I just don't wanna deal with the "Bandwagon fan" label if it does happen. For example Heat fans are widely considered bandwagon fans no matter how long they've been rooting for the team.

I agree with you that the Rockets didn't tank to build our Championship teams, but I disagree with you about those late 80's and early 90's teams. In the late 80's/early 90's the Rockets had a talented core of players. Thorpe joined before the 88-89 season so he was here during that entire period. I also thought Sleepy Floyd did a solid job at point guard until Smith replaced him in the starting lineup in 1990. And the Rockets during that time were not a bad team, but I think they did under-perform at times. They never were a below .500 team during this time. The end of the bench was weak, but that is normal for all teams.

    Disagree, for many reasons.

In the 90's the NBA was my #1 league. Now it's anywhere from #2-#4 depending on the season. And I'm not talking about whether my favorite team is doing well, I'm talking about the watchability of the league itself, and the personalities within.

Still no guarantee Rockets will win even with Howard, Harden and CP3.

Not exactly. If we had a completely different line up from the year before, than yes. I could live if we have 2 veteran Rocket players, but if we just straight up traded for the Miami line-up, I wouldn't be so excited.

Apologies, my statement was meant to be very high level. Obviously the entire '94/'95 teams weren't built through tanking, and although it can be argued that we were able to draft Akeem, the centerpiece of those championships, in the '80s by tanking, who knows how he would have developed elsewhere.

I was simply trying to stress that Morey has had obstacle after obstacle thrown his way, and still opted not to tank (well Les opted not to), yet we are in a perfect position to, at the very least, have a Big 2.5. The easy way wasn't taken, we had to earn every player & asset we have, and we should be proud of that. Sorry for using a very bad basis to make my point.

It would feel awesome if the Rockets won a championship regardless of whether they did it via free agency acquisitions or the old fashion way.

With that said one must acknowledge that it would be a slightly different feeling winning it with a group that had only been here 1 year and were all newly acquired versus winning it with a team that consisted of guys like Yao and Scola who had been here for years giving their sweat and tears for this team.

Not in the slightest. That's the entire goal of a GM: Put together the best team you can possibly field with the money you're allowed.

Even then, there's no guarantee that a 3-superstar team will win it all. It just makes your chances better.

As long as they don't have some stupid arrogant party before the season begins and guarantee that they'll win several titles in a row, I think I'd be ok with it.

Lets put it this way. It beats the hell out of drafting the 14th pick for 3 straight years.

I'm sure it would feel amazing either way, but if it was with homegrown players it would make it just that much sweeter.

Devil's advocate: What if the rockets got dwight howard from free agency, chris paul and eric bledsoe in a sign and trade for parsons and asik. Let's say that team won the championship. Do you really think it wouldn't feel better to have won the championship without all those first year rockets friends?

I for one do not have to acknowledge that. I care about the Rockets, not Yao and all his playoff losses, or Scola and all the 14th picks he brought us.

I'd much rather be rooting for a title contender with championship caliber players, than rooting for a team with no hope like the last 15 years.

I used to think every dude driving a Lamborghini was an egotistical douchebag... until I bought one myself.
Ok, I don't have one, and I still think they're douches, but u get the picture.

The OP didn't say it wouldn't be good. He said, would it be NOT AS good.

In all sports, it's always sweeter to win as an underdog. Almost all sport movies have a script like that. So it is pretty obvious to me that winning by gathering superior talents is not as impressive as winning by beating the Goliath of the world. That's just human nature.

...but the question wasn't whether you would prefer a title contender, or a team with no hope. I would have thought that was obvious.

What he asked was whether or not it would feel better to win it all with an entirely new team, or to win it all with long time Rockets. In the latter scenario, it would be "Yao and all his playoff losses before winning it all, or Scola and the championship he brought us."

I get the feeling that people who don't care either way have more interest in the social trash talk aspect of having a winner, rather than those of us who would admittedly enjoy it more with "home grown" Rockets. Getting another star is a must. That's clear. Our team is already a new group, so doing it with career Houstonians isn't really an option anyway. In the end, I'll take it any way we can get it.

yeah but I think there is a huge difference when players participate in a g*ngbang in their 30s and not 20s. Guys just want the easy way out because the talking heads keep calling them chokers. Dream and christ where in their early 30s when they achieved greatness. It should take time.

The reason I no longer watch european soccer is because of inequality, where 3 teams sign all of the world's greatest players. It was fun when I was 15 years old or when playing video games.

    Miami changed the landscape.

If you want to win, then going the homegrown route is very difficult.

There are exceptions...Spurs, Thunder, Pacers...however none of them have (yet) shown they can beat Miami in a 7 game series.
