Can anyone tell me if you are eligible for a grant for summer semesters if you are only going part time for the fall/spring? From what I have been reading it seems you have to be full time for fall/spring at 12 hours each.

But then I'm not sure if that is implying that you have used up the maximum $5500 a year. But that does not make sense either because you would not use that full amount regardless if you were part time.

There is no pell grant for the summer. You are supposed to use the leftover aid you have from fall/spring to take summer classes.

And yes to qualify you have to take 12 hrs each semester. This pretty much means that most students end up paying out of pocket for summer classes (unless you are going to a community college) as the average public school tuition in Texas is around 5000 per semester.

During my undergrads UH never offered summer aid, i just used my refunds to pay for summer classes.

I just don't understand the logic. If I am only going say 6 hours each in the fall and spring why I can't get additional aid in the summer. Its all the same amount.

It is impossible for me to go more. I have a 2 year I take care of and work full time.

You do qualify if you only took 6 hours in the fall and 6 in the spring. You would have 12 hours of unused Pell eligibility to use in the summer.

Dave Ramsey has a service cost about $130 that helps you find scholarships and grants. I bought this for my cousin a year ago when she was preparing to go to UT. There are numerous grants and scholarships that people do not apply for each year. My cousin gets a refund from UT since she started.

    Good luck.

    This.

But about 2 years ago when I took summer school, they actually did have a separate fund for financial aid and they were able to cover my summer school but only if I took 6 units.

It seems like they changed the policy recently as I know a couple people who wanted to take summer school but the financial aid office said what platypus said.

Im a financial aid advisor. You can still get grants as long as you are half time (6 hours) or more. You may also qualify for TPEG grants if your college still has money remaining. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

OK thank you. So as long as you take 2 classes each semester during the normal school year you are eligible for help during the summer.

Yes as long as you dont go over your award year eligibility which is usually $5550. If your EFC is 0 and you only take 6 hours then you are a half-time student. As a half-time student you are eligible for $1387 per semester. So if you half-time for fall and spring your only using about $2775 of your $5550. So that will leave you with a remaining amount of $2775 for the summer which you will still be able to use.

When I was going full-time in Fall/Spring was 9, and maybe 6 in Summer. Until junior year, my father was working overseas and only had to report a fraction of his income on the W2; had no problem getting Pell Grants for Fall, Spring and Summer sessions.

And don't limit yourself to grants man I applied to a crap ton of scholarships during college and out of the 100 or so i applied to ir received about 15. Two of which helped pay my way throughout my education.

If you are applying and need some advise/scholarship lists PM me through the board and i'll give you the list my advisor used to give me :)

    Good luck!

Thanks man I'll probably take you up on that. Even though a lot probably are age dependant (hopefully not) because I'm as old as dirt.
