Assuming that we signed Howard with cap space then we would only have the room exception ($2.5M) and then the rest would have to be minimum salary.

"Vegas" as an entity only reflects what betters are currently placing. There is no inside info, it is simply a reflection of the national outlook. The last two weeks have been nothing but reports of Howard's interest in the Rockets, so people have been inclined to bet on the Rockets, shifting the odds.

I could be wrong, but from what I've gathered from similar posts lately is that the house always sets odds to win. Therefore, odds are shifted by the amount/value of bets being placed.

Maybe "national outlook" was a bad word choice, but we can't possibly believe that anyone in Vegas has anymore info that anyone else.

Odds do shift with regard to bettors, but Vegas has ridiculous inside info. If you've seen the lines they've placed over years and years they have crazy inside info and know exactly what they are doing. There's a reason they always win in the end.

Thanks for the info. One thing I am wondering: do you really have to reserve those 490k cap holds? I thought you are able to sign FA as long as you have cap space and then go over the cap to fill your roster.

I could really see Morey moving Lin and/or Asik to round out the roster some more. Perhaps getting one of the PFs (Millsap, Smith, someone like that) - and trying to get a second rounder this year that might actually play some.

Would we not have the Veteran Exception?

Thanks, too many new rules in the cba to get things straight at times.

    Lin, bev
    Harden
    Parsons
    Tjones, moti, white
    Dwight asik smith

Who could we use the room on that could back up harden and parsons or should we use it on a pf?. I'm assuming Garcia could sign for the vet minimum but that still leaves many holes in the roster. The last thing we want is harden or parsons to breakdown under heavy minutes.

Yes, we really have to reserve those cap holds.

I'm not sure what you are refering to by the "Veteran Exception"?

Do you mean the idea that for veterans of 10 years or more can be signed and the league pays part of the salary but only the part the team pays counts against the cap? If so, that is just a part of the Minimum Salary Exception.

All of the variations of Bird rights (Bird rights, non-Bird rights and early Bird Rights) are actually a component of something called the "Veteran Free Agent Exception" but people generally refer to the components (Bird, early-Bird, etc..) individually.

I think Garcia will get $3-4 million offers. Vet min guys are usually players well past their prime.

The best option for the Rockets is to trade Lin for cap room. Signing on 1 yr guaranteed contracts or trading for expiring contracts maintains the Rockets cap flexibility for 2014.

Harden, Howard, and LeBron may be unlikely, but isn't impossible.

We arent' trading Lin for cap room. The only way we trade Lin is if there are literally no other options, or we find an upgrade. I don't know why everyone keeps suggesting we trade him when Morey slobs on his knob every chance he gets.

Really too early to tell until we know how things play out.

First we have to acquire Howard. We will certainly need to waive, trade or use the stretch provision on some players in order to acquire Howard.

If we get Howard then the Rockets have to decide what they intend to do with Asik (assuming that he wasn't included in a SnT for Howard). If they decide to trade him then there will be a new player or two coming in.

Finally, we have to fill out the rest of the roster and hopefully plug as many holes as possible. That will be the last thing that gets done and there's too many variables to predict the outcome right now. We don't know who will be on the roster, what the market will be for individual players and what holes we will be trying to fill. Regardless, Morey is really good at finding low priced, undervalued players so I'm not really worried about filling out the roster.

One thing to keep in mind is that starting in 2013-14 teams have to spend a minimum of 90% of the cap. There's quite a few teams with cap space and everyone won't get a big name free agent. That means that some teams will end up needing to sign players in order to get to the minimum team salary (90% of cap). I'm sure teams will offer some appealing 1 year deals (ala Dallas last year) in order to retain their cap space for the FA class of '14. That might mean that some players who otherwise would have signed for the minimum with us may get better deals from the teams trying to get to the minimum team salary.

Vegas doesn't set lines based necessarily on what will happen. Those lines are crafted to make Vegas money, not predict actual outcomes. This is why lines move.

While true, this isn't nearly as relevant or interesting as people seem to think it is. However Vegas' lines get established, they are extremely predictive on average. VERY few people can beat sports odds over the long term and most of the ones you're heard about who say they do are lying. The minuscule fraction that do scour the lines looking for the handful that are mispriced.
