Jolie had very advanced reconstructive surgery that allows the woman to keep her nipples and just have the tissue underneath replaced with an implant. Most women lose their nipples and all breast tissue -- it leaves a huge scar across their chest.
WTF? So some "actress" has to have mastectomy because a doctor told her about the risk. She decides to have it... so... all you dudes are cheering and calling her "courageous"?!?!? WTF? Am I reading this right? All of a sudden it's a "triumph" for a person to actually listen to her doctor and do as she's told? Who the H cares if she is who she is? LOL! Man, y'all are (as the youngsters nowadays say) "tripping"...
So is a preventive mastectomy covered by insurance? If not, sort of hard for most people to "take action".
Exactly. She's got MEALEONS. She can do all this and people call her "courageous." Meh, bring other women to do the same at a low cost or pay for some of it... and I'll let everyone know about it and praise her.
They were saying on Good Morning America that she went from 87% chance of getting Breast cancer (which killed her mother) to 5% with this procedure. I would say it was both a courageous move considering her claim to fame and the severity of such a procedure, as well as a no brainer with percentages like that at play and considering the mealeons, not to mention the right thing to do considering she's a parent (and again, considering she can afford it all). I don't know about heaping praise, except for the fact that she has made something very personal for her into something very public, and the attention to it because of her image/status will be good. I certainly can't imagine faulting her for any of it or implying she isn't courageous just because she has money. What should she do, go "lowbudget" to make a point? In fact, having all that money is probably one of the hard parts of coming forward and doing some good by making it public, because you know that some people will harp on that.... "Yeah, well...." Overall, it's sad what this disease does to people. One of, what many consider to be, the most beautiful women in the world has just removed a defining characteristic of her beauty because she -might- get it. (ok, sounded like probably would, but ...). I'm sure there are more poignant examples of such courage, but I'm not knocking this one.
I'm not calling her courageous but I am calling her smart for doing so. As a heterosexual male who has umm enjoyed Jolie's two greatest assets I am in mourning for the loss of them. Science can do wonderful things but this is trying to recreate a natural wonder.
Can you dip****s who haven't ignored trolly-d not quote him for the rest of us? CrazyDave did it the right way. Learn from him.
rocketsjudoka, shouldn't EVERYONE be smart? Why should we celebrate that she all of a sudden decides to "grow a pair" when the doctor says "Dude... you need to do this."? EDIT: You mean speaking my mind about things I see, even if it means some people will not like it? Are you saying no one should disagree with anything? Hey, thanks for following me around. You just hate it when someone doesn't agree with you... don't you? You like people to just follow dumb stuff blindly, don't you?
I applaud her for being transparent regarding her double mastectomy. Hopefully her willingness to share her story will further help in bringing a cure for breast cancer. I agree with some of the posters who don't think she did something extraordinary, she did what the majority of women would do, giving the opportunity and resources to get the procedure done. She used good judgment and plain old common sense! ......... ......... .........
You're being an idiot and arguing for the sake of arguing, Swoly ANY woman is courageous for taking the massive *preventative* step that involves completely removing parts of their body that have had sexual identification associated with them for their entire lives. Yes, she has some added pluses and minuses because of fame/public eye (downside) and a ton of money to look good afterwards (plus). Regardless, she's doing something that anyone should be praised for. She happens to be in the public eye and is therefore praised publicly. Guess what? JJ Watt volunteers at a children's hospital and gets a ton of attention for it. So do I, but I don't. But I'm not b****ing, and I don't think his attention is undeserved. Both Jolie and Watt also serve and additional purpose. Public figures doing something good/difficult in the public eye and getting publicity for it = setting a good example. If she affected even 1 woman (and I have to believe she affected hundreds, if not thousands) and helped her go from "I'm not sure if I can make such a drastic decision" to "Ok, I'm going to do it", then she has done something great. Open your mind; think from other points of view instead of antagonizing people who are viewing this as a positive
Swoly-D is the new DaDakota. DaDakota himself has actually been pretty good lately. Swoly-D must've decided to take it upon himself to fill that void.
The difference between JJ Watt and Jolie that you bring up, kaleidosky, is that a DOCTOR actually was the one who told Jolie to do this... FOR HER HEALTH. Everyone should do what their doctor says to do. No one told JJ Watt to do what he's doing and he doesn't do it for personal gain. Again, let me see Jolie actually take some poor people who are diagnosed, like her, with being high risk for cancer, and if she pays for them, then yes, she's much better. With this, she's just writing an attention-whoring article saying: "Look at me, everyone, I did something healthy but I saved my nipples because I have money!!!!" Meh. All y'all are falling for this "woe is me" crap from a huge celebrity. Good try. Bad analogy. I'm running to make them smaller.
Just blocked SwoLy. First person I've ever blocked. I would have thought it was Ronny or some other schmuck but somehow SwoLy outschmucks them all.
Why would you do that? Go volunteer at a shelter or donate money to your favorite charity. Oh, it hurts so much! I cry! Awesome how you have to let the entire world know this. What other news do you have? Do tell!
Good job taking my analogy and picking one part of it. You forgot the whole role model piece, which is the important part. It's DIFFICULT for women to do what she did. It might be "smart". But you're asking them to undergo surgery for something they don't have! And might never have! And remove parts of their body that have been a piece of their identify since they were growing up! If you seriously think it's super easy to say "yeah, things MIGHT happen to me, let's just undergo multiple MAJOR surgeries", then you don't know surgery and/or lack the ability to put yourself in someone else's (or another gender's) shoes. Cut your balls off and put little bouncy rubber balls in there because you might get testicular cancer 20 years from now. Is that an easy decision? And hell, even if it is, can't you understand that for a percentage of the population, it might not be? And having someone in the public eye do it and talk about it helps? Hell, we're having this discussion because of her. Maybe some people are getting educated.
