Need BimaThug to step in here, but I "thought" that your first round picks counted against the cap during the offseason, even if you take an overseas player. Then during the season it comes off the cap (if unsigned). I thought that was the case with D-Mo his first year after being drafted. I would think the Rockets could use T-Rob to get in the late first round, but if it counts against the cap now regardless if you have the player signed or not, I would think lotto-protected future picks would be ideal.
A pick would be nice a mid first round, if we got C.J McCollum as a back up SG that would just be awesome. ;] Lin/Bev Harden/C.J. Parsons/Delfino Asik/Jones/Donuts Howard/Donuts/Smith
exactly I still feel Robinson does have a place in this league but he would be hard pressed to find that home in Houston with Motiejunas and Jones being there and showing more promise right now than he has. Ultimately it becomes a numbers game and this time around his numbers just make him the most logical choice to get moved. He does show promise and he was a high lotto pick last year (most likely would have been 5-10 this year as well I would believe) there will be a team that will take a chance on him especially if all it would take is a mid to late first round pick.
Pretty sure this is correct. Which is why I doubt we're trying to get into this draft by trading T-rob. Unless it's for a 2nd rounder.
From a value standpoint, dealing Robinson in June puts the Rockets in their best negotiating position. No one will have filled any holes (even "potentially") through the draft. No one will be talking to free agents. It's a clean slate. Wait until July, and some teams will have filled their holes on the front line while everyone will know the Rockets are desperate. My guess is that would diminish our expected return. Also, another thing about the Beasley deal was that it was only a necessity for a third max salary -- i.e. LeBron. They already had the room for Bosh. The Rockets really need the ability to wake up on July 1 and already offer a full-max deal to Dwight. There are enough potential stumbling blocks already before adding that "condition" to the offer.
Could we trade him for the rights to a player that another team has stashed in Europe? I'm not thinking of a particular player or team, just the possibility. Lord knows, players can be stashed over there a long time, often longer than we might wish.
not even the dumbest team in the league will trade next year's 1st round pick without at least #1 protection
Rockets have TRob, TJones, DMo as young PFs. They also have Royce and Greg Smith, but I assume both of them aren't exactly hot trade commodities. TRob is due to make $3.5 million TJones $1.55 million DMo $1.4 million Royce $1.7 million In order I preference, I like the best: TJones DMo TRob You obviously don't want a first round pick this year... that defeats the cap saving purpose. The only way I'd trade 2 of the 3 would be for something like the bobcats pick from detroit.
First round picks do count against the cap but they count nothing as far as salary in trade until they are signed.
