As I noted in my post, I'm not advocating making that trade or not making that trade. I just didn't want anyone to read that and think that you always had to match salaries.

You have to look at both sides of the trade and see if they work. From LA's perspective, you are always allowed to take back less salary so it is legal for them. From Houston's perspective they can cover the difference in salary with cap space so the 150% rule doesn't apply and the trade is legal for them (Since they'd still be under the cap after the trade).

Look at Miami's acquisition of Chris Bosh. That ended up being a sign and trade with Toronto. Miami brought in Bosh's $15M+ salary and only sent out two draft picks ($0 for trade purposes). Even though the salaries didn't match it was legal because Miami could cover the additional salary with their cap space.

Here's Larry Coon's explanation of using cap space to cover the additional salary:

As described in question number 80, a team below the cap may disregard salaries when making trades, as long as the team finishes no more than $100,000 above the cap as the result of a trade

Assuming we get rid of Brooks, Anderson, Delfino, Olbrecht and Greg Smith...

    Starting line-up of
    Lin-Harden-Parsons-Howard-Asik

    Bench of
    Beverley-Garcia-Jones-Motiejunas

    Reserves
    Aldemir-2nd RD Pick-Royce White (??)

Any chance we can sign a veteran guard like Rip on the cheap?

That is perfectly correct in the team's wish. But as a player, as a superstar player, you want to play as much as you could to help the team win. It's up to the coaches to monitor his minutes. I never heard of any superstar stating that he wants to play less minute.

Understood but he would never play for that team. They would immediately waive him. It gets done all of the time and has nothing to do with his disorder.

Brooks makes the same amount of money as the room exception and is more well regarded than Garcia. Delfino is also more well regarded and makes only slightly more than the room exception.

Aldemir should be collecting DNPs considering he'll be behind like 5 bigs plus small ball forwards.

Not really. The Rockets will be able to move Robinson, it's just a matter of what they can get in return. Even is they couldn't they could get really close to a full max amount by getting rid of Smith and using the stretch provision on both White and Robinson. If we were a few hundred thousand short I don't think it's a deal breaker. We wouldn't have to do a SnT.

The SnT could benefit both sides though . Let's say the Rockets won't include Asik and that LA wants Lin (both assumptions on my part).

A SnT of Lin for Howard gets Howard full max money, the Rockets get to keep Robinson and Smith and the Rockets end up with a little cap room left over to go FA shopping for role players. LA would get an asset (that they presumably liked) and a $12M trade exception that they could use to acquire another player at a later date.

Depending on the Lakers future plans that could be an advantageous deal for them. Of course, if they're solely trying to maximize 2014 cap space then they won't take on any non-expiring deals.

Thanks for the info guys! Glad to hear Garcia willing to take less and Dwight possibly be a Rocket. Interesting about Lin, wouldn't mind if he leaves. He's a great kid, humble, positive spirit, works hard and is hard on himself but for that championship you have to sacrifice. If that means trading him, that's it.

While Lin was starting to grow on me (he is young), the LOFs have not. I can sacrafice Lin for the fans.

    I am ArtV and I'm a LOFH.

Credit to Fair Dinkum and BimaThug

    01) Harden 13,668,750
    02) Asik 8,374,646
    03) Lin 8,374,646
    04) Robinson 3,526,440
    05) White 1,719,480
    06) Jones 1,551,840
    07) Motiejunas 1,422,720
    08) Parsons 926,500
    09) G.Smith 884,293
    10) Beverley 788,872
    11) Cap Hold 490,180
    12) Cap Hold 490,180
    *Honeycut 100,000
    Plus Dwight Howard 20,513,178

    Total = 62,831,725

    62,831,725 - 58,500,000 = 4,331,725

Trade White + $2.1 million + 2015 2nd rounder for a future heavily protected 2nd. Must go to a team with cap room or a non-guaranteed contract.

    Trade TRob for a protected 2014 1st or 2013 2nd.

    01) Harden 13,668,750
    02) Asik 8,374,646
    03) Lin 8,374,646
    04) Jones 1,551,840
    05) Motiejunas 1,422,720
    06) Parsons 926,500
    07) G.Smith 884,293
    08) Beverley 788,872
    09) Cap Hold 490,180
    10) Cap Hold 490,180
    11) Cap Hold 490,180
    12) Cap Hold 490,180
    *Honeycut 100,000

    $58,500,000 - $38,052,987 = $20,447,013 in cap room.

    $20,513,178 (dwight max) - $20,447,013 (cap room) = $66,165 short of max

I doubt $66k will make or break this, but if it does....

Greg Smith traded for a 2nd round pick or

    (IMO, more likely)

Jeremy Lin Traded. Open cap room is used to sign Furkan Aldemir to a 4 year "Parsons" contract. 2nd PG is signed out of free agency to a "Delfino" contract (ie 2nd year unguaranteed). Garcia is signed to a similar contract.

Wow, Parsons makes less than Royce White and Trob should exchange salary with Parsons to be fair.
#4,5, and to a lesser extent 6, 7, 9 should be traded. Hello Morey!

Let's hope that when all the numbers are in, the new cap is at least $58,566,166!

I'm also extremely skeptical that Howard nixes this plan just because he would make $60k less out of his $20.5M contract lol.

Look at it this way. He'll make that amount back easily many times over by playing additional playoff games with the Rockets over the next few years compared to the Lakers.

What exception are we allowed to use once we max Dwight out and are stuck at the cap? 5 or 3 mill?
