To be fair, Smith can impact the game positively when his scoring is off, especially in a situation where he isn't pushed to be the offense at times. Smith gets boneheaded at times, Martin on other hand tends to disappear up his own ass, the former is certainly easier to deal with from a coaching perspective.
just because smith takes jumpshots doesnt make him a competent jumpshooter. he's a pathetic jumpshooter that takes way too many shots.. this is josh smith's shooting from the court: 3-10 feet (287 attempts): 36% 10-16 feet (62 attempts): 19% 16-23 feet (320 attempts): 33% and he took 221 threes and shot .299%. that's not only bad. that's awful. teams want smoove to take the jumper, and he gladly chucks em up. he's a good defender, but he's not a very good offensive player. .501 TS% this year is actually his high in a couple years...and that's still putrid. he had negative ows, and a 97 drtg. he's a high impact defender, and a good passer. but he is NOT a jumpshooter and would definitely make our offense less efficient if he was takin jumpers.
Yeah, I'm not surprised. Today, I watched about 15 minutes of Howard tape immediately followed by 20 minutes of Josh Smith tape and I swear it was like the same player. There were only 3-4 jumpshots on the whole tape, most of it was blocks, dunks, PNRs and a few post moves. I was amazed, that's why I said before that Josh Smith looked like Howard-lite.
well I dunno bout that. howard and smoove are very different. howard doesn't take jumpers, while smoove has over 1/3rd of his offensive attempts as jumpers...dwight is also much more effective drawing fouls and better in the pick and roll game. imo smith is an underrated post player but he doesn't go there as much as he should..and he doesn't know his limitations. Dwight is on another planet both offensively and defensively.
Yeah, I'm with you on that 11Rox4Life3. J.Smith and Howard are different types. Watching highlights is not the same as watching the entire game. That's why now I'm going through whole Laker games from this season to understand Howard's game a bit better. Dwight is on another planet both offensively and defensively. I would agree with you on that. That's why I think Howard is the prime target and Smith is 3rd or 4th.
Im guessing you watched 35 minutes of highlight videos. If you had watched any of the other 5400 minutes of actual game footage between the 2 this year, you would have seen that while howard and smith are both extremely gifted athletes, they are not very similar players.
Agreed. Please refer to my comments in the post above. I'm watching whole Dwight games now and I'll get on to the J.Smith games when I have time. I'm sure your assertions will become apparent to me in due course.
This is why having Morey is so valuable. Any other fan coach or GM looks at those numbers and say Josh Smith is a horrid SHooter. Morey looks at those numbers and disects them even more. He sees as bad as those numbers are when Josh is the playmaker and pulls up to shoot those numbers are even worse. But the flip side is when the ball is distributed to him in a catch and shoot situation he is much better. In fact he shoots 38% from the right side behind the arc. The thing you got to love about Josh Smith is he can run the court and finish like Griffin. He can rebound as good and block shots better. He has some elite PF skills but his shot selection sucks. If Josh Smith improves his shot selection I think he could be a stretch 4. Fix that one thing and plus Take the ball out his hand so he doesn't have the responsibility of playmaking and he's an all star. There's no way for me to know if he can do that. But Morey could probably determine if that is possible. Morey gets the staff to teach these players what works best for them and what doesn't. ANd to avoid what doesn't. It's why players like Delfino and Garcia and Harden improve here and why they regress when they leave. So I don't know if Josh Smith is the right choice for this team or worth what he's asking for. But I trust Morey to make that decision. And if he picks Smith I think there's a good chance he will improve here. Same goes for howard but to a lesser degree because so much of how he dominates is predicated on his athleticism.

Thanks Old Man Rock, I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this. The paragraph you wrote above really hit the nail on the head for me. Morey, with his advanced stats, can see how the team performs best. I suspected that he shares these results with the players (whilst not interfering with McHale's coaching) and the players know how to play better because of it. This is a big reason why players at the Rockets outperform expectations. I too, trust Morey to make the right choices regarding Dwight or Smith or any other player acquisitions. I watched the Hinke presser and he indicated an organizational culture of meticulous due diligence when it comes to make these kind of personnel decisions.
This. I don't know why people consider him to be a jump shooter. Just because he shoots them doesn't make him a shooter.
Oops. Looks like we were typing our messages at the same time. I think you will see that, especially on the offensive end, smith spends far more time 15-25 feet from the basket than howard does. Also smith block alot of shots but howard blocks alot of shots AND effects a large number of shots on oppositions penetration.
Dwight is a top ten player if he's healthy. If we're given an opportunity to get him that doesn't gut the team, I say take it.
Considering the current crop of centers around the league, that's not saying much... Really the only competition is Marc Gasol or Brook Lopez and maybe some other guys if you're feeling generous. But still, Dwight is a special player. I hope we do land him, but I'm not too optimistic about our chances.
So basically if you are just tuning in we just confirmed from multiple reputable members that Cybrex is indeed legit. I already knew this, but feel its all but confirmed at this point. So there is some reason to be excited.
