It's not that Austin is safer, it's that people feel safer there. After all, who's afraid of a scrawny hipster in skinny jeans wearing an ironic mustache?

People in Detroit are ballsy if they feel that safe.

No one knows. A few brave souls went in search of this so-called "East Houston" but tragically, they never returned.

The prostitute in the wheelchair that always hangs out by the texaco on highlands road doesn't seem afraid...

Having lived in both Houston and Minneapolis I can agree with this and I think per capita crime statistics show that Minneapolis is safer than Houston. Weather probably plays a big role but I also think that Minneapolis being a more pedestrian friendly and smaller city makes a big difference.

Walking around at night, I'm more afraid of getting hit by a car than being a victim of a crime.

Most of houston is ghetto. There are a few pockets here and there that are ok, but most places are not. That is why most people live in the suburbs.

What people don't realize about Houston is that there is a lot of Vietnam vets out here.. Like lots of them and they're pissed and moody and like a ticking time bomb they will explode.

Yep, they ventured over and found a job in a refinery. Now they're bringing home close to six figures and haven't looked back.

Yes, everyone in East Houston makes $100,000+. It is the wealthiest part of town and not a s***hole. Good point. Midtown, downtown, Heights, Memorial, West University, etc are envious.

Yep, because that's what I said... But yeah, you're right. The Eastside is a s***hole. Full of blue collar workers and minorities. A real s***hole.

    Y so racist?

Anyway, the availability of jobs doesn't necessarily mean an area will be safe (or be perceived to be safe), so that really had nothing to do with the topic. You can find plenty of good paying jobs in Greenspoint, but that doesn't mean it'd be a great area to take a night time stroll.

Because in Houston, looks can be deceiving.
