I think he bit off more than he could chew with that second one. I agree the success of Pitch Black wasn't so much the Riddick character but the simplicity and artistic direction. The best and only real knockout moments of the sequel were the bounty hunter scenes in the beginning and on the prison planet. The Necromonger-saving the world stuff just didn't pan out all that well imo. Still pretty good movie, but mostly cheesy in a cringe-inducing way. I am worried this one will be too similar to the storyline of the first though, but that may not be a bad thing.

Bounty hunters want to kill Riddick and then end up needing his help against a greater evil... so cliche. But it looks fun. Popcorn movie.
QFT ...although, I was hoping the Necromongers would've made an appearance or play a decent sized role in this. Oh well...love that character and universe. Will watch at theaters and will re-watch countless times on cable.
Im actually glad they ditched that storyline. It's best in it's simplicity; just a man trying to survive in the universe. Not someone trying to save it. This looks like it's gonna be a lot of fun.
Meh, look so damn disappointing. Way to give away the whole movie. Look exactly like the first movie but with a bigger budget. Looks like you won't be giving a **** when each characters are being off one by one and Riddick character doesn't seems to be in any real danger. Should at least follow the first Predator formula.
After thinking about this trailer and discussing it with a co-worker...who is the guy shooting the Necromonger-like weapon around the 1:10-1:15 mark? Doesn't look exactly like a Necro and doesn't look like a bounty hunter. I think they might've gone back to Pitchblack formula, but I think there might be a few unreleased surprises. Can't wait for this. Looks like fun.
