Asik would pick up $10m/season if he were on the open market, and Parsons maybe a bit more/less than that. To think that the Lakers could acquire those types of players does not make sense.

Well, Kobe, Artest, and Dwight Howard are perennial NBA all defensive players and Dwight and Artest were both DPOY. I think their defense was fine. It's just that they never had a chance to all play together for a reasonable amount of time to gel as a team. Next season, given a healthy roster and a good pre-season, they should have the players to go all the way. This is also assuming Kobe comes back by the all-star break. And if not, 2014 would be a perfect opportunity to blow it up and re-load.

Hello 2004, 2013 is calling, Kobe's god awful defense this year is only going to be that much worse without the spring in his step, he's going to be Nash caliber bad.

Perhaps Kobe can make it as a backup next year, I don't see him being too happy with that idea though, better than Metta though who should be taking the shortest route to retirement.

Do you really believe this or are you trolling? While they will be healthier (except for Kobe) Artest and Nash are going to be a year older and i dont think D'Antoni knows what to do with Pau. If Dwight leaves I think you're looking at a 35 win team. What makes you think Nash will be able to stay on the court? You must have a lot of confidence in Hill, Meeks, and Blake. I know the Lakers are good at pulling star players out of their butts (Kareem, Magic, Kobe, and Pau) and I have no doubt they will be relevant again soon it wont be in '13-'14.

Sup FD, and yes I was aware of the 10 day moratorium before contracts can be signed. That's great because it gives us leverage to work out all the fine details to show that we can get these complicated deals done for these two players.

Actually I may not have seen that post (I know you write a lot of them but I don't have a problem with that like some others here do), but this does give me new information that I wasn't aware of, or maybe I just read it somewhere wrong previously. As you see I calculated for 12 spots, but I see if the way Bima explained it to you is correct, then that would leave us with approximately $490,000 less to offer CP3 in a contract. That's cutting it close because we are already asking him to take a significant discount, so we would maybe even have to waive G.Smith (giving us another $394,000 or so) to add to the initial salary of CP3. Also, I thought CP3's max was 18.5, but I may have been wrong and it's actually 18.7 as you say it is, but that's how I came up with the $16,650,000 as being 10% of his max.

After looking it up, I'm pretty sure what Aleron said here is true:

Using that rule, DH12 would only be able to sign for $18,621,066, thus actually taking his full 10% salary discount as mentioned in the proposed agreement. But if he wants to play with CP3 and ASIK, then that's what it would take to get it done.

I totally agree that timing is important. The ONLY way that this is even remotely possible is if this is what both CP3 and DH12 really want and they are willing to make sacrifices to achieve it. Getting both of them without them taking paycuts and helping us to possibly force a hand or two if possible, is really probably not possible.

I don't really believe that Houston would be in any real jeopardy of not signing Howard because if this is what he wanted, I don't feel that there is NO way that we couldn't trade out Lin, Asik and TRob to sign him outright as I mentioned in the earlier post. Even if teams played hardball because they knew we were forming a super team, we could still get it done be sending out draft picks instead of getting some back, the latter being what I think their fair market value really is. I think you mentioned this in a recent post as well.

I would agree that this is the hardest part, but most probably route IF we are going to sign them both and build a super team. I agree, CP3 has to consider the money and his health...BUT he has to also know that the likelihood that he wins a championship staying with the Clippers or signing with the Hawks is NOT really good at all! If he signs 5 more years with the Clippers, he is almost saying it is okay that I may not win a championship one day, as long as I got paid. That's an option, but is that what he really wants?

But I do agree that we have to do whatever it takes to get both of their salaries to the point that they don't have to take more than a 10% cut on their max salary potential. If they want what Lebron, Wade and Bosh have achieved in the last three years of going to the finals, then they have to look at what they did in accepting less salary also.

It would only be difficult if the Lakers are saying we don't want to be the only way they form a superteam using DH12. If we have potential trades already set up to move Lin, Asik & TRob and sign DH12 outright, then the Lakers will only be hurting themselves more than hurting us by making us lose Asik, but they get nothing in return for DH12. Sure that's a possibility, but a smart business man wouldn't do that when they could have Lin, TRob and RWhite on their team with team options next year on the last two, and only another year after that on Lin. They really have no other way that I can think of to get in some youth and talent that could possibly help them.

Them demanding Asik is a non-starter if we already have a trade partner waiting for Asik that would give us a future draft pick back. If that's the case and they know it, I don't really see them refusing to SnT as a really smart business possibility, even thought they probably would not be happy to do it and therefore DO IT, albeit reluctantly.

Just curious, but why couldn't/wouldn't the Lakers SnT Howard to another team? Even if it's a bad team with good young assets, Lakers technically could still do what they want right? I'm just wondering how the Rockets are the only team to offer young assets to the Lakers?

Celts might decide to blow it up...but that means they'd try to move at least one of them. We aren't suddenly going to get those players on vet mins...

As far as Lin + TRob for Millsap, I mean I guess. That's kinda weird w/ TJones, DMo AND Asik also eating up our depth in the 4 and 5 positions. That just seems like poor planning...lol.

Does he have a no-trade clause? If not, couldnt' the Lakers technically do whatever they want for their best interests?

Dwight Howard is a free agent. Dwight has to agree to be S&T to this "bad team with good assets".

He's not even under a contract, how can he have a no trade clause? The answer is exactly what JR said

ya it was just kinda a bs dream scenario to win a title next year i mean we could even bring doc in to be an assistant coach lol

but on a serious note i think that D mo and T Jones' potential and relatively cheap contracts warrants keeping them around for a couple more seasons to find out what they actually are. all thats really clear to me from last year is that they are not ready to seriously contribute to a championship caliber team.

    Delusional lakers fans:rolleyes:

kobe is going to be 35 coming of major injury, nash is the worst defender in the league at 39 years old, paul is 33, metta is 34....how are you going to defend young teams with your whole core over 33 and broken down...not to mention you dont have a bench....so no break for said old players....and last but not least you have a coach who dosent even care for DEFENSE.

Ok good point. Then the Lakers are really irrelevant at this point correct? Why would Dwight want to agree to SnT for the Lakers at all? He could just go and sign with any team he wants.

It doesn't sound like the Lakers can benefit him in any way correct?

Yes. The only reason a S&T would be relevant to Dwight is if it can get him to a destination that he couldn't get to on his own. Brooklyn would fit the criteria, but the apron issue takes them out of play by any reasonable measure.

Well, if Dwight did not want to go to a team under the cap (so not us), such as the Nets, he could say, "Look LAL, I'm leaving you for Houston BUT I would rather go to the Nets. SnT me there so you at least get something, or else I am leaving to HTown and you end up w/ nothing." Just using it as an example -- realistically, BKN probably can't clear enough space to do a SnT for Dwight.

Houston may also want to SnT Dwight to unload assets that might be harder to unload separately. Say we want CP3 and Dwight, after the 2 players have agreed verbally. Houston would need to unload Lin + Trob + Asik at LEAST. Doing separate deals = hard. If LAL (or LAC I guess) is willing to do a SnT w/ us for those assets, it sort of is like a 'two birds w/ one stone' situation, and LAL isn't left empty-handed (assuming they prefer the assets to flexibility or cap room in 2014).
