Sign CP3 and others to fill up the roster. 6. Sign Dwight under Bird Rights.
Dwight has a cap hold. The only way to clear his number from their books is to renounce their bird rights. They couldn't use cap space as if he wasn't on the team to go sign a bunch of players AND sign him.
Per Shamsports, Miami has a payroll of 84 millioin. I would say that puts them significantly over the apron.
To be fair, they actually only have a $75.5M GUARANTEED payroll. But ~$6M is in player options, so if all 3 players opt back in (Ray Allen, James Jones and Rashard Lewis), then they'd be at $81.5M. But yes, same conclusion.

justtxyank already covered the biggest issue -- Dwight's cap hold would still be there. But let's say somehow they not only managed to amnesty Kobe and trade Gasol, but also had the good fortune of Nash retiring or something unexpected like that. If the Lakers somehow went that scorched earth (they won't), then CP3 may as well just stay with the Clippers. It's still the LA market but Paul, Griffin and the supporting cast of a 56-win team would far surpass Paul, Howard and 10 scrubs. There's just no realistic way that the Lakers can become a factor with Paul. Don't worry about it.

If Miami doesn't win the championship this year, i think the big 3 will be broken up after next season, because next season the competition is just going to get more competitive for a team like the heat.
Even if Howard were to get traded to Miami, or to OKC, or LAC, no you shouldn't worry. When that's settled, the Rockets still have a lot of cap flexibility to go after somebody else. Howard might be the most attainable second star, but there's other guys who can fill in the role.
There's no need to demand a sign and trade to play with Lebron in Miami when he will be able to play with Lebron on the Lakers in 2014. With potentially only Dwight and Steve Nash signed in 2014 (who may actually retire), the Lakers should be able to sign Lebron and Kyrie Irving to combine with Dwight. Then they can fill the rest of the team with mercenaries looking to win a ring.
The Lakers ship has already passed for CP3. Lakers are eying Kyrie Irving as their PG of the future now.
Man, I hope that's true. that's along time to wait for someone who may or may not give up money to sign there as a FA... and the Lakers currently have little to no worthwile assets to pursue him in a trade. In any scenario, its at least another year and a half before this is even remotely feasible, and even then highly unlikely. Please pursue this Lakers. Please!
Too bad Irving isn't a free agent until 2015, and even then will be restricted, meaning Cleveland matches any offer. Such a shame.
