Hopefully, Spider takes it a lot more seriously in the rematch. Is his match automatically a rematch, though? Or will Silva have to fight some lower tier guys before Weidman again?
I watch every single UFC event and fighters get knocked out by grazing punches that look like they barely land all the time. His eyes were rolled back in that pic I posted.
Lol why don't you have a fellow fighter "graze" your chin with a punch and we'll see how long it takes before you go "nite nite".
I don't feel mad at him clowing around...mentally that's like a haymaker. If he continues to do that it has to get to the best of guys. Makes you think the guy is invincible and then he goes for the kill. It sucks he had to lose that way but it is what it is. He took a risk doing that and I'm sure he knew. I think he felt a few of Chris punches and didn't feel the power in them and thought he could get away with it. Obviously not. Obviously his opponent wasn't someone to play with. But it is what it is. To criticize it now? I mean the guy is the greatest MMA fighter to ever do it, it's like criticizing Jordan for ballhoggin. Sure it's not preferable to teach players to get greedy, but other players aint him so they can't get away with it like he can.
I'd say more like Anderson tried to be cute and look cool with his hands on his hips, and he simply got caught. Now, if he took the fight seriously and came out looking to end Weidman, I do think he easily would have.
I agree. It isn't like he's ever lost when he clowns around in the ring. The perception is terrible though, as heard through the MMA commentators. When Silva lost = "Clowning around has NO place in the octagon. You have to respect your opponent!" If Silva won, I'm sure Rogan wouldn't mention the clowning around thing at all.
Exactly, if he had won this would have been added to all his highlight videos, gifs, glory, etc etc. It's part of who he is. And during the fight Rogan was all "This man is special, just look at this!" while he was messing around! People say what they want to say but in the end it's 10x more entertaining than GSPs manrape matches, and it's hard to argue with the results. I do think it is effective too, after awhile fighters just realize they aren't on their level, get frustrated, or whatever it is. Anderson usually shows tons of respect after the fact. I think it would be similar to a basketball player talking trash. It can get in someone's head but after the game the guys are still respectful about it.
maybe your right, or maybe his reflexes arent the same because of age, Anderson of 2007 doesnt get hit by that punch
Isn't that the risk? If it succeeds no one mentions it. If it fails it will always be mentioned. It's like Tony Romo with Jessica Simpson. If you win, no one will care about whatever effect the celebrity on the arm might be having on the player. if you lose then one has to expect that to be mentioned.
I don't think his reflexes have really regressed to the point where it's obvious he's not close to prime Silva. Weidman took a chance by offering up that left hook after his first attempt (or was it two?) missed, imo. If the match-ending punch missed Silva, Silva would have countered with a strike for sure. Regardless, I'm sure Silva will get a rematch. There's too much money lost if a rematch isn't granted. MMA folks ain't dum-dums.
Silva and his shenanigans have shown up before, as alluded to by Rogan in the match. And Silva's never lost up until tonight. But I guess, since that's the only reason Silva lost, it'll be mentioned by everyone tomorrow. Huge asterisk on this win by Weidman though. A win is a win, yep. Weidman is undefeated, yep. But it's under strange circumstances.
Posted the KO vid here if you want to see: http://www.leaguefreak.com/Forums/topic/ufc-162-chris-weidman-knocks-out-anderson-silva-video/ The last thing the ref says is "protect yourself at all times". Even the great ones need to listen to the ref. It will be interesting to see if there is a rematch or if this now sets up some of the super fights that have been on the cards for a while. GSP vs Silva or Silva vs Jones.
Dana is pretty much saying what I just said. He's been doing this for a while now, he's the greatest fighter ever, hard to criticize his strategy...and it is a strategy I don't think he does that just to play around. I think everything he has done at this stage in his career is to help give him that invincible aura. Chris didn't fall for it. I'd love to see a rematch, I think Silva still has it...but his chin may be doubted now especially at his age. Dude is old.
I'm pretty sure I heard Sylva say in the pre-fight interviews that he fights and practices with his hands down to bait his opponents and counter. That being said; he usually does this when he is against the cage. I have never seen him lean back that far back in the middle of the ring to try to avoid punches with his hands down. It's simple people, Sylva made a mistake and paid the price for it. I fell sorry for whoever has to fight him on his comeback fight.
I don't think Silva to keep throwing after the 3 punches. If you watch the Griffin, Okami, Bonnar fights he does the same exact thing but the fighters natural instinct is to stop after 3 dodges and "reset" because they're afraid of getting countered. Weidman said he trained for it and that he just kept punching and the 5th punch got him Silva the furthest back he could he get, which is how he got clipped.
