How? 2nd round picks work better because of the timing of when we sign them as well (can be done later than 1st round picks). With the cap at $58.5M, we can barely get Howard in without already moving White/Smith and TRob. 1st round pick would only work out for us if we simultaneously move Asik for something, which I cannot see Morey doing just to accommodate for some guaranteed money pick in the first round in a weak draft.

No, low first round pick in NEXT yr's draft maybe.

TRob for Mirotic straight up. Perfect trade for the Rockets. Rockets wipe out TRobs salary, Mirotic doesn't count against the cap and he can be brought over in the future. Only way I see Chicago doing it is if they can shed some salary through another trade.

We could do TRob for the Bobcats pick traded to the Bulls (protected top 10 in 2014, 8 in 2015, and unprotected in 2016. The Rockets could then send the 34th and 49th pick + Hinrich to a team willing to take on his last year. I am sure a few teams could use him as a backup PG.

Bulls fans act like Mirotic is the second coming of Jesus, so I'm not sure how realistic it is for the hard-capped Bulls to accept that deal.

Forget the Bulls taking on Robinson. They can't take on the salary. They also don't need him. Gibson is the future at the 4 and they still have Boozer. If they manage to unload Boozer or cave in and amnesty him (which I don't see them doing), then maybe they'd be interested. But I think they'd prefer a proven veteran for similar cost.

I definitely don't see him unloading Mirotic for him. Robinson's value, whether deserved or undeserved, has taken a big hit since this season started.

Ok. Here's one example. But there are many possibilities.

Philly agrees to trade us #11 and #35 for TRob, TJones, Royce White, $2 million in cash, our 2014 first rounder and 2 future second rounders. So, here's how the deal goes down. On June 30th Philly picks who we tell them to pick at #11. (Remember trade is already agreed to, just hasn't been executed.) On June 30th we buy a future second rounder from Philly for $2 million in cash. Then sometimes after Dwight decides to sign here, we trade TRob, RWhite and 1 of our future second rounders to Philly for.....NOTHING but cap space!!!! (Yeah, that's legal. Teams do it all the time!) Then we sign Dwight into our cap space. Wala. THEN.........we trade our 2014 first rounder and a second rounder to Philly for their 2013 first round pick that we had them pick for us.

The key is unsigned draft picks have no value in trade. See http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q85

So, you can trade a player that is already drafted and not signed for no outgoing salary. Hence we can trade our future pick for a player that has already been drafted, even if we do not have the cap room.

Well, first of all, all Morey's moves come out of nowhere and afterward everybody's going, how did he manage that? In total shock because they never considered the full range of possibilities. All I'm doing is considering the full range of possibilities and the tendacy of Morey to use the CBA to his advantage and to break a transaction(2) into multiple smaller transactions that are then synergized together....the sum of which yields more than the moves do individually if not executed with the right timing.

lol you and your multi-step, verbal agreement, many moving-parts/slightly outlandish trade scenarios. Occam's Razor should be applied to hypo trade scenarios, I swear haha. Everything is possible. I could probably think of elaborate ways that all 30 teams could acquire D12 or whoever. Doesn't mean they somehow now happen. The more moving parts, the more likely something does not work out -- and the more unnecessary it is for an actor to do it in the first place. Why would we do all this again just to get the #11 in a weak draft, and give out our other young assets?

At this point his trade value is negative. He's not really worth his salary.

Bulls can take on TRob with their Korver TPE. And they could send us back RIP. That would work straight up.

However I don't think Morey will settle for that. Would have to probably involve something like TRob/RWhite and cash for RIP and their first rounder.

    1. Because the #11 pick in this draft is better than just giving out our other young assets for nothing.

    2. Because if we get Dwight while retaining Asik there simply won't be room for more than one of TRob/DMO/TJones and there isn't room for RWhite now.

    3. Because we gotta clear cap to sign Dwight if we are going to sign him outright.

    4. Because something like this could possibly morph into something even bigger.

    5. Because this is the way Morey does things. He massages and gets agreements on smaller transactions before they occur and then he synergizes them at the right time into bigger transactions and then he breaks them down into smaller transactions again and then resynergizes them again to get more out of the transactions.

You laugh all you want. You keep coming up with all these mundane acquisitions that waste asset value that Morey most likely WON'T do. I'll speculate on the possibilities most of which won't happen but the general idea of what I am speculating will take place in some form or fashion.

Reminder that the 1st round pick cap hold can be dismissed if you tell the league you will not sign the picked player for that NBA season. So if we trade TRob for a late 1st round euro stash then we wouldn't have a problem.

Bima just laid it out in the cap room thread. We will need to get rid of White and TRob, but we do not need to get rid of one of DMo or TJones, so that sort of debunks your numbers 1-3. The value of some of these musings escapes me -- why Morey would do some of them or why the other team would agree to do some of them, etc. That's fine of course, we just reasonably disagree on those things. And while I agree that Morey rarely does a simple straight up trade, I don't know if they are this convoluted either, or again, more importantly, this devoid of reason. If we did, hypothetically, need to also get rid of one of TJones or DMo, why wouldn't we just try to get a 2014 pick instead so as to avoid all these financial acrobatics?

Trying to get a 2014 pick is a perfectly reasonable strategy. However, most teams aren't going to want to deal their 2014 pick because the perception is that the 2014 draft is "loaded to the gills" and this 2013 draft is "void of superstar talent". So, in my opinion, it is going to be a lot easier to trade for a top 10 or top 11 pick in this draft then to trade for a pick possibly in the top 20 in next year's draft. The next possible factor is Morey knows talent. And if there is a talent in this draft that Morey deems has star to superstar potential and can be obtained with a pick between 6 and 12 then he may be able to dole out one of TJ/DMo along with the other assets and get that guy. Because that guy is in this draft and becomes available to actually get.

So trading for a 2014 pick is a viable strategy. But you're most likely going to have to overpay at this point in time. While trading for a 2013 pick, specifically a lottery pick, is probably undervalued. We've got a 2014 pick, will probably be in the low 20's. It's value is at a premium right now because of the unknown. I think Morey would have more of a tendency to trade the 2014 pick at a premium and pick up a 2013 pick on the cheap.

Same goes for DMO/TJones. If we get Dwight we simply won't have minutes to give both guys while retaining Asik. Dwight and Asik are going to get 60+ minutes at the big man spots, the 4 and 5. That leaves somewhere around 30 minutes for TJones, DMO, Parsons, and all the other small ball PFs to share. There's simply not enough minutes there for both guys to develop. So what is most likely going to happen is one of them makes the rotation and is highly effective (because they are playing off Harden/Dwight, etc.) and the other one languishes on the bench, in RGV, etc. Then at the end of next season the guy that didn't play, his trade value is in the dumper. Probably worth a 2nd rounder since he hasn't done anything and he's now going into his 3rd NBA season. The other guy will have decent trade value because his statistics look good playing off our superstars.

So why wouldn't you trade one of those two right now when their trade values will probably be the highest. Doesn't really matter which one right now. Both guys are going to be very improved next season and either guy that plays with the starters is going to look very good. So you trade the one now that brings you the most trade value. Trade back for another rookie in this draft. Then let the other guy percolate in the rotation and his trade value grow.

So that's some of my reasoning. Hope it helps you understand.

The idea of getting rid of White (1.7m) + $2m cash sounds great to us but may not be so appealing to other teams as it comes with a lot of extra baggage and roster spots and cap room are becoming extremely valuable commodities.

We may actually have to send out T-Jones (1.5) or D-Mo (1.6) if we can't off-load White.
