Remember, McHale was brought in two years ago because we weren't expected to be contender and wanted to build and develop young assets. Well the plan isn't the same anymore, and looking at how Howard was handled last season, it comes to my attention that whoever coaches this team needs to be top notch and has to be able to implement a system that gets the most out of our player and gives your players a specific role and identity(team) to commit to.

Not here to bash McHale, but this will be the most talented team he's ever had to coach and I never view Mchale as a championship coach. He's definite not Pops or Phil. I put him in the mild of the Doug Collins, Byron Scott. He's a developer, groomer, more than a winner. IMO. And when i say winner i mean championship caliber coach. A guy that makes his timeouts mean something and change/alter the momentum/direction of the game. Sorry but i rarely witness that with McHale.

But then again, i don't think Spoelstra is on those levels either, but he was able to win off the talent of his team alone. Can we expect the same result with McHale and the Rockets. Because if Morey does the damn thing this off-season, i have championship aspiration/expectation and I refuse to have ot lower it because of coaching. Guy, we waited too long for this moment. its time we rise again. Coaching shouldnt stop us from achieveing fanatical happiness

Bait and switch? LOL. Who's the coach for the Vipers that was on McHale's staff last season? I forgot his name.

You still have OKC and Spurs. I would not put us as the favorites just yet to reach the finals.

Rockets will bring home Scott Brooks when he gets fired after next season.

Spoelstra is an exceptional coach, he's basically Pat Riley's minime except with a calm temperament.

His pace control through timeouts and substitutions are usually outstanding.

Yeah. This. Listen, I love Rudy T, but he was not any better of a coach than McHale is -- in my opinion of course.

I also really appreciate the way the players talk about McHale, how close they seem to get to him and the relationships he develops with them. Dwight needs some of what McHale brings -- both in the post and in between his ears.

And the work McHale did with that young thrown together roster last season should not be discounted. There was a lot of talent there, but there were also a lot of holes and a lot of changes. But McHale put out a style of play that maximized the talent that Morey had assembled and had one of the best offenses in the NBA.

I don't think McHale is a great coach -- but I think he is as good as a lot of coaches that won championships and were respected throughout the NBA -- coaches like Rudy T and Doc Rivers (former players who motivated and developed relationships with their players and who had strong X's and O's benches to help them out).

I think the thread is good though. This is a good question, and if the team struggles it will be a national question and narrative everyone will be talking about.

I think he's up for the job. He has some of the same qualities that have made Doc Rivers such a hot commodity in the coaching world. He also isn't tied to a system, which is a really great thing considering how fluid our roster is.

So, Brooks was being out coached, and now is viewed as a terrible game manager, and u want to bring him here? McHale will be the coach for the now, and the future, cuz he will get the most out of the big men.

Oh God, anything but JVG. He cant let go of 90's when it comes to coaching. His whole era here felt like 90's knicks team.

I always wondered though how he would have fare with morey as his GM.

JVG would be the perfect coach for Dwight Howard.

JVG can not coach superstars. He can not work with a GM like Morey.

This is just a stupid statement that a lot of people make. Rudy T was as good as anyone in finding the best way to win with the talent present. He made the three relevant in a league that had never scene the game played that way before. Now every team does it. After Hakeem was gone he looked at his team with Francis and Mobley and the rules which gave so much freedom to guard play. Rudy took advantage of it much like Harden and Lin do now. Francis and Mobleys numbers were never better and Houston was one of the most exciting teams to watch in spite of losing Drexler, Olajuwon, Pippen and Barkley being injured. He Rudy doesn't get sick they make the playoffs with a depleted roster. But they didn't and he got fired and we hired Van Gundy and he ran a swarming defense that depended on Yao too much and destroyed his feet.

Firing Rudy T is the biggest mistake this Rocket Organization has ever made. As for McHale he will do. He has good assistanc and Morey's analytics know exactly what works. All McHale has to do is be a leader the x's and O's are already doen for him. At first he wasn't doing that but now he is. The Rockets have an offense that depends on players shooting high percentage shots. No real plays just move the ball and if you get it in one of your sweet areas shoot it. Simple to do. And his job is to make sure when players like Harden deviate too much get back to the plan. That's his main job. Player management. Guide the players into doing what they already know they are supposed. I f Rudy was here he would see the brilliance in what Morey has developed and he would follow it to a T. Better than McHale because he is not as stubborn as McHale. But McHale is fine. Just don't grab Howard and try to pull him in a huddle. That would not be wise.

Karl, Sloan, Jackson, Brown, Gundy and Gundy are the only guys I view as upgrades.

The same guy that saw us score 60 points in a playoff game against the Jazz?

Love JVG, but the guy sucks as a coach!
