The only issue with that is what happens to that area on non-event days. Its not like Reliant is in the middle of a city... its on its own grounds, and it would be hard for outside businesses to build on already owned/private land.

But I'm sure if it made everybody more $$$, they'd find a way to make it work.

You think a giant stripmall would go over well in Houston? This is the sort of visionary leadership we need, and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter. :)

Big name concert sounds like a good idea. I remember they had something similar, but not as grand. I remember it being sponsored by Pepsi. and I remember Better Than Ezra played one day.

    Sounds like fun.

Please do something with the Astrodome. I was all in favor of any idea they had floating around but it's been almost 15 years since the last pro sports team vacated and about a decade since any high schools played a game there. Blow it up. Heck, do it creatively like saving the dome structure at the top by dissembling it to individual pieces and reassembling it elsewhere.

Do anything but let it rot on the taxpayers dime.

Call it TD (tailgate dome). Tailgating extravaganza every Sunday . Charge $10 per person. Keep the top of the dome as a canopy.

Not sure about the costs benefit analysis, but if they actually redesigned the Astrodome into a parking structure...charged people btwn 5-10 dollars for parking, I am sure that the builders of a parking garage would recoup every dime they spent on it...and then use shuttle buses to move people from the dome to the stadium...i would be on board with something like that...I dont know why there hasnt been much momentum in regards to that idea...

Doing anything with the dome is going to be expensive. That is why nothing is being done with it.

At first I laughed, but if they could do that, might be a great idea. Have just the structured beams with the air space in between and level the interior to parking space level and then since it is an outdoor cover with all the air space, then asbestos not a real issue...who knows although.

If someone started a fire in the dome and caused it to be demolished I wouldn't even be mad.

It can't be turned into a mall, casino or hotel because Rodeo/Texans/Reliant are not interested in giving up the parking space. A hotel/casino/mall would have to agree to no conventions/events/all shops closed on Sundays, no events/conventions/all shops closed, etc. during the evening for Rodeo season, same for any time Reliant scheduled a concert.

It just can't work. They need to tear the thing down. It's asbestos ridden, an eye sore and a money pit. Get rid of the thing, put in parking and be done with it.

since the people paid and are still paying for it, give it back to the people. i agree with that UH student, strip it down to it's steel frame and surround it with a mini-version of champ de mars. add some lights to light it up like the eiffel tower. make it a landmark and destination.

also you can convert field level (which is below grade) to parking so Rodeo/Texans should be happy. above the lower level parking leave the in-field memorialized with ground bronze plaques or something.

agree with this 100%... save the structure and turn it into a true landmark for houston. add some retial component and a lot of greenery to make it inticing to visit 365. you can still keep a great deal of parking or even incorporate a parking structure somehow.

i don't like the thought of imploding what is essnetially the greatest landmark this city has ever had simply to add more parking.

I think it's poetic - it's a city whose modern development has been more or less completely focused around personal automobile transportation and freeways (for good or bad...)

you all would seriously go to the Dome if it was something else? I have tons of great Oilers/Rodeo/Astros memories from there back in the day as a kid, but I don't care at all if it stays around. It's an eye sore these days...and I certainly wouldn't go there if it was a mall...

if it was closer to DT i would say renovate it and do whatever ridiculous plans they had for it like a planetarium, or movie studio, whatever but its in such bad location, next to a stadium that needs to be surrounded by empty lots and green space.. i liekd the one plan that included tearing it down, building greenspace in its footprint along with tearing down reliant arena and rebuilding a new one..
