It was a sad day when David Kahn was fired. After taking over the comical bad GM torch from Isaiah Thomas in 2009, he has had a pretty good run. I am wondering now who is going to succeed him. Billy King had a chance last year after the Gerald Wallace debacle. But he redeemed himself by securing a pretty incredible roster now after the Celtics trade. Now, who is left to take over the reign? The NBA is better off with a GM who is comically bad.
Whoever makes the next bad trade. Bill Simmons will be all over it, bad GMs are his next favorite topic after Boston Celtics. To me, Colangelo and Geoff Petrie were even worse than Kahn. Sadly, they are gone too... At least Kahn basically robbed Washington in that Rubio trade. He did draft a bunch of busts... but without Kahn there would likely be no Rubio in Minnesota. He was ok-ish with money too, Sota is in a good shape now.
I was gonna say Geoff Petrie, but he's gone. Ernie Grunfeld and whoever is the Bucks GM seem like good candidates...
Yeah, you're right, he has drafted pretty well (even though he didn't know what he had in Tobias Harris). Interested to see how much money he gives Brandon Jennings though.
I wanted to include Petrie along with Kabn, but Petrie had a long history of success before turning comical.
The NBA GMs are starting to smarten up. I even like what the Bobcats did on draft night. That said, I would say the worst GM is whoever the Hawks GM is. He's setting his team up on the hope of getting Dwight and CP3, which was far fetched to begin with. I believe he signed Joe Johnson to that terrible contract, will likely lose Smith, and will only have Al Horford, who is okay, but overrated by those who feel he's underrated.
He got rid of all their bad contracts and J. Smith will likely be the next one. Good situation for a rebuild. They would've moved nowhere with Joe or Smith. And Ferry didn't sign Joe, he was the new GM in place that immediately traded him and other bad contracts like Marvin Williams.
No, Billy King is still far and away the worst. Stuck in lux tax hell, no draft picks in the next 5 years, all for a middling roster full of has beens? Pierce is 35 and Garnett is 37. That team might look decent on paper, but it sure ain't beating Miami.
Petrie's run soured after the Maloof's took a hands on approach. Coleangelo was respected during his tenure with the Suns. Billy King gave JJ that frontloaded 20M contract in Atlanta. For a few years the Hawks were laughed at for only drafting, assembling a team of 6-9 players from PG to C.
I was going to say Joe Dumars, but he drafted Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond and did have a good stretch during the Pistons' championship year.
Joe Dumars in Detroit throws his hat in the ring by picking up the option on Rodney Stuckey today. They may also be the team that overpays Josh Smith, which is baffling for a team with with Monroe and Drummond.
Billy King is terrible. They aren't going to win the East. They might now get passed 1st round, but no way they best a healthy Chicago or Indiana.
