End of next season (2014). They re-upped for another 2 years after last year, presumably because they couldn't get a team in the FSL or Carolina league.

I think they kept Lancaster over another more park-neutral Cali affiliate because of the hassle and plus Lancaster is a good organization business-wise.

With Tropeano being a fifth round pick (maybe not as polished as Mark) and Folty being a high schooler when drafted, Appel appears to be a different situation in my opinion.

He is. This was in response to not sending our top pitching prospects to Lancaster. They both went as some of our highest ranked prospects.

Jarred Cosart's erratic command bites him again. He retired 13 in a row entering the 6th while only issuing 1 walk, but he walked the bases loaded and Josh Zeid allowed all of them to score.

Cosart's getting closer and closer to ending up as an 8th or 9th inning bullpen guy.

I tend to agree, but personally I can't stand closer types that come in and can't throw strikes

George Springer just hit his 18th home run of the season, which puts Corpus up 4-3 in San Antonio in the 5th inning.

Got his 18th steal already as well. He should be the first 20/20 guy in all of pro baseball.

Cosart has had control problems obviously, but for most of the season his results have been good. I'm sure the Astros are gonna give him an extended look as a starter in Houston before moving him to the bullpen.

I've never understood the need to get 7 innings out of a starter. Obviously it's preferred, but if you can consistenly get 5 great innings out of a guy I'll take that. Most fifth starters usually suck and don't go that deep to begin with.

Now don't get me wrong you can't have a rotation full of them, but how much does forcing the pen to work 2 extra innings every fifth day really hurt you. I actually wouldn't mind using a tandem system for one spot in the rotation if you have 2 guys like that. Most pens have 1 or 2 guys that don't get much work anyhow, may as well get some use out of that roster spot.

I just think baseball is so narrow minded in it's use of pitchers and their "roles" sometimes.

What if his control problems arise in the first inning as opposed to the 6th though?
If he has control problems, I am not so sure it is a given that he can give you five solid innings.

Absolutely vital to get 6 innings out of your starter on a regular basis. Bullpen pitchers are usually at their best on 2 days rest. Throw in extra inning games, and it is difficult to give your bullpen adequate rest if you got guys going only 5 innings. That also means more time for lesser pitchers. Even if you think back to when we had good bullpens, we generally had 3 pitchers you could trust.

The tandem style for the 5th spot would be intriguing though. Even now, I wouldn't complain about a Clemens/Cisnero pairing and see what they can do.

This is mainly in regards to Cosart. He seems to routinely work a high pitch count so he doesn't go deep, but he's usually very effective through 5.

I completely agree on that at least 3 of your starters need to go deep, preferably 4 or it won't work, but five inning guy or two won't hurt you if the rest of the rotation is up to snuff. Even on most good teams the 5th starter isn't exactly a reliable workhorse so what are you replacing.

An average bullpen guy usually has a better ERA than most fifth starters, so for 2 innings he isn't really a lesser pitcher.

Yeah. I don't like it when the system gets swept.

Well then... on to tonight's action.

OKC welcomes the Iowa Cubs for 4 starting at 7:05. Phil Humber will be taking on Yoanner Negrin.

Corpus Christi continues their series against San Antonio, also at 7:05. Jorge De Leon was scheduled to start, but he's on bereavement leave. He's expected to rejoin the team tomorrow. R.J. Alaniz will be one of the starters, and I assume Matt Heidenreich will make a spot start. San Antonio will bring out Matt Wisler.

After getting swept on their roadtrip, Lancaster will return home as they host High Desert for 3 beginning at 7:00 Pacific. Tonight's pairing will be David Rollins and Tyson Perez. High Desert's starter is TBA. The Jethawks will be looking to snap a 7-game losing streak.

Quad Cities will look to avoid getting swept in Peoria at 7:00. Jamaine Cotton and Vince Velasquez will take on Hector Hernandez. A loss results in the River Bandits and Chiefs flip-flopping in the standings. QC would drop to 4th with a loss, as their playoff hopes are dimming.

    Monday Stories

    Swept. Again.

Depressing, ain't it? Seems like the system's hit a rough patch performance-wise.

    Recap

    Iowa 7, Oklahoma City 6

With the loss, the Redhawks relinquished the division lead to Round Rock.

Marc Krauss went 3-4 with a solo homer (9) in the 2nd that put OKC on the board, down 3-1, and he also hit an RBI single that made it a 1-run game in the 9th. He was lifted for Che-Hsuan Lin... who got caught stealing 2nd to end the game.

Jose Martinez's only hit of the evening was an RBI single in the 2nd. Jonathan Villar then hit a 2-run homer (5) in the 3rd that put OKC up 4-3 at that point. Robbie Grossman entered the game with 3 extra-base hits all season with the Redhawks. He finished 3-4 with 2 doubles, a triple, and he also stole home (6; 8 season) in the 4th. Brett Wallace and Brandon Laird had 2 hits apiece.

