Is that the new Boeing plane that's been plagued with issues?

no -- you're thinking of the 787's battery problems, which have been resolved.

    This is an ultra-reliable 777

    prayers for those affected

Just saw the breaking news about it on NBC and they are reporting that this is not a mass casualty situation so it sounds like a lot of the passengers may have survived.

Wow, and the weather here is perfect -- barely any wind. I'm just a few miles from the airport.

Doesn't look like the tail fell off. Looks like the plane came in too low and that the pilot was trying to pitch up to avoid the water and bottomed the tail out at the threshold of the runway.

so it was pilot error? I know they can't use autopilot to land, and the weather looked quite nice.

They expert they have on CNN seemed to think so. You can see parts of the tail immediately after the water. The plane isn't supposed to touchdown in that area, but rather, farther down the runway. The expert seemed to think the pilot came in too low and that he probably pitched up at the last moment to abort the takeoff but it was too late.

They use autopilot and ILS (instrument landing system) on approach (look up "glide slope) and I believe they will do a manual landing once they are under 300 feet or so (I may not be correct on the exact height).

Crap, this is more serious than it originally seemed. I live in the area, local news is reporting 290 on board, 61 injured, 2 fatalities, and at least 40 in critical condition... prayers to all involved...

Local news reporting 60 people 'unaccounted for'... they are not sure what this means exactly, but said it's strange in this situation...
