Ruh-oh. They making moves to appease a certain somebody, or did they do it for everybody? Or PJax? Or maybe he wants to get back into "acting"?

Wow. Is that from Shelburne? I hope so... she's the best reporter in LA, imo. Note that no one else has had the scoop on where Dwight has been lately (Lake Tahoe to think over everything). Her sources are almost Woj-like in accuracy and uniqueness, though her intel is largely limited to the Lakers/Clippers and not the NBA as a whole. If she said that, she's really hearing things.

I agree that Dwight is just trying to see what LA will come up with as a plan for moving forward.

    A few things we know:

    - Nash is not the same PG he was, and he will only get worse.
    - Kobe will not be the same SG that he was, and even if he is, he doesn't have many years left in him.
    - Gasol's contract is up next year. How many teams will be willing to give up a significant piece for a 1-year, $20 million rental?
    - Regardless of what LA does, they can't really add anything to the roster for the 2013-2014 season. So year one of his potential 5 year contract is a waste. Between himself and Nash.
    - For 2014-2015, between Dwight, Nash and 10 cap holds, the Lakers will have ~$25 million in cap space (assuming the cap is put at $62 million). That's enough to sign 1 other max level player and then fill out the roster with scrubs/vet minimum contracts. The only max level free agents available in 2014 are LeBron/Wade/Bosh (doubtful they will opt out) and Nowitzki/Kobe/Pau Gasol (two were already teammates on a 7th seeded team, and the other is entering the twilight of his career).

Barring one of the big 3 in Miami opting out in 2014, some crazy trade where the Lakers are just given a great player for Gasol's expiring, or the Lakers hitting lottery magic...I don't see the Lakers competeing at any point over Dwights potential 5 year contract.

Wow. That said, the biggest news of today -- if accurate -- is Heisler's bit on Dwight still complaining about Kobe late in the year. I really think the Rockets are in the driver's seat here, and if the signing period began today, Dwight would be a Rocket. But two things scare me going forward:

1.) Whenever Kobe invites him over for a "recruiting" session
2.) The possibility of Phil returning

I know #2 is unlikely, but I've learned never to rule out Phil with the Lakers. No matter how many times he seems done, he always finds a way back into the conversation. My bigger fear is #1, because we know it's coming and Dwight did seem to be mending fences with Kobe later in the year (note the post-surgery visit, etc.). But if Dwight still doesn't see eye-to-eye with Kobe from a basketball standpoint, that is huge for us.

    Yeah, that's fair.

My concern would be time. Unfortunately none of us have control over that.

Time for Dwight to change his mind a time or two.
Time for the Lakers to hire Phil.
Time for something, anything to happen.

As you said, if he could sign today, he'd probably be a Rocket. Unfortunately, still one and a half months away. Until then...

Not really, teams would be all over if it upgrades their rosters and have to give up pretty much nothing like the Marcus morris deal.

Expirings are worth basically nothing this year, because so many teams rather than giving you an expiring can give you next to no salary at all (with maybe some kids thrown in).

some teams in the west might do that, but teams in the east need to try to find a way to beat miami, indiana, etc before they care about houston, dwight or no dwight.

Most teams aren't in the running for Dwight and won't care, they only want a good deal for themselves. We've helped NY get cap space for two max free agents before. Besides, you think teams would rather see Dwight in a Laker uniform with max cap space in 2014 than with us?

Apparently Dave McMenamin told Marcellus Wiley that "it looks like Dwight is gone right now BUT there are 6 weeks before that."

Then one of them came up with "2 maxes, no state taxes" slogan, ha.

Did anyone really think Dwight was going to take the blame for all the rumours?

    Anyone?

    ANYONE?

    Dave McMenamin:

Dwight hasn't played the me or Mike card. While we're trying to evaluate where Dwight's head is over the next 6 weeks, his relationship with MDA will be a part of this thought process. ... Maybe it's not a slam dunk he returns.

Financial considerations - that does make LA more attractive but terms and compensation. Break that down.

He stays in LA - 5 years max.
    Elsewhere - 4 years 88 million
He could sign a 3 year year deal under the thought process, in 3 years, I'll be 30, and then sign a 5 year extension. So you're talking an 8 year commitment to that team.

How does he envision him and Omer Asik?

Would be a challenge. It was for MDA. Defensively, you have to feel good about playing beside an Asik. You might lose something on offense. That's a challenge you think McHale might like to try and figure out.

    ...

James Harden already recruiting Dwight. Rockets can/know how to tap into the China fanbase. Dwight wants to be a global icon. You don't have the media scrutiny. He can be a big fish in a small pond like in Orlando.

Any incentive for a S&T (for Houston or Dwight)?

No, not for them at all. Most you can do is 4 years. He won't get the extra year. The Lakers would love a S&T. They can get a Parsons and/or a pick.

The talk between Kupchak and Dwight.

This was an exit interview. He was in conversation with Mitch and Mike. Mike leaves the room. He expressed frustration...Dwight felt like he didn't have a voice and felt marginalized.

We can't give Dwight a 5 year deal after his 3 or 4 year deal though. Doesn't the new CBA only allow one 5 year deal per team?
