Christmas will come early - but just barely - for riders looking forward to Metro's North Line light rail extension.

Better-than-expected construction progress means the line between University of Houston Downtown and Northline Commons north of Loop 610, via Main Street and Fulton Street, is scheduled to open this year, Metropolitan Transit Authority officials said Thursday.

"They are making good progress and instead of early 2014, will be opening the North Line in December, sometime before Christmas," Metro spokesman Jerome Gray said.

Rail and concrete for platforms are in place, and most of the remaining construction involves electrical, landscaping and finishing the eight stations along the 5.3-mile extension.

In addition to finishing construction, Metro will test the line by running trains without passengers. That testing is planned for later in the summer, said David Couch, Metro's vice president of capital projects, during an April presentation.

Most of the $756 million project is being paid for with federal funds.

The North Line is one of three new light rail lines under construction. The East Line and Southeast Line are not expected to open until next year.

Probably won't ride it, but I'm excited about it anyway.

Nice, well eh. I will be elated when it at least reached the Beltway. I just hope they will be logical in their future expansion. Question, since the vote failed in November for funding, what does that mean for the future? could they easily put it back on the ballot?

Great, they should be contecting the Galleria to DT and the NW Transit center and 59, not these.

And I think I voted wrong on the funding in the last election, the wording was so damn confusing.

BINGO! this was a BIG deal but so little was made of it in the media. It's obvious they worded it a certain way to confuse people. I know several folks who made the same mistake

All the new lines are going threw the ghetto areas

does that mean more ghetto peeps are going to ride it to downtown.

Doesn't seem like it would benefits the working class, unless it was going into more developed area like down Washington, Westheimer, or Kirby area

Most would probably still use it to go from downtown to medical center.

Could you please explain this statement. I hope you don't think that only
people living along Washington,Westeimer or Kirby work work for a living!

As far as ghetto, well ghetto is subjective! Bill Gates might have a broader
opinion than ours as to what might be ghetto

If they can get the Blue line going then it will expand out better.

The current expansions of Purple/Green and Red Line ... who lives out there? Unless, I need to pick up some weekend supplies.

Sounds like you don't know anything about the neighborhoods the Red Line runs through. Maybe you should refrain from making comments about it. Not trying to sound rude.

It's unfortunate that you don't see a need in these areas. Are these the
ghetto areas that you are referring to? Low income perhaps but ghetto?
Regardless these areas have just as much right to light rail as any other
    area!

As far as your weekend supplies, you can get that in any part of town!..

it's going to take 2 hours to go from fannin south to the northest point CAUSE IT STOPS AT EVERY FKING STOP!

can't they freaking make an express train that goes from the med center to downtown? as soon as the train picks up speed it stops again.

Eisenhower did not want freeways to go through cities

But Eisenhower never intended that the Interstates be built through densely populated cities. A memorandum of a 1960 meeting in the Oval Office, available in the archives of Eisenhower’s presidency, makes this crystal-clear:

[The President] went on to say that the matter of running Interstate routes through the congested parts of the cities was entirely against his original concept and wishes; that he never anticipated that the program would turn out this way . . . and that he was certainly not aware of any concept of using the program to build up an extensive intra-city route network as part of the program he sponsored. He added that those who had not advised him that such was being done, and those who steered the program in such a direction, had not followed his wishes.

For starters, the existing Red line plus the Purple and Green lines connect every university in the city except University of St. Thomas.

But if you drive through those areas, you'll notices lots of big square wooden things call houses. Often people live in those. Just because you make a personal choice not to associate with the beings there doesn't mean that they are not people.

Your comment is condescending, rude and/or ignorant.
