And in an interesting turn of events, the Rockets have decided to waive Greg Smith to free up cap-space and finalize the deal for Dwight Howard

Did Dwight already meet with the Mavs today? How does that guy who tweeted Dwight will ink with Dallas even know?

    Very true, and true.

Jack Nicholson is no longer washed up. When was the last time he was in a movie? I feel like he goes to Lakers games because he is old, bored, and no longer relevant.

I too feel too many people either put words in cyber's mouth or read wayyyy too much into his generally innocuous comments. Dwight thinks "LAL made a great gesture"? OMG WHY DID HE LIE TO HOUSTON ALL THIS TIME?! He was using us to gain leverage w/ LAL? So that means Phil Jackson is coming back to coach?! SKY IS FALLING!!!

^like wth lol. Hope some of you guys aren't like this in your relationships :p

Doesn't matter, he is opting out the 5th year either way.

Wasn't it the same pick though? We traded it and bought it right back, IIRC.

If he stays in LA and breaks down physically, there is no way he's opting out of $26M (approx).

In regards to state income tax, I get that it won't help much if he claims residence in FL and stays in LA with his NBA salary.

But maybe the tax experts here can chime in: would he avoid taxes on his endorsement money?

Also I read awhile ago that you literally have to be in a state the majority of the year to claim residence there. Maybe I mis-remembered that fact. Sure, the IRS can't confirm it readily, but I wouldn't want to take the chance. BTW a lot of wealthy athletes/celebs/etc live in Windermere (I think that's DH's current Orlando 'hood) so it's not torture.

It does because of the whole what if he gets injured idea or never return as the same player. Four years is a lot of time to gauge how much he's worth. I see where you're coming from though. When he hears about that fifth year I'm sure he hates it and it pushes him further away from LA.

Also, if everything plays out the way it should (no injuries, and Dwight plays like Dwight) he is losing a lot more than $9 million by re-signing in LA and not taking the 5th year.

    Gut with Howard?

Gut is Dwight still doesn't know what he's going to do so what we say is speculative. We know he has trouble making decisions. What do I think he'll do? I think he will leave and will go to Houston. I don't think he feels comfortable here with the Lakers and everything it entails.

    J.A. Adande:

    Houston the favorite?

I see it that way. I think they have the best overall package. Pair him with a young superstar and off the court, look at the broad, global implications of the Houston Rockets.

    Lakers chances percentage wise?

    20%.

    Guess where he signs?

I guess he goes to Houston. It might be a slightly educated guess.

I can't see how he can stay in LA and avoid CA taxes. California is especially aggressive in collecting taxes. If he owns a home in LA that would make an even worse case for him. Maybe if he lives in a hotel for the remainder of his contract in LA he wouldn't be considered a resident, but if you live and work in Cali for 9 months out of the year then you are considered a resident. October - June (if he gets to the Finals)

What I'm saying is if Jack talking to him has any effect on him at all that's pretty silly. Jack isn't helping the Lakers win any games so why does anything Jack have to say affect Dwight's decision? I'm saying if this were Lebron it would have no effect on him at all I'm guessing. If this is a pure basketball decision (as it should be) then this Hollywood stuff should be blown off by him. I don't know, I'm not in the guy's head but again if he's more excited about getting his own show and having conversations with Jack than playing with Harden and learning a thing or two from Mchale/Hakeem than the Lakers are for him then.

But it seems like if what you were saying is true he still has this hollywood illusion thing going on in his mind. I'm not twisting your words at all, I'm worried that he's not making this a 'basketball' decision anymore.

I wonder if the Rockets would be willing to offer Hakeem a formal role with the team and whether Hakeem would accept. Hakeem spends a part of his time in Jordan, so maybe a full-time gig is out of the question.

Thing is, we really don't know what he's all about. Sure, it's been reported he's all about winning, but it also has been reported he likes than Hollywood lifestyle. So we won't truly know, until, you know...

Thank you! Too many people are getting too high strong on this stuff lol. People are losing sleep, not going to work, being unproductive, not eating all over if Dwight comes to Houston or not. Now I'm a die hard fan just like the next person but Dwight does not know I even exist so why should I stress over all this? I want D12 to Houston too but not at the point where I am getting all worked up about it. 2 years ago we would have never even dreamed of being in this position so lets just enjoy the ride. If Howard wants to win a championship like he says he does then he will come to Houston and play with Harden, Josh Smith, and Parsons and build a super team like the Heat did. If he does not come here then obviously winning is not high on his agenda. Every player in the NBA knows that Houston is totally committed to winning now, so either way it's still great press for us! Just sit back and enjoy the show.
