If the Rockets land Howard and don't immediately trade Asik, why would Morey use a draft pick on a project big man at this point... Especially when we still have D-Mo and Tim-O on the roster. Delfino and Garcia (if they bring him back) or both past 30 and I don't know how much faith should be put in Anderson. Guys like Tony Snell and Ricky Ledo (who looks to be an excellent running mate for Harden) may be on the board in the 2nd when the Rockets draft. And I personally think we need one of those guys (and they are also best available) over a project big man.
Because both Howard and Asik are 27-28. By the time they start to wind down in 3-4 years, that project big should be ready to fill in by then. No use in waiting until one breaks down to start looking.
I don't think Asik breaks down soon. U I'm very leery of tall skinny centers as they have trouble defending their man in the NBA. See Thabeet, Whiteside for recent examples. In 4 years, he'll be a free agent. Rockets may lose a lot of players getting 2nd and third stars. They will need another wing, point, or a stretch 4 more than a guy who won't play for 3 years. Ohlbrecht is interesting. I don't think he can beat out ohlbrecht right now.
If the Rockets get Dwight and keep Asik and Ohlbrecht, the roster will look like this: Howard, Asik, Smith, Ohlbrecht Motiejunas, Jones, White Parsons, Harden, Anderson Lin, Beverley So that is 12 players with 7 guys that are either Cs or PFs. The Rockets always run with 3 PGs. That is 13 players. The Rockets don't like to play Parsons 48 minutes. That makes a wing 14th player. The Rockets like to run small ball, so that makes another wing desirable. 15 players. There isn't room for Noguera unless he is the best player available and he can beat out one of the other centers. Smith would eat him alive in the paint. I am very interested in seeing Ohlbrecht. I think he has good potential as a backup PF/C. With the above listed roster, he may actually be able get PT at PF since he could be used as a stretch four. He hasn't been utilized as a stretch four for a couple of seasons so he may need to work on his form again. As mentioned before, I have a huge bias against ultra thin centers. To put things in perspective, I would trust Harden and about 7 other Rockets ahead of Noguera as a man to man defender in the post. His thin shoulders suggest to me it will be hard for him to put on the muscle to be able to hold his position. If the Rockets go center, it will be someone like Muscala or Iverson. They may be able to contribute while on their first contract. Even if Noguera develops, it will most likely be late in his first contract before he is useful. Morey seems to be like NFL GMs. Use the draft to get cheap players that can be in rotation so you can afford your stars. Trade them for younger players or draft picks even if the draft pick is lower before they hit free agency.
Howard is breaking down already...Lol. But, you say we need to draft a big man now for 3-4 years down the road. Parsons and Lin only have 2 years left on their contracts. So it's more of a need to draft at those positions now. And we're weak coming off the bench on the perimeter as well. Right now we have Delfino, Anderson, and Honeycutt. You can't tell me you feel good about that when McHale likes to go small.
Don't we have another PF coming over from Europe as well...? And TJ could actually back up Parsons also but if the Rockets stick with their young group of 4's he'll more than likely get first shot.
What i meant by breaking down is for some time in the future as they get older. Plus, if Howard does come here, the H in H-town will then stand for Hack because Howard and Asik are going to get chopped up during the season.
Also, i am not advocating that we go after Nogueira. I only mentioned him because he may be the one left at #34. I think Muscala will go in the 1st or right before we pick. Muscala is the center i want.
Could Muscala learn how to Love? http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Mike-Muscala-6520/stats/ http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Kevin-Love-1062/stats/
The main problemn with the BPA is that it depends on two things: 1. It assumes you know who the BPA is (like it's NBA 2k13 and you have guys with Over all ranking stats) 2. It assumes there is an infinite number of players available that you can trade for once you get the BPA People who follow the BPA method tend to have multiple players at the same position, hence why you had Kahn picking both Flynn and Rubio or Morey getting yet another PF when we already had 10 in the roster. Personally, I think you have to also consider value when you draft, and "8" C is worth way more than a 9 "pg" IMHO in the league.
The problem with drafting for need is that: 1. It assumes you know who the best player at your position of need is. 2. Your team ends up with less talent. There is a finite of star players. The star position is the most important one to fill. When one becomes available for trade, the team that drafts BPA has the more talented players to make a trade for the star. 3. A need today could be a surplus tomorrow with a trade. On Kahn drafting Rubio and Flynn, where would the TWolves be if they had drafted Flynn and Hill? Would they be Charlotte bad? Even with Morey's drafting BPA with a lot of PFs, PF still is the biggest need outside of a star player.
Have you guys noticed who the last two workouts reported by the Rockets were with? Colton "son of" Iverson and Zeke Marshall. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=7984653&postcount=39
Wow, a lot has changed on DX'S mock. Tony Snell has pretty much changed places with Archie Goodwin. Snell is now in the 1st round. Goodwin is falling fast. He is now 9th pick in the second round. Colton Iverson is having a pretty good surge. He is now in the top half of the second round. Muscala and Mouhammadou have fallen back a bit, which is great imo. We have a better chance of getting one of them. Steven Adams and Shane Larkin have both moved into the lottery.
