John Denney or Cavan Biggio will be the Rio Ruiz pick of the year if Astros are saving bonus pool money
Mike Rosenbaum was high on him too. Legit 4 pitch guy with great mechanics. Plus fastball & change w/ above average curve & slider. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...ect-profile-for-houston-astros-2nd-round-pick Not quite the value that McCullers was at nearly the same spot, but still sounds like a potential mid rotation innings eater.
Best available, according to Baseball America's Top 500 list: Highly doubt the Astros will go for 3 pitchers in a row, but I hope they pick Jake Brentz. Lefty, low-mileage arm, touches 97... I like. 25. Jon Denney, C, Yukon HS, Yukon, Oklahoma 34. Connor Jones, RHP, Great Bridge HS, Chesapeake, Virginia; has an ironclad commitment to Virginia, informed all 30 teams of his decision in writing 35. Kyle Serrano, RHP, Farragut HS, Farragut, Tennessee; Looks like he'll play for dad in college. His father, Dave, is the head coach at Tennessee:

Well it's been a long night but Im happy to say @serranok34 is going to be a Vol. His dream will happen in 3 years. Bobby Wahl, RHP, Ole Miss (JR) 42. Cord Sandberg, OF, Manatee HS, Bradenton, Florida; nephew of Ryne, he's also committed to play QB at Mississippi State 48. Rowdy Tellez, Ryan Boldt, and Cord Sandberg were all guys hyped as impact HS players coming into the draft.
At worst he never makes the majors. I'm not high on guys that don't have big strikeout numbers in college.
Plenty of Ironclad commitments have been broken. Josh Bell anyone? Just much harder to do now, as I don't see anyone offering more than $2M to anybody left (or even being able to).
The nice thing with having the first pick every round is the Astros have the entire morning to talk to advisors to see who will sign for what at 3.1. Probably not unlike the process they used yesterday for 1.1. After going with two polished college rhps, I'd like to see them balance their draft with an overslot prep hitter like Jon Denney (c) or Ryan Boldt (of). While I doubt Appel is signing for full slot, even if he is, remember they still can spend 5% (~675,000) over their total draft budget of 11.6 million without incurring severe penalties. That means, if they want to, they could spend about 1.5 million at 3.1 and still go slot the rest of the way. If Appel agreed to something in the range of a 6-7 million deal, then they should have a lot of money to play around with today.
Best available 1. Kyle Serrano, RHP | Farragut (Tenn.) HS 2. Jon Denney, C | Yukon (Okla.) HS 3. Connor Jones, RHP | Great Bridge HS (Chesapeake, Va.) 4. Andrew Mitchell, RHP | TCU 5. Wil Crowe, RHP | Pigeon Forge (Tenn.) HS 6. Ryan Boldt, OF | Red Wing (Minn.) HS 7. Jacob Brentz, LHP | Parkway South HS (Manchester, Mo.) 8. Garrett Williams, LHP | Calvary Baptist HS (Shreveport, La.) 9. Cord Sandberg, OF | Manatee HS (Bradenton, Fla.) 10. Dustin Driver, RHP | Wenatchee (Wash.) HS Most of these players slid on signability concerns; Jones explicitly told scouts he would not sign and was going to Virginia, while Brentz was reportedly looking for a big bonus to buy him out of Missouri. Mitchell has worked as a starter but too many teams may view him as a reliever, and he was under-scouted early in the spring when he was a little-used piece in TCU's bullpen. There were also some injury issues that caused a couple of these guys to fall. There are serious concerns about Crowe's medicals, as he has had ACL issues in both knees, while Boldt missed much of the season with minor knee injuries. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of these guys, especially Crowe, Sandberg and Driver, go early on Friday with deals cut overnight or in the morning.
91 ks in 100 innings is not bad numbers paired with just 19 walks. Four polished pitches he can command for strikes..just needs to learn how to mix it up better comes with better coaching and a better game calling catcher.
I challenge you to find me a list of current ML pitchers with decent careers that averaged less than a strikeout per inning in their last year of college. Lets just say it is incredibly rare. Probably the best is Bud Norris, who had just converted from reliever (where he did average more than a k/IP to a starter).
I have a co-worker who's neice is a softball pitcher (or more accurately, was). She's had at least 3 ACL tears from pitching in HS. Different sport, but I think the plant leg would still be at risk. Luckily for her she can also hit, so she'll still has her scholarship offers.
much different motion, obviously, and she's using her knee to push off the rubber, rather than a raised mound...i'd be curious to know if it's even her plant leg that was injured. acl injuries to baseball pitchers (from pitching) are extremely rare. the fact that crowe tore his from hoops would alleviate any concern in my mind (yes i realize i'm not dr. james andrews), assuming his form and ability were getting back on track.
She's torn them in both knees. I never noticed their mound wasn't raised. I didn't realize it was such a common softball injury.
Probably not, just an example of players suffering tears in the same ACL. If a baseball player tore it during his pitching motion, it stands to reason doing that 100+ times a game for 30+ starts a season might result in the same injury.
