Even though Garnett shoots much better than Asik at every spot on the floor, Asik has a better overall FG% because the bulk of his shots come from better locations.

Tweet it to Morey, he would probably drool over this ;) To me it's deceiving but I can understand what they are saying.

    (54.1-(80% X 60.5))/20% = 28.5%

Tyson Chandler has led the league in fg% how many times with a shot range of 3 inches.

Asik has the benefit of being able to select good shots since he's not being relied on offensively. Garnett can't really be as selective.

When Chandler learned to just put in the garbage, ORs/lobs etc, is when TC finally became a valuable NBAer.

True, but the article also points out how Houston is ranked higher in overall FG% than they are from any individual spot. So it applies to the team as a whole.

Hopefully he works on a 10ft or less jumper this offseason, and his FT% and O game opens up a bit.

I'm sure Morey knows this, and if he is genuinely interested in Josh Smith then I'm sure that this strategy is one of the primary reasons he could see Smith being succesful here.

if he stops thinking he is the iceman, we could even see a more significant improvement in turkish O's fg%, which would be even more incredible.

    2013-2014 season:
12.9 pts/11 rebounds/70%fg/68%Ft and to top it off....80% from mid range jump shots.

All Asik needs to do it dunk that ****, don't do fancy reverse lay-ups. Man it was just frustrating to not see Asik take advantage of his natural girth and just plow through the defender.

So, the writer is saying that 1) if you shoot only from withing 3 feet of the basket you are likely going to have a higher FG% than someone who shoots some shots farther away from the basket and 2) that you don't need to add good shooters to improve efficiency and instead can just get more dunks and layups.

It is fine in theory but there's the whole "defense" thing to consider. If you don't have enough capable range shooters, defenses can more easily pack the paint and reduce your effieciency on those close shots and cause a lot of turnovers. Those %s from various spots on the floor are not static numbers but can change depending how contested those shots are.

Houston does have good shot selection (layups, FTs and 3s) but having the whole team more or less imitate Omer Asik's shot pattern isn't exactly a viable strategy. Also, FG% itself is a laughably bad measure for scoring efficiency. James Harden's shot pattern and his resulting high ORtg and TS% are a better illustration of what the Rockets' shot selection strategy is.

In other words, Asik is smart enough to know that he sucks as a shooter and therefore doesn't take bad shots.

Its a good trait to have in a player, but can be a bad trait to have in a team. Players that can't shoot are known quantities to our opponents and invite their defenders to double others.

Nice stats but they did not show how many balls Asik bubbled and turned over, and plain just failed to catch, which resulted in turnovers, under the basket and at point blank range. The stats could be interpreted in a way that shows that the Rockets need a legitimate post scorer in order to get far in the playoffs.

Maybe. But, the Rockets had one of the best offenses in the league last season, so their approach to shot selection has some vindication, defense or not.
