I went to Galveston this morning, went to a few museums: Flight Museum, Railroad Museum, Seaport Museum. What came to mind is that Galvestonians seem to take much more pride in their history in comparison to houston. Here most notable buildings get torn down: Shamrock Hotel, Majestic Theater, Prudential Building, possibly astrodome. It's sad that most things here get demolished and mostly become parking lots.

No. They're just very resistant to change. Plus they don't worry about the demolition of old buildings, hurricanes do that for them.

Couldn't this have been added to your my dreams of Houston thread?

    And on the Gtown topic...

I think Gtown was a way cooler city way back then Houston was.

Also a lot of Gtown people stay in Gtown for generations, whereas Houston is filled with transplants.

because Houston is focused on the future and Galveston is dependent on tourism

That's not an excuse. Demolishing historic buildings in houston is basically the same as the Taliban blowing up Buddha statues in Afghanistan, sad and ignorant.

Houston is probably the largest city in America, possibly the Western World, without zoning, and it is a travesty. I've watched the city since the 1950's, and have seen one thing after another representing Houston's heritage bulldozed, with always the same excuse. "It's good for business." Bull ****.

Ya think? And that's saying something considering some of Galveston's historical landmarks have been destroyed more frequently than in Houston via hurricanes. As a result Galveston has a charm about it that can't be found elsewhere. You can find another Houston in Dallas, Atlanta, maybe Tampa, Oklahoma City, San Jose and the non-glitzy parts of LA.

Galveston still has it's old school charm because the island never became repopulated enough after the 1900 hurricane to tear down old buildings in the name of progress. Then the old money people just decided "screw it lets make them all historical buildings".

At this point the old money people run Galveston and any 'progress' is a challenge to their dominance of the island.

This is a big part of it. The population growth just isn't there. Galveston could hold millions if it were hyper-developed like New York and it's currently at around 47k. There's just no need to bulldoze old structures.

I did live in Galveston for almost 10 years, and I can say that islanders have a sense of historical pride in their town. I miss it. It's too bad the ISD can't compare to suburban ISDs.

I've been here a while and I've seen lots of good things, and many many many stupid things, but that right there is dumb.

The Taliban did that because they don't believe in religious statues and what not, it's not like they wanted to put in a new HEB or Walmart.

He's basically saying, if you want to tear a building down, you're a terrorist.
