houston either. Ultimately none of these guys are "celebrities" like they often seem to think. They're just regular guys talking sports. In Josh Innes' case, I genuinely do know more about sports than him. He's arguments are rarely supported by anything substantial. He offers no value. Just entertainment for the easily amused.
I don't get all the love for charlie p either. Great he can use 'cacophony' in a sentence. woohoo. Iso charlie never did it for me, but now that he's with lance, he is some what tolerable. With him being on vacation, I find lance is playing loose and can be himself. There i said it ...charlie is holding back lance. lance basically has to call other shows to do his voices. it must be driving his different personalities crazy! talk about derailing a thread.
The reason I like Cahrlie P is because he doesn't bull****. He uses facts to backup an argument and knows all of his sports. Doesn't pretend to know who players are like that guy Nick Wright. Charlie knows his **** and schools callers who don't. He may not be funny but he's always prepared to deal with idiocy.
I think Charlie is great. He has a no bs assessment and is very knowledgable in pretty much all sports. Also if he doesn't know something he won't pretend to.
1) You'll notice it's only the 2nd time in a long time that they're not #1 2) The writer of the article himself says that KILT's ratings are boosted substantially during the football season. It's reasonable to think that such a boost wanes during the offseason, but typically not enough to drop KILT behind its rivals. The gap narrows, but rarely closes. It makes a lot of sense when you consider that KILT was founded over 10 years before any of its competitors, and has been the broadcast home for virtually all Houston sports teams up until last year.
Saying that what Josh Innes is doing is working is like praising Hitler's ability to bring people together. It's for all the wrong reasons. As for Charilie P, yeah, he can be bland at times and I can understand why people may not be able to listen to him but his knowledge is incredible. I also think a lot of his entertaining qualities are so dry and subtle that people miss it. He is pretty funny.
this. anytime callers make blanket statements like the Texans are so conservative Charlie immediate goes to the play by play and often it contradicts the caller. the caller will then change the subject. i always found that funny.
I say this in every sports talk radio thread, but there is a significant listener base in Houston that thinks 610 is the only sports talk station in town. They are the reason 610 always wins the ratings, not because of superior programming (obviously.....). The other stations need to be more aggressive in marketing. It's not the job of the listener to find your station, it's the job of the station to find listeners.
The problem with Lance is he is perfectly happy to talking nothing but real world, college and pro football and he gets too easily bogged down in nonsense. The problem with Charlie is he doesn't know how to have fun on the air. I think they work really well together to be honest, except when Charlie is answering a caller and going over statistics and the like and Lance, obviously not paying attention, jumps in at the end and repeats something Charlie said like it was his own idea. Caller: Um yeah...how are you guys today? Charlie: Good, thanks Caller: Yeah...um...I was just wondering...do you think Dwight and Harden are going to work well together? I'll hang up and listen. Charlie: Well they should obviously. Harden and Dwight are both elite PnR players on their respective end of the PnR. You never know until you see it, but if Dwight is OK running the PnR this year I can't imagine them not being successful. Harden is a ball dominant guy to be sure, but he's also a willing passer. With a guy like Dwight who is an elite finisher they could potentially be deadly. Lance: (ruffling sound as he comes back to paying attention to the show) You know Charlie, Dwight is a really good PnR player and so is Harden. If they run PnR it might be deadly. Charlie: Yes.
Lul, dead accurate. I always got annoyed with Charlie for going over the roster and stats of some minor league baseball team from 1973, I always got annoyed with Lance for talking about TV shows and whatnot. But together, yes, perfection.
