Yeah I know Villar is the better prospect, younger and better numbers, but didn't know if all hope was lost.

I think Mier will play in the majors. He is solid defensively, and SS don't have to hit much.

Look at Marwin Gonzalez's stats in the minors.

But unlikely he is ever more than a fringe player.

    Sunday's Top Story

    [IMG] Hitter. In pitchers' hell.

    Recap

Salt Lake 9, Oklahoma City 3

The snowball in the following GIF was Salt Lake, and the unfortunate fellow that was flattened by it was the Redhawks in the 8th and the 9th.

Jarred Cosart didn't outdo Kyle Hallock and Luis Cruz, but he had another excellent outing nonetheless. In 6 innings, he allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. Typical outing for him: lots and lots of weak contact (12 groundouts, 2 flyouts), with a few bouts of control issues (92 pitches, 52 strikes). Jason Stoffel was all over the place in the 7th (22 pitches, 10 strikes), but he only walked 1 and struck out 2.

And then... it all went FUBAR, as the Bees went on an 8-0 run to close it out. Kevin Chapman struggled in the 8th but managed to get 2 outs. However, he left with the bases loaded, and when Rhiner Cruz came in... that's when things just disintegrated. The bases were emptied before Cruz got the final out. And just like that, the Redhawks' 3-1 lead turned into a 4-3 deficit. The Bees then unloaded for 5 on Cruz in the 9th, and there's your final score.

Game 3 of the series pits Brad Peacock against Matt Shoemaker. First pitch is at 7:05.

    Frisco 5, Corpus Christi 2

R.J. Alaniz and Matt Heidenreich continue to struggle as the Hooks had to settle for a split in the series, though Heidenreich had a decent outing as the second starter. Alaniz went 5 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (solo and 3-run homers), walked 1, and struck out 1. Heidenreich allowed 1 run on 1 hit (not a homer) in 2 1/3. Kenny Long worked around 2 hits to get the final 2 outs of the 8th, and Andrew Robinson allowed a hit in the 9th.

Jio Mier went 2-4 and his 2-run homer (4) in the 5th constituted the only Hooks runs. Domingo Santana entered today hitting .256; he had the highest average in today's Hooks lineup. After an 0-3 day with a walk and a whiff, his .247 average is still the highest among the 9 Hooks starters today.

George Springer got the day off, as he had played in every game up to this point.

The Hooks will be welcoming San Antonio to town for 4 starting tomorrow at 7:05. Carlos Quevedo and Jake Buchanan will be the Hooks pairing; they'll be opposed by Donn Roach.

    Lancaster 2, Stockton 0

Welp... I'm getting closer to seeing it all. A combined no-hitter from Kyle Hallock and Luis Cruz in the most extreme hitters' park in probably all of professional baseball. Hallock tossed 5 perfect innings... well, an error from Delino DeShields in the 4th scuttled the perfect game bid. He struck out 3. Luis Cruz tagged in to finish it off, allowing a walk and fanning 4 in 4 innings. Also, this win was the 300th of Rodney Linares' career.

Offense was just as hard to come by for the Jethawks as well, as they were held to 2 hits today. But... they also had 2 in the column that matters. Andrew Aplin doubled to lead off the 4th and would score on Preston Tucker's sac fly. Brandon Meredith hit a single to lead off the 8th and would go station-by-station until he scored on a sacrifice bunt attempt by DeShields. Nolan Fontana went 0-4 with 2 strikeouts. This is only the 2nd game in which he has failed to reach base at all.

The Jethawks will look for the sweep as they send out Blair Walters, with Aaron West backing him up. The Ports will counter with Deyvi Jimenez. First pitch will be at 11 AM Pacific.

    Peoria 4, Quad Cities 2

As was the case in Corpus, Quad Cities was held to 5 hits, and a 2-run home run was the only source of offense for the River Bandits, who have gone 1-4 over the previous 3 days. Rio Ruiz hit it in the 4th. Jesse Wierzbicki went 2-4.

Mike Hauschild allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, walked 3, and fanned 2 in 5 innings. Colton Cain took the loss, although his last 2 outings have been much better. He allowed 2 runs on 2 hits (none of which were home runs), walked 1, and struck out 2.

The River Bandits will look to earn a split in the series as Jordan Jankowski and Brian Holmes take the mound. Their counterpart for Peoria will be Josh Lucas. First pitch will be at 11 AM.

    Three Stars

    3.

    Jio Mier, SS, Corpus Christi
    2-4, 2-R HR (4)

In a day with almost no standout offensive performances, Mier gets the nod by default.

