Today I stopped by Whole Foods on the way to work. Antonio McDyess was in line ahead of me. Conversation was as follows: me: "You're Antonio McDyess, aren't you?" AM: "I sure am." me. "I'm still a little mad at you for not signing with the Rockets in the early 2000's." AM: *laughs* "You have a good memory!" The rest was even more boring small talk. He was a nice guy. I know. I know. Cool story, bro. Still, I thought it was neat so I shared.
I think players like comments like that. Shows you are an actual fan of the game/team. Pics? Grocery list? Make and model of his car? Did you get his number? C'mon bro, details!
Thanks for sharing, ow how I would've loved McDyess on this team. We actually were linked to him twice after that as well, around 2007-08 and again around 2009-10. That guy was a monster, we could use a PF like him right now. I hope TJ can turn into a player like him, he has the shot blocking and dribbling down. Now the shooting and rebounding and we have a gem!
Kirby location? He's always there. When I see him around the city my first instinct is that he was a Rocket. It's weird. I guess since he's just kind of always been around.
You know, I didn't even look at what he was buying! Ha. p.s. between the photos of his home and the questions about his purchase, this is starting to get creepy!
Awww man, McDyess was so awesome. He's way up there with my favorite non-Rockets, like Kevin Johnson and Michael Finley.
I didn't take any photos. I didn't want to really intrude on him. But he was chatting with the cashier and it seemed easy enough to squeeze into the conversation so I did. He was polite and friendly, but seemed slightly disappointed to be recognized. I don't know how to explain it, but at first I got the impressed he enjoyed his anonymity there and would have preferred to keep talking to the cashier, who had absolutely no idea who he was. However, I mentioned to him that I used to work for a company that handled half of the NBA's travel arrangements, and he seemed more at ease once I told him who I used to work for. Nonetheless, he was just buying a few things and getting out. I doubt he wanted to stop for photos. Plus, he was a fantastic player before the injuries - but I wasn't entirely joking. I'm still a little mad at him for picking the Suns over the Rockets.
