Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.

There is no "right" way. Tanking and hitching your wagon to multiple 20 year olds who have just been handed more money than 99.9% of the population will ever see doesn't seem like a great path to success to me.

Durrant's tallent is just as much about how he has gotten all the guys in OKC to buy in and work as it is about 35 point scoring nights. The 20 year old leader tallent is far more rare than the basketball tallent IMO.

One thing I do know, free agents don't come to teams that have been tanking.

Definitely were lucky to be in prime position to pounce on Dwight and that things quickly soured for him in LA.

If Kobe wouldn't have been a major douche (as always) then we would be going into next year with Josh Smith or some other 2nd tier player.

Clearly not every team in the league is going to try it -- there will always be teams with poor management that don't think very long term, like the current Suns, Bucks, and Bobcats, for example.

But of those teams that are dead-set on acquiring superstars to get to a championship, I think you'll see at least a few more of them at least try to stay competitive while rebuilding. Though it's hard to turn guys like Rafer into Lowry and consistently hit on 2nd round picks like Morey has.

I don't understand how this isn't stockpiling assets. Is it because Jrue is a young guy?

He obviously didn't say he'd prefer to tank. He definitely did say that rebuilding is probably the easiest way to go about it but that Les wanted to remain competitive.

I'm just glad Les had the forethought and brilliance to not allow tanking (aka: The Bobcats model) take over this franchise.

I've always liked this quote. However, sometimes luck is just luck. Biggest example for the us is just a few years ago when we thought our opportunity was Pau Gasol. Luckily, it didn't work out. We would otherwise be a very different team right now with Gasol as our "star."

    What a stupid article.

Morey had Tmac and many other assests in 2009...which he used in trades.

Hinkie does not inherit those type of assets...so thus he is rebuilding with high lotto picks.

It was more about persistence by Morey and the owner than luck itself. Morey already failed several years before ...bosh, Mello, d12 1.0...so that wasn't luck.

The lucky part is whether we win anything with this team and stay healthy. Since good teams on paper only don't amount to anything lucky.

Morey reminds me a little bit of this guy —

Teen trades old cell phone on Craigslist, gets Porsche
In a series of trades on Craigslist's barter pages, a teen manages to trade up from an old cell phone to a Porsche.

Yes, a lot of it has been luck with Harden and Howard, and the Gasol thing falling through. But I think it is also because Morey is always prepared for the worst case scenario. He doesn't hang on to failed experiments and he doesn't throw good money after bad.

And you fail to realize that Morey prepared for his luck so that when the opportunity came up, whenever that turned out to be, he was ready to take advantage of it.

    Thanks for noticing.

This quote is so true in Daryl Morey's case. He is constantly preparing for these types of scenarios.

That perfect storm was years in the making....he had to wait out the dry periods, the swings and misses on FA's, etc....and once it was time....pounce when he had the chance to do it. His plan worked out perfectly, but patience was the key to making it happen and props goes to Les for being patient because that isht paid off BIG TIME!

Morey's talent eval and metrics usage is key to his ability to pick value when there's perceived to be none.

He's the best at that and that along with ability to adjust and adapt will always be his advantage over other GM's.

He's like that business that other businesses hate because he ALWAYS seems to have that *item* that people want/need, but have a hard time getting themselves, so they have to go through him to get it......but it's gonna cost ya.

Les would be wise to basically just give this guy a lifetime contract.

Wouldn't be surprised if in the next 10 to 15 years, most teams have Morey disciples running the show.

I hope Daryl pulls out one more big move. Now that we have Howard, we need one good PF that will be great for us. Omer is our biggest asset right now, but we need the season to start to see which teams will want to blow it up once they realize the current plan is not working. I hope T-Jones or D-mo show enough promise that they would be valuable enough to trade along with Asik. My hope is that Al Horford becomes available as the season progresses. I am sure Atlanta is not looking to trade him now, but his contract is great value and he would fit right into our system.

Clutchfans are so deterministic. Morey wasn't so lucky as he was prepared for the inevitable. He got shot down by Gasol, Bosh, Stoudemire, Howard at first, Plenty of misses in the draft. However stayed prepared and ready for the next swing.

I didn't take anything away from him but that doesn't mean it didn't take the stars aligning for it to work out THIS well.

Honestly... I believe it has everything to so with management. Les didn't want to have to watch a completely crap team. End of dilemma.
