well may not be a win for parsons. it's only a win for parson if another team is willing to give him an offer that the rockets will then decide whether or not to match. but if the rockets make it known to everyone that they are willing to match any offer for parson and scares everyone off, then technically, houston can sign him to whatever amount they want (since there will be no competing offers other there) if he wants to remain in the nba. making him a RFA is in houston's best interest if houston likes him as a player. you save a little for one year and make him a UFA, you will surely overpay for him if you want him back. and he may not even want to come back.
Ya that definitely could be a concern assuming Parsons continues to improve and puts up even better stats next season, but I think the Rockets will find a solution where both parties will be satisfied. The other area that Parsons can make more money, besides his NBA contract, is through endorsements. If the Rockets are able to build a contender and get more successful, not only the U.S. will be available, but so would mainland China and others (Taiwan, Singapore, etc). Assuming Lin is part of that overall team success, and with Kobe might retiring soon, the market is going to open up even more possibilities.
A team must present the player a qualifying offer when they become RFA. It's based on the previous salary, but higher than what Parsons will be getting if the Rockets had simply picked up his option. So for Parsons, he's getting more money regardless. And for the Rockets, unless it's part of a package deal with Howard, no way in holy hell are they making Parsons a RFA. Would be an anti-Morey move in every sense.
So you thinking that if Morey makes him play out all 4 years with out letting him become an unrestricted free agent next summer that Dan Fegan is going to let Morey have Parsons for a sweetheart deal because the Rockets gave him a chance.. Okay, if you say so... Lol...
No reason to think he won't improve... I'm sure he will get paid from endorsements but it's still about that NBA money.
But if they don't, they can lose him all together. At least as a restricted free agent they can keep him if they want.
No they can't. Not unless Parsons is willing to take less money at another place. And why would Parsons do that?
BimqThug Thx for the correction again. I was too focused on saying the Gilbert arenas rule won't apply and incorrectly attached that being restricted or not, while just really trying to state the two year aspect of the rule. My bad. Thx as always. Like I told you in Houston I'm no longer up to date on the cba. You are awesome
It depends on how much he improves... Things can change after 2 years. Some people already think Jeremy Lin won't improve that much. But Parsons obviously could boost his value tremendously if he becomes an All-star next season. The Rockets can gamble and make him a RFA and a desperate team could offer him a max contract in that situation, which the Rockets can match but end up paying more luxury taxes sooner than later. Or the Rockets can wait to see if he can do it again after the 4th and see what happens when he becomes a UFA. The endorsements will help all-around. The amount he gets will probably play a factor when considering the tax ramifications. All this with Fegan making matters worse. So it might be better for the Rockets to wait it out.
Why does Fegan make matters worse? I suppose only if the Rockets stupidly sign Howard. I don't want Howard at all. The agent wants to get his players the most money of course. I think Parsons will say to him, "I want to sign with Houston & I don't want Howard coming here taking all the money," forcing him to leave Houston, so if Howard leaves L.A. the agent will try to put him with Dallas. So that is actually a very astute move by Parsons to hire Fegan. I personally can't see the Rockets signing Howard if it is going to cost them Parsons, which probably it would, since Lin (too popular) & Asik (too productive) aren't going anywhere. The only thing I think that could change that is if the owner wants Howard at nearly any expense, then Morey would look to trade Asik, but Morey wouldn't make that decision himself. Hopefully, the owner doesn't want him that badly but who knows? If the owner wants star players so badly, Parsons is going to be a bigger star than Howard in a couple of years. Yes, the earliest Parsons can get a new contract is after next season, so you don't have to make any of moves until then, but I don't think it would be good to go through next season with so much up in the air, multiple players uncertain about their future.
Feigen might say to the Rockets if you don't make Parsons a RFA after next season, then after the following season we are not re-signing with you.
It is Fegan's job to maximize his client's value, not dictate where or where not they want to play. If Parsons wants to be a Rocket, he will be a Rocket. Besides, he's restricted.
That's because it is his job. An agent that consistently secure great financial packages for his clients is obviously very good at his job. Team chemistry and securing championships is the job of the FO, coaching staff and players.
Yes, but if Parsons plays at All-Star level or close next season the team should give him a new contract before his 4th season. He will be a restricted free agent after next season only if the team chooses that & an unrestricted free agent the following season if they do nothing. That is how I understand it, but I may be wrong. I don't know when they have to make that decision either. If other teams were in this situation, I'd say 99% of them would give the player a new contract as soon as the rules allowed it.
certainly seems like a goodwill gesture with morey completely in the drivers chair. Also you got to think if fegan screws us on howard morey can do the exact opposite and not let parsons out of his contract early, and then pushing that big contract back year. 4th year could be big...he could be traded to a lesser team, (not accomplish as much) like the bobcats for draft pick...he could get injured...heck could be made as a 6th man and struggle. So just saying that gives us some serious pull with fegan. Morey basically has 4-5 million dollars dangling over his head...based entirely on moreys will. If that doesnt provoke fegan to treat us fairly I dont know what would.
Yah thats why I keep telling everyone. EVERY contract on this team has a purpose. The exact dollar figure, options EVERYTHING...morey took into consideration. He knows he can have insane flexibility to move, trade, cut players depending on what he needs to do. If he wants he can make room for 2 max players...period. I know this because I can do basic math, but also I know that morey is a million times smarter then me, and I wouldnt go through what the rockets did and not make sure I had extreme flexibility to make a run at max free agents. Not saying he will get 2...just that he can.
The only thing is, the Parsons and Fegan agreement most likely is totally independent of any discussion with Morey. I mean, which player chooses their agents only after been given the blessing from their GM. In many (and not subtle) ways, an agent has a conflict of interest with the GM of the player he represents, especially when nearing contract negotiations. Agent wants the largest contract + endorsement deals which is impacted by team location (and commissions), while the GM wants to manage the salary cap and especially in Morey's case, doesn't want to turn a good asset (good player at reasonable/tradable contract) into a liability (good player paid above his production that is difficult to trade). I'd highly doubt Morey was the mastermind behind all this. Too much risk. Fegan is no walkover. And there isn't a history of cooperation.
I dont know if you pay much attention to Parsons but he is super team oriented and all over the free agency recruiting thing. If morey said hey...you should go sign with fegan and we will do our best to get you paid a year earlier...and it could help us bring dwight. Chandler goes..................good idea. Morey has said several times that chandler has gone to him about trying to earn money. So he would listen to him if this is what morey advised.
Morey would not do that cmon Morey is a professional and would not give himself and Rockets organization a bad reputation.
