Agreed. What IS wrong with people in our state that they would try to allow abortions to continue after 20 weeks into a pregnancy?

    (See what I did there?)

    Say hello to the D&D

    Belongs in D&D.

In no way would banning abortions after 20 weeks and requiring doctors to be present and have admitting privledges be an effective end to abortion.

It would be an effective end to Planned Parenthood abortions in the state of Texas, and make abortion a more expensive (assumption).

Well, this ended up where it should have begun, although we've had innumerable threads in D&D about this topic, and they tend to go on and on and on and... well, anyone who's spent much time down here knows the picture. Besides that, texxx already brought up this particular topic (what the Lege shoved through). Having said all that, the Supreme Court, even with its right wing majority, will shoot this puppy down. Everyone in Austin knows that, particularly the Governor and the rest of the yahoos who pushed it. The whole thing is about political positioning for the next election cycle. Really, some of you need to get out more.

I read that the requirements for doctors, which have been deemed unnecessary by medical organizations, would force some Texans to drive 500 miles to exercise their Constitutional right to an abortion. That's really imposing a non-trivial cost on a lot of women for no (honest) reason.

Mods should merge them and keep this thread title (or better yet, create a new title).

    A merge seems logical.

I don't understand what the big deal is with banning abortion after 20 weeks. Hell, in France it's only allowed up until 12 weeks unless the health of the mother is at risk, and I don't see many people crying about France's "war on women."

I think the bigger issues are the technical/logistical restrictions on abortion clinics that has the effect of forcing many to shut down for purely political purposes that have no medical basis (needing to be within 30 miles of a hospital, etc).

The 20 week thing has been tried other places and has generally been thrown out, so regardless of the merits on that issue one way or another, I don't think it's the real issue here.

Restricting legal abortion <> ending abortion

You'll likely have more dead mothers, though, from trying illegal abortions.

A second trimester abortion carries a lot more risks and is more of a surgical procedure. For that reason, admitting privileges are probably a good idea in those cases. A Planned Parenthood clinic is not prepared to handle any of the things that could go wrong.

That being said, I think a distinction has to be made between rural areas and urban areas. In a rural setting, this could be an undue burden such as to run afoul of the USSC opinion in Casey.
