I watched Penitentiaryin downtown Houston in the early 80’s. Close this thread. :/ ....... Majestic Theater.
I someday hope to have a badass media room so that I don't have to go to theaters anymore. People get furious if you politely ask them to stop texting during a movie, and I just don't get why. Cinemark in Memorial was indeed bad. We would prefer to go to the Marquee IMAX theater. Since I've moved to NW Houston I have only been to the AMC in Willowbrook ($50 gift card), and though the theater itself is crap, the attendees haven't been that bad, with the exception of an Hispanic man who talked all the way through Iron Man 3 even after I asked him to stop. My fiance and I only sit in the very back row now because I got tired of her complaining about people who kick her seat. It's actually improved our movie going experience quite a bit.
One of you guys should open a "no blacks" theater. Sounds like there might be a lot of interest in it.
i remember the whining baby during my The Dark Knight returns viewing. it went on for a good 5 minutes before i finally gave the obligatory "shh". the parents didn't get the hint. the kid continued to talk and we had to shh him again. finally the clueless mom took the runt outside. it was a white couple.
We probably pass each other a lot then. That's the ONLY place I'll go and I'm a big fan of a 5PM movie then dinner/drinks afterwards. I've not had one experience like the ones I'm reading here at the Sundance.
Studio Movie Grill (well the Granada before they were bought out) was the one saving grace of moving up to Dallas after college in 99. It's the only places I'll watch movies at night. Typically we'll go to the earliest showing Saturday morning to avoid as much of the crowds as possible.
Back when they had Drive In theatres, my first job was at the McLendon Triple on South Main. There were some rowdy crowds there. One night while my friend and I were on break, we went outside and sat on the sidewalk to watch the movie. There was this guy who was with about 4 or 5 other guys who was sitting on top of the roof of his car watching the movie. The car in the row directly behind him with a car load of guys kept yelling for him to move so they could see the screen. The guy wouldn't budge. Someone from another car walked over and appeared to ask the guy to move. I figured all the yelling was distracting them from being able to hear the movie. The guy still wouldn't budge...well until one of the guys behind him found a piece of concrete that broke off the base of the pole that the speakers hung on. The guy threw the concrete right through the back window of the car. **** WAS ON!!! All the guys from both cars starting chunking rocks back and forth with some of the rocks hitting other cars. Then fistfighting broke out to the point there was about 100 people fighting. I saw some poor dude carrying a tray of food back to his family get hit in the face Rudy T style. There was an Officer who worked security there who was really cool. His name was Payton. Big ass older black dude probably 6-6 and 280 nothing but muscle. We went to get him like he could somehow stop the mayhem. Payton said...."Look I called for some help, they are on the way. Until they get here I'm gonna stand here with you guys and observe." He just took out a notebook and started writing down notes (like who was involved, license plates, etc...). He asked us how it started and who was in it. We really knew he was watching out for our dumb asses too. Next thing we knew, the Cops were closing the exits and Helicopters were hovering overhead. I was 16 so to me that seemed exciting because it looked like something out of a western bar room brawl. These days, some a-hole would have started shooting. When the cops started rounding people up for all kinds of stuff (drinking, fighting, drugs, underaged drinking) that night. I remember Payton making us stay with him so we didn't get hassled by another cop. (The rest of our co-workers were inside the concession stand with the door locked). Payton was so cool with us back then. I remember he caught us smoking a joint one time. We thought we were busted. Payton just said "Don't let Jim (our boss) catch you." Payton's day job was to patrol the area near Herman Park I think. All of us that worked there loved Payton. Payton kept things in perspective. Payton knew he was a big dude but not big enough to kick 100 guys asses. He knew my friend and I were a skinny white guy and a skinny black guy who needed to keep both our asses on the porch (so to speak) and stay clear of the fight. He knew when he caught us smoking that we were a couple of good kids doing something most kids did at our ages. Payton coulda done something then but he saved it for one of his random talks he had with all the guys and girls who worked there. Payton always talked about right and wrong and consequences in a way that it didn't feel like he was preaching to us. Best Cop I have ever met then and still is today.
Can you imagine all the cool **** we would've had if it wasn't for this type of behavior?? Houston would be like the coolest city ever, not that it already is but still.....
Honestly, I would goto that theater. Most of the theaters in NYC attract riff raff, even with $13 prices
Drive In Theatres were cool. You could bring in some beer, reefer, bang your chick and watch a movie all in the confines of your car. Well....maybe that behavior contributed to the demise too....but what the heck. Even going to the beach back in the day was fun. I remember 5 chicks walking down the beach topless at Stewart Beach one day. Of course they had a crowd of guys following them. My friend had brought his piece of **** Honda 125 (i think) so I decide to drive this over and impress the chicks (i'm 17). So this one chick with enormous and extremely nice t*** leans over the handle bar and says "Come back when you get a Harley"...... Buzz Kill.
Dude the Majestic Metro was a dump in the early 80's, but I didn't care that's where I would get my martial arts fix! They would show a lot of Chinese Kung-fu movies at that time. That's where I found out there was a "Black Bruce Lee".... Jim "The Dragon" Kelly! He was one bad mofo!!.. Spoiler ....... ....... .......
This is what I thought of: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/c8UOEmxzXRY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Was that the theatre on OST near Cullen? If so, that was one rough neighborhood back in the day. Dexter Manley of the Redskins got busted at a crack ho hotel a little ways from there. I used to work down the street on OST near Fannin.
I can't stand parents who have kids that they can't control and bring them to the movies. This past weekend this couple brought around 5-6 of their kids into Fast and Furious which were all around the ages of 2-6. They were running up the stairs, yelling, and just being loud in general. Chloroform them or stay at home until they are old enough to go.
