...and win it with 3 in the 11th! Quad Cities also snagged a 5-3 win. Velasquez went 3 innings, 3 Ks, 5 hits, 1 run, but 0 walks.
Even though Cosart has his bad days, there are days like this that make you think he could make it as a starter. I say they keep him starting in the bigs until he shows he can't handle it.
Andrew Thurman is in Tri City. Talked to him yesterday and he said he will start pitching in 4 or 5 days... so probably some time next week he will pitch... Mark Appel is also coming to Tri City. Everything i have read is he is going to Florida for a week then coming to Tri City. Tri City next homestand starts wednesday vs lowell (red sox) for 2 games then connecticut(tigers) come in for a weekend series... they expect appel to get 1 or 2 starts.... then move to quad cites and then corpus christi.... so i would expect to see Appel in Tri City sometime next week for there homestand...
Thursday Stories Appalachian League opens up play today. Lancaster and Quad Cities kick off the 2nd half. Tri-City mounts a huge comeback to keep their perfect start to the season. Oh wow. Jarred Cosart with zero walks. Recap Oklahoma City 4, New Orleans 1 Jarred Cosart had a marvelous outing in the Crescent City, and the best news of all: he didn't issue a single walk in his 6 shutout innings. Instead, he allowed 4 hits and struck out 8. Rhiner Cruz worked around a walk to retire the side in the 7th. The Zephyrs got 1 off Alex Sogard via an RBI double in the 8th. That was the only hit he allowed in the inning after he had walked Jake Smolinski with 1 out. He also struck out 1. The Redhawks decided to go with Josh Zeid in the 9th, and despite giving up a double to Kyle Skipworth to lead off the inning, he struck out the next 3 batters to end it. On offense, they got 2 RBIs apiece from Carlos Perez and Che-Hsuan Lin. Perez's single in the 6th broke a scoreless tie, and Lin followed that up with a 2-run double. Perez added another single in the 7th. Brett Wallace went 4-5 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored. Sigh... if only he could do this in the majors. Brandon Laird was 2-5 with a run scored. In the series finale, Asher Wojciechowski will get the start for OKC, and he'll be opposed by Jared Rogers. First pitch is at 7:00. Frisco 2, Corpus Christi 0 Jake Buchanan allowed a 2-run homer to Alex Buchholz in the 1st. Those ended up being the only 2 runs of the game. To Buchanan's credit, he recovered very nicely. Unfortunately, he still had to take the L.... because the offense was held to 3 hits. Buchanan ended up allowing 4 other hits, walking 1, and striking out 1 in 5 innings. Carlos Quevedo threw 2 perfect innings, and Sergio Escalona had a 1-2-3 8th, striking out 2. Erik Castro was 2-3 and Raoul Torrez had the other hit. Game 2 of this series pits Nick Tropeano and Bobby Doran against Kevin Pucetas. First pitch is at 7:05. Lancaster 11, Rancho Cucamonga 3 Pretty good start to the 2nd half, I must say. The Jethawks jumped out to an 11-0 lead after the 4th and won rather comfortably. They got 5 in the 1st and the 4th, with 1 in the 3rd sandwiched in between. Joe Sclafani scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch from Garrett Gould. Telvin Nash then hit a 2-run double, and Tyler Heineman, who entered this game 4-43 this month, followed that up with a 2-run homer (3; 2 sent out). In the 3rd, Andrew Aplin scored on another Rancho error. The 5 in the 4th came courtesy of 2 2-run homers hit by Chris Epps (7) and M.P. Cokinos (6) and an RBI double from Sclafani. Preston Tucker's 10-game hitting streak was snapped, as he went 0-3 with a walk and a run scored. David Rollins was untouchable in his 5 innings, as he allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out a season-high 9. Tyson Perez allowed 3 consolation runs in 4 innings. He also gave up 5 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 5. Luis Cruz and Kyle Hallock will get the start in game 2 of this series, and their opponent will be Lindsey Caughel. First pitch is at 7:00 Pacific. Quad Cities 5, Kane County 3 The River Bandits also kicked off the 2nd half on a winning note, thanks to a big night from Rio Ruiz. The River went 3-4 with 2 RBI doubles. The first came in the 2nd to put QC on the board, and he ended up scoring himself on an error. The 2nd RBI double came in the 8th and pushed