No, you couldn't. The United States Constitution spells out exactly what treason is, and The U.S. Supreme court has defined enemies as a nation that the U.S. has declared war against. We aren't in a declared war against anyone. It is impossible that Snowden has committed treason.
I don't think this is necessarily correct or followed. We indicted someone foor treason for supporting Al Qaeda in 2006. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treason On October 11, 2006, a federal grand jury issued the first indictment for treason against the United States since Kawakita v. United States in 1952, charging Adam Yahiye Gadahn for videos in which he appeared as a spokesman for al-Qaeda and threatened attacks on American soil.
Well I believe that's what the Supreme Court has said. <object width="420" height="245" id="msnbc38a6e0" classid="clsid27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=10,0,0,0"><param name="movie" value="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32545640" /><param name="FlashVars" value="launch=52313756^1480^434700&width=420&height=245" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><embed name="msnbc38a6e0" src="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32545640" width="420" height="245" FlashVars="launch=52313756^1480^434700&width=420&height=245" allowscriptaccess="always" allowFullScreen="true" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash"></embed></object><p style="font-size:11px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #999; margin-top: 5px; background: transparent; text-align: center; width: 420px;">Visit NBCNews.com for <a style="text-decoration:none !important; border-bottom: 1px dotted #999 !important; font-weight:normal !important; height: 13px; color:#5799DB !important;" href="http://www.nbcnews.com">breaking news</a>, <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032507" style="text-decoration:none !important; border-bottom: 1px dotted #999 !important; font-weight:normal !important; height: 13px; color:#5799DB !important;">world news</a>, and <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032072" style="text-decoration:none !important; border-bottom: 1px dotted #999 !important; font-weight:normal !important; height: 13px; color:#5799DB !important;">news about the economy</a></p>
That would be covered under the 2001 Authorization for Force which specified the perpetrators of 9/11 as enemies.
I'm a liberal Democrat, as I've said here on many occasions, and I think is clearly reflected in my posts over many years, but this man is either mentally ill or, as you said, a traitor. I lean towards mentally ill.
And Robin Hood was just a thief, Ned Kelly was just a murderer, Muhammad Ali was just a draft dodger, and Gandhi was just a rebel promoting civil disorder. Don't be shocked by the fact that people don't share your black & white view of the world.
Don't forget Mandela who was training an army for a civil war when he got arrested. The world is not black and white no matter how much easier it would be if it was.
Now that he's stuck in a Russian airport I can't help but to think about the movie 'Terminal' with Tom Hanks. Someone will make a movie about this one day and it will be like 'Terminal' except a thriller with a much more of an exciting storyline.
100% mentally ill. Just like suicidal Iraq veterans, Snowden saw and did something nasty, inhuman, unconstitutional. He could not bury his guilt and had to sacrifice his young life to reveal the truth.... That's mentally ill except not ill enough to kill himself. On the other hand, if NSA could be stopped by this mentally ill traitor, USA will have less chance to become a fascism country and will be refrained from making enemies out of nowhere. USA will thank him later, I bet.
Saying Snowden is mentally ill is the most absurd thing I've heard throughout all of this. You had to know character assassination would follow once he did what he did, but this is stupid and bordering offensive.
That would be an easy way out for him and the nation. We need him to be mentally ill or we have to wake up. Just it.
Source proving he gave this data to Russia/China? You guys an assume all you want, but I like my accusations to be backed up by facts. For now, I'll consider him a hero. My stance may change when more details regarding this come to light.
Friend 1: Promise not to tell a secret? Friend 2: I promise. Friend 1: I sneak into my neighbor's houses at night while they are sleeping to see what kind of dirt I can find on them. Friend 2: {goes off to tell the police what Friend 1 is doing} Who is more wrong? Friend 1 for B&E or Friend 2 for breaking the promise?
Yeah that does smack of how Daniel Ellsberg was treated. I don't think he is mentally ill, maybe naive and someone who didn't think things out that well but how many guys in their 20's aren't guilty of naivety and short sightedness. You know what really is a sign of mental illness? Listening to Nickelback.
Yeah, my guess is he is more or less scrambling trying to figure out what to do next. But to suggest he has a mentall illness is low. If Everyone Cared so much about these issues, the world would be a better place. Spoiler Just for the record: I listen to obscure metal as I snobbishly look down upon those who listen to Nickelback - or really anything with a chorus.
I definitely think it's stupid. Especially in his age group, there's plenty of individuals who would think an action like this and striking back at THE MAN is a heroic action, it's what they've been taught and believe. Snowden to me is pretty much an example of "what would happen if you took the average Redditor and stuffed him in the NSA" - and Reddit's just filled with idiots, not mentally ill individuals.
