I wonder if this has to do with off-field opportunities as oppose to NBA contract. CP's old agent seems to have done well with client contracts (landed huge deal for fellow FL alum David Lee). Parsons showing up at Billboard awards might mean he is looking to capitalize on his looks.
He tweeted about a meeting in LA last week.....and that he was happy about the meeting. Could this be it?
True. I know Chandler doesn't like it, but I doubt he holds any ill will toward the Rockets. Just the nature of the risk he took, and he understands that. My guess is that this has to do with trying to leverage the Rockets into letting him hit restricted free agency in 2014. I don't think Parsons wants to leave the Rockets whether its 2014 or 2015, but obviously hitting FA a year earlier gets him a head start on his next (significantly higher) contract. Assuming this is the case, I think it's good because both sides (the Rockets and Parsons/Fegan) know there's nothing that can be done this summer. It definitely shouldn't make the Fegan/Morey relationship worse, and my guess is that having the second-best player on the Houston roster will open the lines of communication more with those two. It's worth noting that the best chance for Parsons to get his new deal in 2014 (and thus, Fegan his commission) is if Dwight signs with the Rockets this summer. If that happens, and especially if it's accompanied by a move for Josh Smith or someone else, the core will be in place, thus eliminating the need for cap flexibility and making it more likely that the Rockets could give the "good faith" gesture to Chandler next summer. All that said, I know Chandler isn't on par with Dwight on Fegan's priority list. But my guess is that it would help a little that Dwight signing in Houston indirectly benefits one of Dan's other top clients. Perhaps takes the sting out a bit of losing the high chunk of LA endorsement money (per cyberx).
I agree with this sentiment. I think Parsons is worth around 32m/4yrs but anything beyond that makes him expendable imo. I'm not saying we should trade him, but if the right deal came along it would be worth considering. With that being said, I like Parsons and I hope he retires in a Rockets uniform without forcing us to overpay him.
I don't think Morey gives a crap. Chandler is restricted in a few years and he'll have a chnce to match or pass Parsons' next contract. Fegan doesn't determane how much he makes, the team that signs him to an offer sheet does.
Remember Parsons will be an unrestricted free agent. If a sports agent tells his client to play in Alaska, that player goes to Alaska. Bye bye Parsons.
If he improves from this year I see him getting a 10 M + contract, and I don't know if Morey views him as worth that much.
We don't know anything directly. But cyberx said that Fegan doesn't like Morey and doesn't think the Rockets can put a championship team in place. Here are the most likely reasons, as I see it: 1.) Fegan didn't like it in the spring/summer of 2012 when Morey was willing to call his bluff on trading for Dwight. Virtually every other team in the league was unwilling to trade for Dwight without an extension... but it didn't stop Morey. It seems possible, if not likely, that Morey was directly responsible for Dwight opting in at the deadline (thus delaying his FA by a year) and also dragging out the saga from late June until mid August. Hennigan might not have taken Morey's deal, but he used it as leverage and that complicated everything for Fegan's preferred destinations. Agents are powerful men with big egos, and my guess is Dan didn't take well to that. 2.) Kevin Martin. Everything about Martin's time in Houston was awkward... the trade that was vetoed, the "assets" comments, his rocky relationship with McHale and ultimately being shipped out in the Harden deal. At one point, Martin was one of Fegan's richest clients, and I don't think Kevin looks back at his time here fondly. 3.) Way back when, Fegan was directly responsible for Hakeem ending his career in Toronto. He turned Hakeem against the Rockets by arguing that we should've given a 38-year-old Dream a much richer deal out of loyalty. The Rockets, who were rebuilding at the time, were focused on the cap and needed something proportionate to production. This isn't a Morey thing, but historically, the Rockets as an organization haven't caved to Fegan's power plays in the way he'd like.
Not necessarily. If the Rockets decline Chandler's option next summer, he's a restricted free agent and the Rockets can match any offer. If the Rockets are able to sign Dwight, I think that's exactly what happens.
capitalize on his looks = playing in LA or NY As much as we say Dwight wants to be Mr. Hollywood, Chandler may actually be a better fit for that label.
If the Rockets get Dwight, whether the Rockets would pay Chandler is more a question of Les Alexander than Morey. The reason Morey is so strict in his valuations now is because there isn't a contending team in place. Cap room and flexibility is the priority. That said, if the Rockets add Howard and potentially one more piece (Smith?), cap room is no longer an issue. The core will be in place and the team will be capped out for the foreseeable future. Morey has said numerous times that the team is open to paying market value for role players if the foundational pieces are there. Note his Gay-for-Battier trade. There's simply no reason for the Rockets to let Parsons walk if they wouldn't have the cap room to sign something else. It'd be letting an asset walk for no benefit, and we all know what Daryl thinks of that. The only way Chandler leaves is if he gets an offer so rich that it would potentially put us into luxury tax territory and Les puts his foot down. But I highly doubt he gets that offer, and even if he does, I think Les likes Chandler so much from a business standpoint that he'd bite the bullet and pay.
I don't see too many possible negatives in the move. If Dwight signs here, then the Rockets will likely have some understanding on what it would take to keep Parsons and some goodwill built between them and the agent. If Dwight doesn't sign here, and there were problems between Fegan and the Rockets in those negotiations, then worst case would be the Rockets trading Chandler at some point over the next year and a half (not that I'd want to, but Daryl isn't letting a good, young talent walk). If you haven't read BimaThug's great analysis on the Parsons contract, it's worth checking out. It explains the possible restricted free agency in 2014 or unrestricted in 2015. http://rockets.clutchfans.net/3681/chandler-parsons-contract-take-two/ The main point I'm getting at is the Rockets are in the power seat on Parsons, and the decision on Howard comes first. If Fegan wants to help his new client get paid in 2014 rather than 2015, then it's his move on how he handles negotiations for Howard.
awesome stuff... This was a point I didn't think about. Not that parsons is the priority, but if Fegan wants to cash in on that big contract a year early...it will be important for him to treat the rockets fair in the Howard situation.
