Looking forward to free agency....for Chris Paul to be able to get the Clippers to agree to sign and trade him to his preferred destination he's going to have to have another destination that he is willing to sign outright to. And the only way Chris Paul does that is if he feels like it would be a better team than him re-signing with the Clippers. He's not going to go to a team that is locked up in mediocrity with long term contracts and he's not going to go to a team that is a non-contender and wait for them to build around him. So it has to be a ready-made situation that he can simply sign in to and be competitive from Day 1.

Looking at the Hawks: If they re-signed Smith to around a $50 million/4 year deal and they signed Paul to a max deal, they'd have around $5-$8 million cap space left (depending on what the cap number actually comes in at) to add another player. But their core would be Paul, Horford, Smith.

Is Horford/Smith a better duo than Deandre/Blake as a core for Paul to play with?

Funny how the Hawks are still chasing the guy they could have taken 2nd overall in the 2005 draft.

Marvin Williams was the man tho!

Skill always trumps athleticism and power...

There is a reason why Blake was exposed vs Memphis for a phony big man...he is just our generation version of Shawn Kemp...just waiting for him to get fat in a few years...

Did you even watch Shawn Kemp play?

Back to the OP's question: Horford by himself is already better than Griffin and Jordan.

    Shawn Kemp?

Go look at Kemp's playoff runs from 94-98.

Can't believe anyone would think comparing a player to Shawn Kemp would be an insult.

Kemp was amazing with GP...but Kemp closest contemporary is Griffin...

No one denies that Kemp was just a better player than everyone you have mentioned so far, but Griffin has played just 3 seasons in the NBA...while his stats have been going down, he is the closest current NBA player to the way the Reign Man played...

George Karl coached Kemp... and the following excerpt is from him...

    http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/03/blake-griffin-reminds-george-karl-of-shawn-kemp/

    Reign Man II?

It’s hard to come up with a good historic comparison for Blake Griffin, because that combination of size and athleticism just do not come along very often. If ever.

But Nuggets coach George Karl had one that I liked — Shawn Kemp. Here’s his quote via the Los Angeles Times.

“I’ve talked to a couple of guys who’ve said, ‘Was Shawn as powerful?’” said Denver Nuggets Coach George Karl, who coached Kemp in Seattle, before Thursday’s game. “I think that’s the guy who’s closest….

“This kid, he gets so high above the rim. It reminds me of when I was an athlete and I could jump and we got the 8-foot hoops,” Karl said. “He does things that we used to do on 8, maybe 7-foot [hoops]. You know, throwing it down from three feet away.”

I’m not sure I could do what Griffin does on the little Nerf hoop hanging off the top of a door in my house.

For those of you younger readers who hear Kemp’s name and think of the bloated post-lockout version of the man, or joke about his personal life, do remember that he was also a force on the court. Watch the video above. You’ll see why this may be the best Griffin comparison there is. And it’s still not perfect.

You are looking at Shawn Kemp during his entire career, and looking at Blake thru a 3 year window that just started...

Your posts don't make sense. You called Griffin a phony big man and then said he is the modern Shawn Kemp. Then when people defended Kemp you said Kemp was amazing and that Griffin is his closest contemporary.

So if Kemp was amazing (he was) how does a phony compare to him?

Somewhere your logic chain has a broken link.

Yes...agreed...What i really meant to say is that Griffin in terms of athletic/dunking prowess is closest to a Shawn Kemp... but as a big man with skill he is a phony...players like Randolph and Gasol destroyed him...

    But yes...my logic was flawed...sorry...

Griffin is generally underrated on here. He's quite a good player. His quickness gives him the ability to make some nice moves.

But both Horford and Josh Smith are on a similar level to Griffin. Jordan is so much worse it's not even a conversation.

Griffin was on his way until DD cursed his ass. Now he's bound for failure.

All Griffin/Jordan do is dunk. Smith is noted as one of the best perimeter and help-side defenders in the league, but gets a lot of deserved hate for jacking up ill-advised 20 footers. We call him Osh over on the Hawk forums because he has no J. lol As for Horford, he was a top 3 center in 2012-13 according to the stats and is a grid shooter. Biggest gripe about Horford is FT% and tendency to be soft in the post. Also, Smith/Horford have great chemistry. I may be bias, but Horford/Smith is WAY better than Griffin/Jordan.
