Just finished Winter of the World by Ken Follet (book 2 of his century trilogy). Currently reading The Vatican Diaries and listening to Inferno (Dan Brown).
Finished Ready Player One. I know there's a separate thread on it, but I felt it also deserved a place here, for others that might overlook the other thread. Good book. 4/5 stars. Starts off and finishes great; just seems to lag a bit in the middle. I wonder how they'll make the movie version.
The same author that wrote those two books just released another book, And the Mountains Echoed. If you liked those two then you might like this one as well.
Recently read The Poet by Michael Connely. It was pretty entertaining and had good twists. I'll have to read more of his stuff soon. Thanks for the rec. I couldn't find The Black Echo so I just picked up The Poet instead. I'll make sure to read the series you mentioned.
Yep, it sure did. It was cheap and sounded relatively interesting....and was for the most part. Some good detail on early forensic practices and ancient Chinese culture, but the main character was kinda stupid at times. I would rate it about 5/10.
Just finished The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It was pretty good. I liked it. It wasn't perfect, but there was plenty in there to relate to, and it does a good job of making serious things not be melodramatic which is hard to do.
How is Winter of the World? I haven't read either book yet, but am curious. I did read "The Winds of War", and "War and Remembrance" by Herman Wouk years ago. Is it something like that?
I enjoyed both books and there will be one more. They are the "sweeping" kind of novels that encompass different characters from different countries whose stories will intertwine. Did you read Pillar of the Earth and World Without End? If you did and enjoyed them, you should like this series.
My cousin bet me I could not read the entire Wheel of Time series...he gave me two years to do it (one book every 53 days) and gave me all 14 books for xmas. He said I would lose interest once I got halfway through and never complete the series. For every book I don't read, I pay him $100. For every book I do, he pays me $100. If I read 7 as he expects, we break even. I just started Book 4....I'm behind the pace to win, way ahead to tie....and I really regret this bet. I have two kids and a career. I basically read on the train to work.. or on business trips.
8/10 I enjoyed this complicated, yet slow portrayal of how evil sort of creeps up on you. Very dark, depraved, and depressing by the end. If you're in the mood to read something dystopian, get this. Amazon link
LOL, that seems like a pretty sweet deal regardless. Have started reading the series because of my brothers constant talk about how he really liked it so I figured what the hell. Now I'm stuck in 14 books plus will have to read New Spring because I'm weird and won't feel like I truly finished unless I read them all. Started reading a couple of months ago but have been switching from Wheel of Time to The Game of Thrones series, Steven King's The Stand Uncut version, and random books. Also would highly recommended to anybody that hasn't read The Stand that it is really good and easily one of my top 5 books. I picked it up without knowing anything about and figured I would get the Uncut version a shot and honestly hated it in the beginning. I was reading all these small characters stories and with all the stories spread out all across the US I had no idea where it was going. It honestly took about 180 pages for it to start clicking with everything and after that I couldn't put it down. Figured I have A Storm of Swords, Dragon Reborn, Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee(re-reading so that I never forget what evil humans are capable of), then I'm guessing maybe King's IT. Anybody into Steven King's body of work? Trying to figure out what other books to read by him. Started reading The Dark Tower right after I read The Stand but couldn't get into so I put it down for later.
