I think Microsoft has kind of screwed the pooch here. I think all the entertainment stuff is pretty cool. But ultimately, it's still a gaming machine and the specs between the One and PS4 are pretty similar. If you take things away gamers are used to (like the ability to rent/play used games) and add restrictions (like the need to be online, even if only sporadically) and the other console doesn't, then you lose.

I buy maybe 2 games a year and rent the rest through GameFly. Essentially taking away my ability to rent games isn't going to make me buy more games. And if I'm only going to play one or two new games a year, it's probably not worth it to buy the console. If PS4 doesn't have that restriction, I'm getting it over the One. If PS4 does the same thing, I'm not buying either.

There you go, this is smart. Buying the system that best fits your need. There are THREE consoles out there, no need to cry about the ONE because it does not come with something PS4 does....

I'm sorry but pirating is just as easy with the consoles if you don't believe me. All you have to do is paid for the mod chip and update the firmware and you can play any downloaded ISO. I don't think Microsoft is that stupid to make it non hackable if they don't want to lose a large percentage of their base.

Lol no.... Just no.... Sorry but its not that easy and are you aware that a modded xbox can be banned from online play? Sounds like alot of trouble to me vs a PC/laptop wich everyone already has for all those others things and is just one torrent click away from pirating a game.....

You think you can play online with pirated games nowadays? Sure you probably might be able to with only a few games but on some ****ty emulator online servers so it's not the same thing. Seriously how hard is it compare to a PC? Just like a PC you open the console and stick in the Xkey like you would put a video card into a PC. Maybe it takes a little more work but when all is done people just one click away for their torrent.

Im just a casual gamer these days. I throw on a game, listen to music and kill and hour or two.

The idea that I need to be online all the time to do that is ridiculous. That I need to pay extra for second hand games....I just won't be doing that.

I currently have an XBox 360 and I buy most second hand games. Its rare I will buy a new game, the last one I got was Halo 4.

I'm just not interested in dropping $100 every time a new game comes out any more. Im not interested in paying for the data so that Microsoft can look at what I'm playing and try to find a way to gouge more money out of me after I paid them hundreds of dollars to play their new system anyway.

Why would I do any of that when I can just download a new game to my Ipad or even my PC for a lot less money?

So a lot of this news is really disappointing to me.

Im sure the PS4 will, at some point, implement paying for used games.

These companies are all losing money while Gamestop and Gamefly make money...by doing this, Sony and MS will get back the money they have been losing. Pretty business savvy.

I never buy used games, so I dont mind it and I can see why MS would do it. I would too if I were them...and Sony will follow in their steps.

The days are numbered for Gamestop and Gamefly...or rather, they will see profits drop drastically.

Lack of backwards compatibility means there is little chance I buy one at launch.

I'm sure classic titles will become available for download, but I hate buying titles several times (Though I've done it for FF and Zelda).

Sony and MS don't really lose a lot of money on used games (at least as platform holders). They miss out on royalties (so maybe $5-$13 per game, though some of the popular used games might have had "royalty-free" deals anyway).

It is the publishers who miss out on the money. Like I said earlier, I think Sony's stance is to let publishers implement a similar system (if they so wish), but not sure if they'll actually do this themselves. Maybe they will now that MS is confirmed to be doing it, but they may also see this as a way to get the gamers MS pissed off (of which, there seem to be many). Also, unless they were already planning it, I'm not sure how easy this would be to implement so late in the game. You could do it after the system is launched, but that could get messy (are 1st gen used games OK, but 2nd gen and on restricted?).

As I said earlier, I think pushing digital downloads would be a more effective way of cutting into profits from Gamestop/Gamefly/etc. Keeps gamers and publishers happy.

    Come on, EA.

I kind of figured this, but it actually looked kind of bad too, so I was actually pretty confused about what it was supposed to be.

Yes! Kill the used game market, more revenue for us developers.

I'm really curious how much games are going to cost. The new releases are usually about $60 for 360. I don't want to pay more than that for games.

If there's one compentency that MS is displaying, it's sustainability. The market for casual gamers and people seeking a cool/different entertainment experience is LOT bigger than that of hardcore gamers.

I don't think that it would be a stretch for Xbox to extend or even top last generations success into the One. Most hardcore gamers will probably end up buying one anyway, then just complain about it afterwards. MS will still win.

People buy hardware not primarily because of the performance capabilities per se but because of the software that runs on it. If you've got the proper software, you can then sell the hardware that runs it. This has been the point that MS has been driving home from the beginning but tech blogs, like whores in the night, have been ignoring it. A Surface Pro is a productivity tool for the same reason that an Ipad is not: it runs the relevant software.
In the same way, this used games schtick brings no direct financial gain to MS and evidently is a honey pot for the people that makes the gaming software: developers. Once developers shift their allegiance to MS, Xbox one will be the only one running the big games and hence the same butthurt gamers complaining now would be the ones who will buy it. Once you've got the software, you can compel people to buy the hardware.

Not as good as the PS4 version, but this was pretty good:

PS4 video if you missed it:
