It really isn't that rare in recent times, 6 of the last 10 championships have been won by teams with European players playing key roles.

Good news! I was under the impression that because many GMs were shocked and didn't know he was available last year, were probably not much interested in his play but rather the potential of unloading players and getting a potential trade chip in return (like Morey). Or is it because he couldn't even break the rotation with us and the Kings. Don't really understand why not more teams would like him.

You mean European white guys or Europeans AND White guys? Because I mean...European white guys you already have Dirk and Pau Gasol, just off the top of my head. Just Europeans you also then have Tony Parker. That would mean they've played pretty major roles on 3 teams that have won 6 out of the last 10 rings...

I'm not so surprised at the trade, more as to why the Rockets are leaking this to the press (and season ticket holders)?

    1) Setting the floor for other Thomas Robinson offers before pulling the trigger
    2) Letting teams know ahead of the draft they possibly have a high pick to trade
    3) Setting the ground and sending signals for a bigger trade

Is this a desperation move or a pre-emptive strike?

I feel its a mixture of both cause first we hear no one is interested then we see a 1st round pick is on the table...so as of now, who the hell knows but im sure we'll have a clear answer by Thursday at the latest

Yeah, I also think the Rockets leaked this "news" to drum up some interest for him. Lets see if it works.

Just as I predicted, someone will want Thomas Robinson because it's a weak draft and he is both a better prospect and a shorter contract than any pick from 15 to 30.

As for cap space, that's a non-issue. What probably happened is that Morey believes the particular teams we are interested in dealing with would like a draft pick rather than Thomas Robinson. A draft pick also makes it easier to move Jeremy Lin if that ever became necessary. Lin + #34 + late first rounder must be very appealing to some teams (the Jazz come to mind).

Generally, a good draft pick is enough to convince any team to participate in a sign and trade rather than let an FA walk. So at worst, even if a sign and trade doesn't bring us/them a benefit in the contract we can offer, it is still something easier to move than T-Rob simply because his salary is a bit high.

If CP3 is a possibility and we can keep that quiet, I can see the Lakers accepting Lin/Asik/#34/this pick for Howard. That's a great package which may entice them to reconsider their goal of cap space in 2014. If I'm not mistaken that would free us to offer CP3 the MAX and a better shot at the title than with Garnett, Pierce and Doc. Howard, Harden, Paul, Parsons and any of our PF's is easily the best starting line up in the league.

The Draft is this Thurs. I don't quite get how you will be able to offer Asik/Lin/#34/ and the pick we might potentially get in the TRobinson trade to the Lakers in a Sign and Trade for Howard, when there hasnt been any indication as to whether DH wants to even sign here. And the fact that he cannot even be signed and traded atleast until 12am July 1st.

We pick players and send their rights to them in that package a few days later. No issues there, it's quite clear the Lakers could use a draft pick at literally any position.

If the Lakers say no, we keep those guys. I imagine it will be a SG and a big man - that way it's no biggie if we keep them, since we need that depth anyway.

Also, I know some people like to keep their expectation low, but on a relative basis there has actually been an incredible amount of indication that Howard is considering signing here. Reporters, insiders, journalists, speculators, even many Lakers fans. Considering Howard would give up a 5th year and some guaranteed money by signing in Houston, the news linking him with the Rockets is at least promising. At the moment, the Rockets have at least as good a chance as the Lakers.