the River Bandits' lead to 5-3. Teoscar Hernandez doubled in the 3rd and came around to score on an RBI single from Jesse Wierzbicki. Hernandez chipped in with a sac fly in the 5th after Ruben Sosa hit a 1-out triple. Juan Minaya assumed the role of Vince Velasquez's partner after Jamaine Cotton was placed on the DL. He went 4 innings and gave up 2 on 6 hits, walked 3, and fanned 4. Richard Rodriguez worked around a hit to retire the side in the 5th. Velasquez allowed a run on 5 hits and struck out 3 in 3 innings. And finally, John Neely allowed 2 hits in the 9th, but he was able to shut the door for his 11th save. He struck out 1. Mike Hauschild and Colton Cain will face off against Tayler Scott in game 2 of this 2nd-half opening series. First pitch will be at 7:00. Tri-City 8, Lowell 5 in 11 innings The ValleyCats erased a 5-0 deficit with 3 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th, and they took the opener with 3 more in the 11th. What a comeback. Edison Frias got the start and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Charles Basford, in his organizational debut, came on in the 5th and allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1, while only getting 2 outs. Kyle Westwood, in his pro debut, not only got the final out of the 5th, but proceeded to no-hit the Spinners for the next 3 innings, only allowing a walk and striking out 2. Albert Minnis threw 2 scoreless and eventually got the win. He allowed a hit and struck out 1. Chia-Jen Lo struck out the Spinners in order in the bottom of the 11th to get the save. The comeback started in the 8th with a Ryan Dineen single. After a Tony Kemp walk, James Ramsay singled; the resulting error allowed Dineen to score. After Conrad Gregor flew out for the 2nd out, Ronnie Mitchell hit an infield single to load the bases. Mike Martinez and Jon Kemmer then drew bases-loaded walks to make it a 5-3 game. In the 9th, D'Andre Toney hit a sac fly, and Gregor's RBI groundout tied it at 5. Gregor would give TC the lead in the 11th with a 2-run single, and an error allowed him to advance to 2nd. A Ronnie Mitchell groundout advanced him to 3rd, and he'd score an insurance run on a wild pitch. He finished 2-6. Tony Kemp finished 2-5 with 2 runs scored. Jose Fernandez was also 2-5 with a run scored. Dineen was 1-3 with 2 walks and 3 runs scored. In the middle game of this series, Randall Fant will mark his pro debut by getting the start. He and his partner, whose identity we'll find out once Fant leaves the game, will take on Jamie Callahan. First pitch will be at 7:05 Eastern. Bluefield 5, Greeneville 0 The Appy Astros were blanked in the season opener. Marc Wik and Wallace Gonzalez each had 2 hits; Wik's double was their only extra-base hit. Bobby Borchering started at 1B and went 0-4 with 2 strikeouts out of the 3 spot. They also hit into 4 double plays. Enderson Franco pitched reasonably well, as he allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4 in 5 innings. Frederick Tiburcio worked around a walk to retire the side in the 6th, striking out 1. Ditto for Jordan Mills in his professional debut, as he worked the 7th inning. He didn't strike out anyone, though. Gerardo Ramirez was touched up for 3 in the 8th on 3 hits. He walked 1, and struck out 1 in the inning. Chris Lee, in his 3rd shot at Greeneville, will start the middle game of this series. He'll be opposed by Zak Wasilewski. First pitch will be at 7:05 Eastern. GCL Astros begin its season today Against the Braves at noon Eastern. DSL Red Sox 4, DSL Astros 3 The Academy walked off losers, as Junior Garcia served up a solo homer to Pablo Urena to lead off the 9th. After the Red Sox put up 2 in the 1st, Arturo Michelena got an RBI on a fielder's choice in the 2nd, and Brian Peña hit his 1st professional homer, a solo shot in the 5th that tied the game at 2. The Red Sox answered with 1 in the bottom of the inning, and in the 7th, Jarico Reynoso re-tied the game with an RBI single. Reynoso finished 2-3, while Luis Payano had the other hit for the Academy. Juan Hernandez went 4 2/3 and allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 3. Garcia pitched 3 1/3, and that homer to Urena proved to be the difference. He allowed 1 other hit, walked 1, and struck out 4. The Astros will now host the Red Sox at their complex. First pitch is at 10:30 AM Atlantic.
