That would leave them with only $10M to $12M in cap space. They won't get their next star for that kind of money therefore they wouldn't do it. If the Lakers end up using cap space it will be in '14 when they have enough to go after a star and supporting players. They're not going to burn their cap space now without getting their next star.

Also, the CBA limits a teams ability to backload a contract for non-Arenas free agents. Just as the Lakers would be limited to offering a free agent a max of a 4.5% raise for each year of his contract, they are also limited to a 4.5% reduction in each year of any free agent deal.

If they did amnesty Bryant, lose Howard and either trade Gasol without taking anything back or just let him expire then they'll have a ton of cap room in '14. The problem is that I don't think big name free agents are going to be anxious to sign with a Laker team that doesn't have Howard, Bryant or Gasol.

This would be like picking up Jordan when he came back and played for the Wizards.

The only thing I hope is that the Rockets stay as far as possible away from Kobe and Pau.

We should pick him up and assign him to ride around with Royce White.

Kobe is on record saying that he will never wear another team's jersey in his NBA career.

Remember P.Jackson in his book that M.Jordan to a higher standard than Kobe and J.Buss is a fiance to Zen Master. You know Phil is not just going to talk love story to J.Buss. Either the Lakers going to fall hard with Kobe, or continue their winning ways. In sports, there are a lot of surprises, it would not shock me if they do that to Kobe. I believe they'll force Kobe to retire as Lakers then retire his jersey immediately.

But with this kind of injury and also Kobe's miraculous healing powers and determination, its a wait and see approach. Amnestying him might be jumping the gun.

Oh yeah right! He has no choice now. Remember when he wanted to go to Chicago.

Yeah you're right. That huge ego he has. But you know who wouldn't mind getting amnestied for the better of the team and getting signed back for less? Everybody... Timmy and Dirk for sure.

If he wants to emulate Jordan he'll retire this season and come back in 3-4 years to join the Bobcats.

    WWMCD

(What would Mark Cuban Do [if he strikes out on Dwight and CP3 with a crap ton of cap space])

Kobe would only get amnestied if he told Mitch Kupchak he was cool with it. And he probably would just sit out the whole season next year re-habbing his achilles until he signs a smaller deal with Lakers in 2014. But that said, the Rockets, or some other team in search of more revenue can pick him up and put his picture on the ads for tickets, sell some Kobe jerseys, etc... Still might be worth it.

If the Lakers amnesty him, they will lose their Bird Rights though and will be less flexible with their roster in 2014.

Ouch! It's quite possible that that's exactly what it would be like.

If Kobe is amnestied, he should go to the team that drafted him in the first place, IMO ...
