Here's your answer, KillScarz. To be honest, I didn't think it was offensive until I thought how people would react if similar jokes were made for other minorities. In any case, "no homo" jokes always made me kind of uncomfortable, but I've occasionally even partaken myself...
By saying no homo you're pointing out the homophobic about what you're saying. There's nothing homophobic about saying "I love you, bro". You love the guy as a brother. When you add "no homo" at the end of it, are you suggesting that there's something gay about what you just say. Be a man and stop adding "no homo" at everything you think that is homophobic.
Homos are way too sensitive in this country. Hey, if you can take a penis, you should be able to take a joke.
I'm a middle school teacher, and with one of my classes, we discussed this phrase one day. The consensus was that is used as a playful way for boys to give other boys a compliment without sounding interested them in a sexual way. A student used the example on me, and I had to laugh a little bit. Student: "Mr. _____, that shirt looks dope on you. No homo." So, I understand it in that context, but I do see how it might be interpreted as offensive and cruel, so we had a discussion about that as well. I don't think Roy was trying to be offensive to the gay community, but he should know better not to say that on a microphone.
It's just odd. I don't think I can ever understand some of the political correctness around this issue. To a heterosexual man, there is no bigger insult than to be called or misconstrued as g*y. That's just fact, right? For a homosexual man, the same words shouldn't even be an insult. It's the context. It's an insult to a straight man & not an insult to g*y man, yet the g*y man is the one being offended??? Just doesn't make sense. Basically, what I'm saying is no matter how much you try to doll it up, a straight man is never going to be cool with being considered g*y. And I guarantee if they mic'd up the players out there, 90% of the trash talk is about equating the opponent to being g*y. This is the one insensitivity that I don't believe will ever go away, because it's just nature. I probably articulated my point very poorly and should just shut up.
i've got to ask how much for "no homo" and how much for "motherf***er"?? Even? Weighted? does he get a receipt?
ALOT of my friends say it, just in response to stuff like "nice tshirt, nice haircut, etc", hell even the more crass girls say it, and it is in NO way meant as a derogatory term, much less a homophobic slur. I'm not one to tell people what they should and shouldn't be offended by EVER, but this is ******* rediculous
It wasn't like Paul George said something to him that could be construed to be gay. Example- Paul : "Roy is so big and he gets all up into them" Roy : "Lol F****t!" What actually happened was a very commonly used phrase which I find harmless as it isn't so much a blatant obscenity towards an isolated group but more so of a "What I said could be mixed up so I will add this to sure it up that I am not gay and make it more of a joke" moment. This should be a non-issue.
I was waiting for somebody to try and use the whole "slurs against African people angle" "No homo" isn't on the same level as the "n-word" Homo is slang for homosexual....an acceptable term for somebody who engages in relationships/sexual activity with a person of the same sex. Using "No Homo" is in poor taste.... However the suggest that it is on the same level as the "n-word" a word that has been used to cheapen, degrade and disrespect the heritage of millions upon millions of African people worldwide for over 500 years is just ignorant.
I think that's the issue is it not? Heterosexual man shouldn't feel offended that someone calls him gay or homosexual. In fact there is nothing wrong with being gay or homosexual. By default that means it shouldn't be offensive to anyone. However as you clearly pointed out most people that are straight males will treat being called gay as some insult or attack on masculinity. That in turn suggests gays are inferior or less masculine (debatable of this is true or not). Hence offensive to this minority
If Hibbert said "We beat Miami like an adopted child", would that be okay? Certainly no derogatory terms in that sentence, just a joke in poor taste. But if the media pointed out that it might be offensive to adopted children and Hibbert felt badly and apologized for it, I wouldn't care in the slightest. And that's exactly what happened here. Why do people feel the need to defend a juvenile joke?
