I didn't get that at all. I think he's trying to emphasize that people don't value the preservation of historical context as much as he feels they should. For Houstonians, it comes down to money. For the Taliban, their religion gets in the way of preserving the region's history. Either way, he didn't equate real estate developers with terrorists. He just used an emotionally charged example to show what we lose.

One of the best aspects of Houston is that it doesn't cling to tradition and culture. This leads to cheaper cost of living and more diversity.

Um, Houston city planners and the Tailiban work to achieve different results.

So you're saying the city of Houston's reason for demolishing buildings is in the name of our lord and savior

Because of the excellent port Houston and Galveston are older than most cities in the US -- Galveston of course does a better job of preserving it's history because it's so much smaller. Houston has been good recently attempting to keep landmarks, but it's difficult when you have no zoning in one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

The Taliban don't idolize these statues according to their claimed religion. They didn't dynamite it to make way for Starbucks or a new 30 screen multiplex. He's incorrectly trying to say if you tear down crap, you're a terrorist. He says some crazy things in the d&d.

Kind of hard to see it now, but in the 50's Galveston was one of the it places to visit in the USA.

Many years ago, I kept seeing this promo for some Lifetime movie about three friends, old geezers wanting to go to Galveston for some reason. I kept saying why the **** do they want to go to Galveston?

Yes - and they're the ones who get hit by a hurricane every so often, yet they are still better at preserving things.

So ignorance of history is good?

Not saying that at all, just trying to point out the similarities in the mindset towards ignorance of history.

From the 1920's to 1957, Galveston was a wide open resort city with gambling, prostitution and, during Prohibition, booze.

"One of the most opulent was the Balinese Room, which attracted top entertainers — including Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington and Bob Hope — to the ballroom, just a short walk through the swinging doors from the casino."

My parents used to go to the Balinese Room back in the day with their friends to dance and to gamble. By all accounts, it was pretty wild. The gambling tables could flip over and disappear into the floor, with a word from an informer of a raid, not that they happened very often.

And you seriously consider that a plus. With all due respect, have you considered therapy?

Clinging to the past is for old school Aggies. Burn down the past and move forward.

Pretty easy to preserve history when nobody is offering to pay you a ton of money to bulldoze it.

This is the rub right here. Very well said.

Galveston's tourism is its largest industry...and preserving history is part of that. That is not the case in Houston.

Winner! Nothing really goes on in Galveston so it's really easy to preserve things. Detroit is currently doing a good job of "preserving history" too. ;)

Has the OP ever driven around Galveston? Most of Galveston is a dump.
What great historic buildings/houses have been demolished in Houston?

QFT. What exactly is historic about Houston? When I think of cities with great histories, Houston would not pop into my mind. People come here to get a job and usually stick around for the cheap houses.