David Rollins is quietly putting together a really good year. A 4.07 ERA in the Cali league is rock solid (2.42 ERA away from the hangar) His peripherals are what really look good 9.2 K/9, .220 Avg and 1.18 WHIP 3.1 BB/9 could be better, but it's not terrible considering his K rate. Doesn't appear to have big stuff, but it's not garbage either. I'd like to see him in Corpus, his numbers have consistently been good as a pro.
He's a guy who was drafted 4 times (how many people can say that?). 23 in Hi-A isn't terrible, plus he's a lefty, so I'd think he's got a chance. His peripherals against lefties are pretty good (16/4 K/BB in 21 innings, though .238 BAA) as well. Given our lack of lefties in the system, I wouldn't be shocked to see him make it as a lefty reliever.
He's been sitting 92-94 this year which is nice, especially for a lefty. I haven't seen any reports on how effective his changeup and slider are this season. He's probably the most intriguing LH starter the Astros have in full season ball.
GCL Astros lineup vs. Braves: 1. Jason Martin, CF 2. Brandon Wikoff, 2B 3. Tyler White, 3B 4. Yonathan Mejia, 1B 5. Brett Booth, C 6. Luis Reynoso, SS 7. Jake Nottingham, DH 8. Luis De La Rosa, RF 9. Javaris Reynolds, LF Starter: Ambiorix De Leon
At what point do you guys think they'll start promoting guys? MLB All-Star break? Trade deadline/Aug. 1?
Everyone's in action for the first time this season, as the GCL Astros will take the field for the first time in 2013 against the Braves at Disney World. Now... on to the TSHMG for June 20, 2013. Three Stars 3. M.P. Cokinos, C, Lancaster 2-3, 2-R HR(6), 2 R Your daily dose of Coke: a 2-run shot that completed the transition of that contest into a laugher. 2. Rio Ruiz, 3B, Quad Cities 3-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, R Haha this guy still thinks Kobe is the best. The River's numbers have steadily improved. His BABIP is still pretty low (.279; Midwest League average: .307), as he's still hitting a lot of grounders. But, he's walking at a well-above average clip too. I think Rio's held his head above water considering that he's just turned 19, and his numbers should continue to improve as the season progresses. 1. Jarred Cosart, P, Oklahoma City, and David Rollins, P, Lancaster Cosart: W(7-3), 6 IP, 4 H, 8 K Rollins: W(7-4), 5 IP, 2 H, BB, 9 K Cosart continues to make PCL hitters miserable. He didn't make himself miserable for once by not issuing a single free pass. It also appeared that aside from 3 OKC errors that ended up extending his outing, he was pretty much cruising. Rollins' emergence has been a pretty interesting development in the Lancaster rotation. Despite his 3.1 BB/9, his walk rate (8.3%) is actually slightly below the Cali League average (8.8%). Honorable Mentions Corpus pitchers (Jake Buchanan, Carlos Quevedo, and Sergio Escalona): Buchanan had a nice rebound start, despite getting the loss. Quevedo marked his return from the DL with 2 perfect innings and Escalona completed the fine pitching performance. Unfortunately, the Hooks offense didn't supply them with any runs to work with. Kyle Westwood, Albert Minnis, and Chia-Jen Lo, P, Tri-City: Combined 6 1/3 shutout innings in relief really helps when you're trying to stage a desperation rally, and end up completing it. Vince Velasquez, P, Quad Cities: Man, he's had a pretty extended run of bad luck as of late. His 4.23 ERA masks a 3.14 FIP and his .330 BABIP has gotten to that level, thanks to a .380 May and .392 this month. Despite all that, his peripherals still remain pretty good. Conrad Gregor, 1B/OF, Tri-City: Came through in the clutch late. Josh Zeid, P, Oklahoma City: A change in the 9th was rather welcome for the Redhawks. Enderson Franco, P, Greeneville: Had a nice outing, although he was also the victim of no run support. Goat Drew blanks.
