Reminds me of a Nicolas Batum/ Kawhi Leonard type.

I wouldn't be mad if he turns out like either of those players!

If they don't want to take a cap hit they can always trade this pick for like 2 future second rounders or a future first or something.

Also the rookie doesn't have to sign until after Dwight does, in which case I think we can exceed the cap.

This is a no brainer to me.

I think T-Rob fits in with what they want to do which is go young. Look at it from their perspective if they do move KG and Pierce they would love to add a top 5 guy from last year's draft especially in exchange for a mid round pick in a weak draft. There is no reason T-rob can't become an excellent player given minutes and time.

Seems like a perfect scenario to me.

Unsigned first round picks count toward the cap

True. Unless team and player sign paper saying the drafted player is not signing in NBA for the following season.

Right.... just like no one will give up a #1 for Robinson. There will be a team or two that give up their protected 2014 picks to move up this year. It always happens. Will Morey be in a position to make a move? We will know in a few weeks.

Why wouldn't they just trade Robinson for a conditional future #1?

Not exactly sure if it's really worth that extra step for the other team since future drafts may be better.

Also the legality of that may be in question. Due to the League's anti-circumvention power. If they think you're trying to get around a rule, like a cap hold, in a questionable way then they have the power to veto it.

Regardless, my hopes were that we could get a decent second round pick for TRob so I'm pretty thrilled with the possibility of a first rounder. In a perfect world I'd like to see him stick around another year and see how he develops but we're turning away from "collect young assets" mode and switching on "win now". Like Les said, he's got the money and he's ready to spend it on rings.

WE NEED a top 30. What's the point to drop Thomas Robinson's contract if you want a top 10? We should might as well keep Thomas.

Since we actually drafted Batum and could have drafted Leonard it would definitely be interesting if we could draft this guy, hold him overseas for a year, and then bring him in and see what he can do.

Also, something that has sort of been mentioned already is that a pick is a much more attractive trade asset than a player for the simple fact that the pick would appeal to all teams through trade rather than just a focus group of a handful of teams that might be interested in the player (this case, Robinson). This is something we learned with the Lowry deal...you take the pick when you can every time. Lowry in that package for harden never happens...but because its the pick, the thunder were intrigued. So if nothing else, the pick is easier to trade than Robinson...even if the target is still just for a future pick.

Definitely a good point to remember. If we really want CP3 then we've got to trade Lin and Asik.

As stated in the podcast, Asik won't be too much of a hassle to trade but Lin is a bigger problem. If you put a 1st round pick with Lin though... might make it easier.

    Edit:

If we really want CP3 we've got to trade Lin and Asik, assuming we've already signed Howard*

But, but, but Carl Herrerra AKA Patrick Patterson Jr. Said we'd never get a first round pick in return for Robinson, tho!

Perhaps this trade is all about T-Rob, and has nothing to do with Dwight at all. Consider this for a moment: What if Kevin McHale & his staff didn't like what they were seeing in the 3 months they've had T-Rob? They realize he's a dud, and acquiring him was mistake. What will they do?

Trade him in July? Of course not. Teams will wonder why the Rockets are giving up on him even more quickly than the Kings did. Teams will be very wary, and it will drive T-Rob's trade value down.

No, the proper course of action would be to trade T-Rob before free agency begins in July. The Rockets field offers under the guise that they're only trying to clear cap room for Dwight. The Rockets pretend like the trade is all about cap room, and has nothing to do with their assessment of T-Rob. That way they can put T-Rob in the trade market without raising red flags.
