Good post. It's clear you can't take a formula from one organization and reproduce the results with another. Billy Beane and Daryl Morey do a lot more than crunch numbers in a formula their proteges take with them to other organizations.

Is Gersson Rosas going to clean up Morey's #2 from now on?

Ya I don't imagine that idiot in Orlando will be around too much longer. He let Dwightgate turn into a battle of pride and made his team suffer as a result. I'm sure he's selling the company line to his owner: be like the Thunder, suck bad for three years and collect four top 5 picks in the process. We'll see if he has Presti's ability to hit, and if there are evens gonna be guys as good as Durant Westbrook and Harden where he's gonna pick. I highly doubt it.

Thanks for the post. I watched the complete press conference.

As a guy that's into finance and analytics myself, I can really appreciate why the owners chose a meticulous process guy like Sam.

It also gave insight into how Houston runs its FO.

Key takeaway for me was that GMs should be prepared to take a risk when the upside is a lot greater than the downside (when talking about Royce White and Jeremy Lin).

Calculated risk and player development is the name of the game when rebuilding to put yourself in a situation to make a play for that superstar - the Hinke way.

    Sad to lose him.

All the best to Sam, sound like a solid guy that will lead the 76s well for many years to come.

Morey has said himself that what differentiate the teams isn't skill level, but data. Basically every team has the brains to analyze the game at the highest level. The Rockets edge comes from data collection, which Les allowed through willingness to pay lots of people lots of money to collect stats. Not just regular stats, but from one story I've read, the Rockets scouts also collect more stuff than other stuffs.

Knowledge is what allows one team to make better decisions than another. For example, even if everyone knows that rebounding is a skill that translate to the pros, you still have to scout the college players to see who's actually rebounding well against legit competition, rebounding within the realm of the team system, etc. rather than depending on raw stats.

I say neither. Good for the Rockets of course, but its just a sign of how difficult it is to get a head coaching job in the NBA.

When a coach like George Karl, Lionel Hollins, Stan Van Gundy, and a talked about talented up and comer like Brian Shaw have yet to get a coaching gig, you know that its tough sledding out there to get a head coaching gig.
