I'm not debating whether women should be allowed to have sex, get pregnant, get their tubes tied, use contraception, etc. So I'm not actually debating the use of their reproductive organs at all.
All sides of the debate agree that a women should have control of her organs unless said actions would violate the rights of another. So the question isn't whether the women should have control (all share the same stance on this). The question is whether an abortion is violating the rights of the fetus. the whole 'her body, her choice' argument is just a massive dodge of the real topic.
Whether she has a choice or not depends on whether the rights of the fetus are being violated. All sides of the debate agree on this. So arguing ' her body, her choice' just ignores the discussion which is 'Does an abortion violate the rights of the baby/fetus?'.
Sure she does. Don't create one. The "her body her choice" argument is just as dumb as "God says it's wrong." For the argument to matter the other side has to hold to your same belief. If I believe it is a life, I would no sooner think a woman has a choice to kill it than I would think she could kill her neighbor. If I don't believe in God, I would no sooner care whether he thinks it is a life than I would if Michael Jackson did.
To me rights to a fetus is a slippery slope. You can't give rights to something that has not passed through a vagina canal and seen daylight. You don't know if that fetus makes it full term or not until it happens. Just my 2 cents. It's like suing a man for a million dollars because he hit my car which stopped me from getting to class on time thus making me miss an exam and dropping my GPA. Might as well remove the birthday as well.
I support them up to age 18. Alot of folks are still parasites beyond that age, too, and the state is allowed to conditionally abort those people.
???? You don't think someone should be able to sue for the opportunities they lose because of you? If I'm a professional piano player and you cost me the use of my hands, should I not be able to sue for the income I wont earn?
Lets put aside the question of whether a fetus is alive for a second... The Republican position on this is to ban abortions (and say things as justtxyank said) like "women can choose not to be pregnant." Yet at the same time, the same Republican party guts all funding for sex education and then wonders why teen pregnancy rates are so high in the South. Texas is near the top in teen pregnancy rates and rather than pursuing legislation that would significantly decrease the number of unplanned pregnanices (and by extension reduce the number of abortions), they pursue silly things like mandatory transvaginal sonograms and other laughable regulations (at state expense) that do nothing but attack women. Fix your priorities, and then we can have a conversation about the morality of abortion. But until, Republicans decide to revisit sex education and other proven ways to reduce unplanned pregnancies, you're on far lower moral ground than anyone on the other side of the issue
I already agreed there is hypocrisy or simple mindedness on the right side of the abortion debate, but don't lie and say that if Republicans got on board with sex ed that the other side would consider banning abortions. If you think a fetus is a life but you are OK with abortion as a "in your face" to Republicans for not supporting sex ed than you are a sick, sick man.
Which makes your position much easier to swallow. But what bothers me is that many of the same people who want to criminalize abortion (with the goal of "decreasing" abortions) then turn around and gut funding for sex education and contraception. Hell take the morning after pill in this country. It costs over $50 a pill here. It costs less than a dollar per pill in Asia. How does that make any sense?
People kill each other over drugs more than anything else. If I am against murder AND against legalizing drugs, is that a hypocritical position? Obviously not. Your frustration with the position of the right is obvious. You don't think it is a life. That's your right to believe and it is currently supported by the law. It is not, however, hypocritical to think abortion is murder AND that you shouldn't teach kids extensively about sex.
That's a very extreme case. You could say the same about a fetus. He could have cured cancer, could have been a star athlete, blah blah blah. Basiclly it's predicting the future which no one can do. It's like that stupid movie Minority report.
Who knows what a fetus would or would not have done during their life. That's irrelevant to the fact that it was taken from them.
The one certainty is that the fetus is unwanted. That is good enough for me to not want it brought into this world.
