Does this thread have the potential to be a more epic badlee post than "Terrance Jones: A Lesser Howard?"?
If you can get him for ridiculously cheap and have insurance on his contract where if he gets hurt again, you're not out whatever we sign him to. Not a bad idea, but I'd put it as plan D or E.
I would take a flyer on Bynum if the price was right but at this point I would view him as a back up to Asik and not a starter.
So do guys with back issues, but that doesn't stop people for wanting to trade for him and or sign him to a max deal.
Judging by the time TS started this thread I'll just go ahead and dismiss it as he was drunk and likely under the influence of hardcore drugs
"Better off" Come on Badlee. Will the Rockets ultimately have to take a look at Bynum in free agency after options 1 & 1A are exhausted? Possibly. Im not opposed to it if he's acquired under agreeable circumstances (low risk, high reward circumstances). However if the Rockets are acquiring him under low-risk, high reward circumstances, Philly, Dallas, Cleveland, Atlanta, etc. will ALL want to take that chance at a low risk acquisition (large 1 year contract with team option on year 2... or something similar) which will end up driving up the price to something somewhat risky anyways. Some team is going to end up taking SOME kind of long term risk on Andrew Bynum, and I hope that team is not Houston. If for some reason free agency gets crazy, and all of the teams with cap space go spend crazy early on other players then maybe... just maybe the Rockets can stay patient and snag him on a preferable contract, but I dont think that's likely. This off season free agency will end up being like the draft for these teams. You make a list of your top targets and a price associated, and see what falls to you when its your turn to pick.
Just for comparisons sake... Dwight Howard's worst game of 2012-13 Nov. 23 @ Memphis 37 minutes 2/7 FG 3/6 FT 4 total rebounds 3 ast 5 turnovers 5 pf Andrew Bynum's best game of 2012-13 DNP, Injured.
And here I thought surely everyone has come to realize that Bynum is too damaged to stake your franchise on. I stand corrected.
Maybe not better off, but it could be a viable plan b or c with the right contract. We could try and convince him to sign a max deal for two years, team option on the second year. That way he is essentially an expiring contract as soon as we sign him, and if he does play well then we can be very good next year. If not, we'll have tons of cap space and can pursue other free agents in 2014. Obviously, the major kink in this thinking is that his agent will push for more guaranteed years given his injury history, and if some other team is willing to sign him for longer it wouldn't work. But, you have to wonder who really wants to take the big of a chance on Bynum? I don't think many, if any. Then the question becomes, who else can offer that kind of contract and how attractive is that destination for Bynum? The only other way we could compete is perhaps make some of the money on the second year guaranteed, knowing that we can soften the salary cap blow by using the stretch provision.
if we failed in the DH12 hunt, i wonder how a duo of Asik and Bynum alternating at the C position would work?
Sorry bro, but "degenerative knee condition" means it's all downhill from here on out. Not only will he never be 100% again, but he will need more than one surgery and miss a buttload of games. I'm kinda anxious to see which gm will eventually end up getting fired for offering him a long term contract. Asik's solid, we need a max PF.
Howard is one of the most reliably healthy players EVER... Bynum can't play 70 games, and I don't think he will ever be able to... Dwight has missed like 20 games in his entire career...
