Not gonna happen. The Nets aren't that stupid. Nor is any other team in the NBA. It will be many years (if ever) before Jason Kidd even gets a whiff of a head coaching job anywhere.
I wonder how Patrick Ewing and Brian Shaw would feel. (Although Shaw isn't a HOF player like Ewing). I wonder how Ewing felt after Jacque Vaughn got the Magic coaching job.
Kidd shouldn't get a head coaching job. He should start with an assistant job for a couple of years than look to move up.
Jason Kidd has emerged as the strong frontrunner to become the Brooklyn Nets head coach and could be hired before the end of the week, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Nets ownership has told league associates that it wants a "fresh face," as coach, and the hiring of Kidd would give them a star quality that comes with significant risk for a franchise with a mandate to complete for championships in the short term. Talks on a possible contract for Kidd are under way, sources said. Brooklyn general manager Billy King has an interview scheduled with Indiana Pacers associate head coach Brian Shaw on Wednesday, but it's unclear if that will still happen. Shaw is meeting with the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday, and that job is his priority, sources said. Kidd is working to construct a coaching staff, and possibilities include former Detroit Pistons and Nets head coach Lawrence Frank and Pistons assistant Roy Rogers. There's no one locked into place, sources said.
You guys think it's stupid to sign JKidd as a head coach but you're forgetting this is the Nets.. the same team that throws $$$ to put together a band aid playoff team to maybe win a 1st round series. The same thing who thinks Joe Johnson and Gerald Wallace are good ideas.
He did 'okay'. Made the playoffs a few times. Flamed out in the end(0-16 before getting fired in '09-'10).
Response Believe me Kidd will not announce his intention unless he thought there was a good shot he would get the coaching job.
To that I would say most guys that actually get hired don't announce any intention at all. They keep their mouths shut until the ink is dry. Just based off my (often faulty) memory, candidates that publicly go on the record realize they are longshots. That said, Kidd didn't announce anything.
Kidd will be a good coach right off the bat. He doesn't necessarily need to work under anyone first, unless it's someone like Popovich or Adelman, but will prolly benefit from hiring some good assistants.
As long as his top assistant is Lawrence Frank (or someone equally experienced), I think it will work out very well. Kidd is exactly the type of person players respect. He worked hard his whole career, good on both sides of the ball, creative, smart, and must've been smart to be able to extend his career even after his physical fitness was deteriorating. As far as coaching goes, the guy has played for so many coaches at so many levels, as well as assistants. Apparently he was acting as coach for much of his last season. If he recognizes his inexperience in the X's and O's department and trusts a former head coach as his assistant, then it will work well. That's how all great coaches work - they know how to delegate, find excellent staff even if it threatens their job, and trust them. This frees him to focus on creative solutions, managing egos and seeing the big picture. Good luck to him. I was surprised to hear he's the finalist, but once I saw he had identified Lawrence Frank as an assistant, it became obvious that he knew exactly what he's doing.
