Not sure if he's going to hide it that he set Rothstein up, so I'm curious to see how that will play out. This series follows gangster history and political corruption history pretty well, given that it's historical fiction. The people, the places, the events are all real, mixed in with Nucky and other created characters. I'm not well versed in it, so I love watching it happen and then reading up on the history afterwards and seeing how many things actually happened. Even the most made-for-tv moments that can't seem real, actually happened, like Jess Smith's mysterious suicide. Anyhow, I'm aware of major deaths occurring unnaturally to many of the big characters in the show because the murders happened, so it's coming; the question is how events unravel.
I do the same thing, I've avoided reading too much about a lot of the real people mainly to avoid any coming spoilers.
Can any one of you guys answer why Nucky didn't go to the local law enforcement for assistance when he was initially running away from Gyp's guys?
It seemed like Gyp and Masseria's men combined to greatly outnumber any local law enforcement. It also seemed like local law enforcement stayed out of gangster issues for the sake of their own good.
1. After all the corruption and election rigging with Eli the Sherriff they probably do not want to be associated with Nucky. 2. Nucky probably could not even make it to the police because anywhere he was seen in public he was being shot at, like when he tried to take Eddy to the Hospital. 3. Just like in Tabor Heights, Gyp might have bought off the police. Also, it never mentioned if Eddy was okay after his gunshot wound in episode 11.
Gyp had 40-50 guys. It would seem unlikely that Atlantic City would have less cops than that. It wasn't as prominent but it's quite evident Nucky was still running things. He still had Mayor Bader in his back pocket. Tabor Heights was a small town that is 60 miles away. There was basically a single guy Gyp needed to get on his payroll. This was Atlantic City. Doesn't seem plausible that he could take over the local police without anyone local finding out about it.
Yeah, the show didn't really explore that angle. I just took it as the cops didn't want to get themselves killed and were already used to turning a blind eye. Tabor Heights had like 2 cops. AC is supposed to be a decent sized city, but always looked small town the way it was portrayed. Time to google some history. Edit: Holy crap, Nucky was a real person. I didn't know that before, lol. Okay, I need to stop reading about this because I like the show's surprises. Edit 2: Population was around 50,000 back then. I don't know how many cops.
I mean the scenes from the jail cells make it look like that they might have had about 8-10 cops total...
The current population is only 40k, in the city at least. Probably about 250k in the metro. The past decade has Atlantic City fluctuating between 7-10 cops per 1000 citizens. Using those numbers then it's from 350 to 500 cops back in the day. Even at half of that you have 175 to 250 cops.
I wouldn't be shocked if the local police force was 50 patrolling the boardwalk, and I think 50,000 was the whole population of AC in the 1920's. I really don't know though, and neither does anyone here. I am pretty sure that most cops were concentrated in the city center and boardwalk and probably didn't have neighborhood patrols. It's not like nowadays where you call 911 and someone is there in 5 to 12 minutes.
Ok, so I've just watched the first 5 episodes and I'm bored out of my mind. If I don't like what I've seen so far, is it going to get any better?
Yes, but not soon. The entire 1st season is like setup and character building. You have to have the patience you had growing up as a kid reading novels for school. But if you can't do that or won't enjoy that type of entertainment even at its highest quality, then this show probably won't satisfy you.
No it's the opposite actually, I LOVE character development, I just couldn't tell if this was one of those shows. Thanks!
Most people thought the first half of the season was really slow... it picks up a GREAT DEAL in the second half, and the finale is awesome. RICHARD EFFING HARROW! Spoiler Anyone know why they abandoned the story arc with Agent Van Alden? He and his wife kill that guy and you'd think it would escalate for them through the remainder of the season... but not a peep. Huge bummer.
What a great show this is... Middle of the second season, and I am in love with the characters. Chocky White is ****ing awesome...