Philip Humber went 4 2/3 innings and allowed 6 runs (1 inherited) on 8 hits (2 solo homers to Brad Nelson), walked 3, and struck out 3. Science Guy allowed 1 of Humber's runners to score, but didn't allow any of his own in 1 1/3 innings. He allowed 2 hits and struck out 1. Jason Stoffel went 1 1/3 and allowed a run (inherited), walked 1, and struck out 2. Alex Sogard allowed an RBI single in the 8th that allowed Stoffel's runner to score. He didn't allow any of his own and struck out 1. Josh Zeid retired Donnie Murphy and Junior Lake to end the 9th.

The Redhawks and Cubs are currently in progress. Asher Wojciechowski is on the mound and his opponent is Guillermo Moscoso. After Brett Jackson hit a solo homer in the 1st, Brett Wallace has responded with a 2-run homer (9) n the bottom half of the inning. OKC leads 2-1 as they head into the bottom of the 2nd.

San Antonio 10, Corpus Christi 4

Don't look now, but #cchooks lead over Frisco is down to 1 w/7 games left in 1st half. Look, I know developing talent takes precedent over wins and losses in the minors, but that talent's got to win too.

Well, Jonathan Meyer extended his hit streak to 14 games with a 2-run homer (6) in the 6th. Jonathan Singleton went 3-4 with a double and an RBI single in the 3rd. He also scored on an error in the 7th. On that play, Domingo Santana was credited with an infield single.

R.J. Alaniz was torched for 6 runs (2 inherited) on 6 hits in only 1 1/3 innings. He walked 1. Matt Heidenreich was the first man out of the bullpen, and he gave up 2 runs on 5 hits (3-run homer, which allowed both of the runners he inherited from Alaniz to score) in 2 2/3 innings. Andrew Robinson went 2 innings and allowed an unearned run on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Gonzalo Sanudo, making his season debut, allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out 1 in 1 2/3 innings. Pat Urckfitz got Everett Williams to ground out in the 8th.

With that big Frisco series looming, the Hooks will try to earn a split with the Missions. Mike Foltynewicz makes his return to San Antonio. He and David Martinez will take on Donn Roach at 7:05.

    High Desert 8, Lancaster 3

That's 8 straight losses for the Jethawks. They've hit the wall hard.

The Mavericks blasted David Rollins for 7 runs in the 2nd; it turned out to be all they needed. Rollins couldn't retire any of the 7 batters he faced in the inning. He went 1+ inning and allowed almost everything, really. 7 runs (2 inherited) on 5 hits (2 solo homers and a 3-run shot). He also walked 2 and struck out 1. Jonas Dufek went 1 1/3 and allowed one run of his own on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Tom Shirley pitched 2 2/3 perfect innings, striking out 3. And Tyson Perez finished out the game with 4 scoreless. He allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4.

The Jethawks offense got solo homers from Nolan Fontana (5) in the 4th and Matt Duffy (11) in the 8th. Delino DeShields hit a sac fly in the bottom of the 9th. Chris Epps went 3-4 with a double and a run scored.

Luis Cruz and... I forget who his partner is, will be tonight's pairing. High Desert's starter is TBA. First pitch is at 7:00 Pacific.

    Peoria 5, Quad Cities 1

The River Bandits' hopes of getting that 1st-half wild card playoff spot are fading fast. Carlos Correa's RBI groundout in the 7th was the lone run. Correa finished 2-5. Ruben Sosa, who scored on the play, went 2-3 with 2 steals (5). Roberto Peña's double was the only extra-base hit for QC.

Jamaine Cotton went 5 innings, but he allowed everything: 5 runs on 8 hits, and he walked 2 and fanned 2. Vince Velasquez tossed 2 scoreless, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2. Mitch Lambson worked around a hit to retire the side in the 8th, striking out 1.

Quad Cities will basically have to win out to get that playoff spot, and they'll also need quite a bit of help along the way too. They'll welcome Cedar Rapids to town for a 3 game series beginning tonight at 7:00. Lance McCullers and Dan Minor will start the opener. Their opponent will be Hein Robb.

DSL Astros leading DSL Dodgers 4-0

Before the game was suspended after 3 innings. The Academy only had 1 hit; that 1 hit was a 2-run homer from Hector Roa (2) in the 1st. In the 3rd, Jarico Reynoso stole home (as part of a double steal with Luis Payano) and Payano later scored on an error. Payano's only hitting .174 through the first 7 games, but he's also drawn 8 walks.

Edwin Villarroel pitched all 3 innings, and he allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 2.

The Academy is hosting the Rays. Currently in progress.