Odd season. Here's a rundown of some of his peripherals: BABIP .219, Texas League average .294. Line drive rate 7.5%, average 16.9%. Infield flyball rate 10%, average 7.9%. His strikeout rate has to come back to normal (for him: 20%) at some point, right? Walk rate is decent (9.9%), but still below his career averages (13-14%). With the guy ahead of him (Villar) and the guy behind him (Fontana) off to torrid starts, he can't really afford to lose much more ground.

    2.

    Jarred Cosart, P, Oklahoma City
    6 IP, 2 H, ER, 3 BB, 4 K

I eagerly await his Major League debut.

    1.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Kyle Hallock, P, Luis Cruz, P, and Ryan McCurdy, C, Lancaster

    Hallock: W(1-0, 2-0 season), 5 IP, 3 K
    Cruz: Save(2), 4 IP, BB, 4 K
    McCurdy: 0-2, K

Duh. Why is McCurdy here, you ask?

    <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>Noooo-no-nooo-no-noooooooo-Hitter!!!!! Congrats to Cruz, McCurdy, &amp; Hallock for being "Really Good Players"!!! <a href="http://t.co/kasRRH3KoC" title="http://twitter.com/MorganEnsberg/status/333721518775341057/photo/1">twitter.com/MorganEnsberg/…</a></p>&mdash; Morgan Ensberg (@MorganEnsberg) <a href="https://twitter.com/MorganEnsberg/status/333721518775341057">May 12, 2013</a></blockquote>

    Honorable Mentions

Jesse Wierzbicki, 1B, Quad Cities: For being the only other guy in the system with a multi-hit game.

Jason Stoffel, P, Oklahoma City: I'd take OKC's relievers over Houston's relievers. Except for Josh Fields, and Jose Veras on some nights.

Rio Ruiz, 3B, Quad Cities: .257/.372/.429 in his last 10. Definitely an encouraging stretch, and I would not be surprised to see him heat up by the end of the month.

    Goat

Sure, I could put Kevin Chapman here. After all, he gave Cruz everything he needed to blow the game. But, Cruz took it a step further and his outing all but guaranteed an OKC loss.

Why would you be worried about Correa? He is one of the youngest players in his league and has been battling injuries and cold weather, but still has a 767 ops and a 392 obp.

    http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130509&content_id=47044418&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb

A difficult start in frigid weather and a badly bruised hand that was hit by a pitch still couldn't weigh down the pride and optimism swelling within Correa, the No. 1 overall pick by the Houston Astros in last season's First-Year Player Draft.........................

"I've never experienced the cold," Correa said of his early struggles. "I'm trying to work as hard as I can and do the best I can for my team. It's been very challenging, but I know I have to fight through adversity."

Quad Cities manager Omar Lopez said the Astros organization won't be putting any pressure on Correa to produce staggering numbers in his first full season as a pro.

"It's not that he's chasing the ball or he's got a bad approach or that he's overmatched," Lopez said of Correa's numbers. "Sometimes he's too anxious. He's 18 and anxious. He needs to be more under control. I understand. He probably has high expectations and high goals for this season -- we don't.

"We told him, 'You hit this, you hit this, you're fine.' We looked at shortstops in the big leagues, and how was their first season in pro ball, and they were hitting .240, 36 errors, but now they're superstars. It's a process."

According to Lopez, the Astros' No. 2 prospect has a brilliant future.

"Carlos is a really special player," Lopez said. "He works hard and he's very mature for his age. He's very disciplined. He has great passion for the game. Everybody knows about his tools. He's going to be a really good player. Carlos needs to grow up physically more, but the talent is there. I love having him here."

He's 10 months older. Also if we had signed Buxton, I doubt we could have signed Ruiz and McCullers.

    Give Correa more time

I am eager to see Cosart play in the Majors! We went to the same HS and were in the same grade so it's cool to see fellow schoolmates succeed! Hope he makes his start soon, I'll def be attending the home game he throws in.

Quad Cities just demolished Peoria 8-0 in the series finale, and Lancaster's game with Stockton is just underway.

Nothing we didn't assume already but Lunhow was on 610 at around 1 and said he expects Villar, Cosart and Singleton will all make it to the bigs this year, he was asked about springer but deflected it and named these other guys and then said we will see several more guys in 2014.

The River starting to heat up. He went 3-4 today after hitting a homer yesterday.

Weird happenings in the Lancaster game. DDJ has a multi-hit game, but was picked off. What is up with his base stealing (lack thereof) this year? Meanwhile, Carlos Perdomo has 3 errors in a game. That's not something you see very often.

Maybe Vince Coleman should come to Lancaster for a while.... Delino DeShields is 5-12 in steals this season after he got picked off today.

When is an appropriate time to worry about his speed? Could it be he is battling an injury?

    so.....AAA?
